Rumor: Dish Could Buy Clearwire
CEO Says It Might Be Possible
by Karl Bode Friday 23-Sep-2011 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · consumers · wireless · Clearwire Wireless · Clearwire
Clearwire needs money to build out their network and migrate to LTE. Dish has freshly-acquired spectrum and wants to get into the wireless business. Not surprisingly, rumors have been bouncing around Internet investment communities today that Dish is considering buying Clearwire. While that could just be empty investor chatter, Dish CEO Joseph Clayton didn't rule the possibility out in conversations today with the media. “We’ll look at partnerships, acquisitions, all of the above," Clayton said today in an interview in San Francisco. Asked by Bloomberg whether that could include buying or partnering with Clearwire or Sprint, he said: "Could be." Dish had already stated they planned to build their own LTE network.

Re: Dish buying Clearwire

I don't see either Sprint or Clearwire as being viable independant companies. I would venture to guess you're right.

Sprint - 9.52 Billion
Clearwire - 598.81 Million

Re: here we go again

Clearwire's Market cap is really around 2.2 billion currently, not huge, but a bit above your estimate.

Satellites are expensive...

....and also unreliable-as Dish well knows with last weeks fiasco. I'll bet that Dish is looking at/for a wireless IP video streaming solution to the home, cars, etc. LTE easily has the capacity to do this-a la U verse, but using wireless for the last mile.

I mentioned this a few times before on dslreports and got some negative responses. But I am with you on this.

Satellites are cheaper than wires. There is not enough spectrum for terrestrial wireless HD video to the home (or anywhere for that matter). There'd have to be a POP on every block.

Re: Satellites are expensive...

I have read this all to often "I'm dropping satellite TV, because heavy loud cover knocks it".
So Dish could be looking at other ways to deliver the signal to a customers home, where weather isn't an issue. Also consider the satellite internet provides. I understand the Down load speed is fast, but the up load speed can be slow. So by developing different delivery methods, Dish can improve it's offering to it's customers.

Nonsense. Around here we have heavy cloud cover 8-9 months out of the year, and it never affects satellite TV.

Anyone whose SatTV reception is affected by cloud cover has a poorly aimed dish or some other installation problem (wrong cable, cable too long, etc.). They need to get someone who knows what they are doing to do the installation.

Re: Satellites are expensive...

When we lived in GA, and now Ohio, our satellite gets knocked out by dense cloud cover. Usually when there is a sever thunderstorm. Regular clouds don't effect it.

POPs can easily fit on phone poles these days-ask Metro PCS, who does this all the time.
