Rumor: Sunrocket Done?
by Karl Bode Thursday 12-Jul-2007 tags: business · trouble · VoIP
A new user in our Sunrocket forum insists to us that the company's final days are here:

"As of today SunRocket is no longer taking new customers. Final layoffs are expected tomorrow and the ramp down team of 25 has been put in place. All employees affected will not be given severance."

Treat this as wholly unsubstantiated rumor for now. We've confirmed that new orders are currently suspended, but we made it through to outsourced customer support who say the company is simply upgrading their systems and all is well.

We've tried contacting Sunrocket's media relations department, their advertising department and CEO Lisa Hook to no avail. Not getting through to an executive isn't surprising given there aren't many left. We've also called Blue Run Ventures -- Sunrocket's main VC in California -- and left messages for their executives.

update:As of 9:30PM EST, some users report the Sunrocket order system is operational again. We tried to place a new order by phone twice, and after some initial success navigating their automated system, were told both times we'd reached a non-working number.

Friday AM update: Phone ordering still wasn't working for us this morning. Latest unsubstantiated rumor is that a buyer has stepped in (possibly Daniel Borislow, owner of magicjack.com).

Still no answer from anyone at SunRocket to confirm or deny any of this, which obviously means readers need to take all of this information with a very large grain of salt.

Re: Tomorrow we'll see

Sigh.

The better half freaked when I mentioned this thread to her a few minutes ago. I did mention that she could spend a little less time on the phone with her Sister. Oh, If looks could kill. Glad I got a no fee LD company to replace the "How dare you not use our LD penalty fee" from VZ LD. Guess the VOIP market is in for a major shake out.

Bye, Bye, SunRocket. You were great while it lasted.

Re: Tomorrow we'll see

I'll still hold out some hope.
Should they crash and burn, a minor disappointment will be getting 6 months of service for the paid 15 months.
A major disappointment will be if they don't go down gracefully and allow users to port their numbers to a different carrier. I knowingly took a risk porting one of my numbers to them...and sure hope they don't shut down service before allowing us to port them somewhere else too.
Will see.

We shall see

Welp, we shall wait and see. I have been extremely happy with Sunrocket and got a two year deal last November that ran me a total of $188. Free equipment, activation, etc. Guess that if they close up shop, 8 months of service for that price still isn't too bad.

Actually, it was Dslreports.com that made it.

It is interesting to note that a bit further down the you see the BroadbandReports.com listing from July 5th.

Curious...

I guess Sunrocket flipped US the bird!

I did not renew last month (though THEY automatically renewed me). I called them and was told I'd get my entire $206.00 back. I wound up getting $188.00-don't know why they subtracted 18 dollars and I guess I'll never know why now.

This is too bad....I liked Sunrocket. Fortunately, I never ported any numbers to them. I still have Vonage (and have had them since 2002). I was going to renew Sunrocket the next time they had a special (I just moved and was short of cash the past few months). I guess that's not an option any more.

Buh Bye Sunrocket! *flipping YOU the bird*

If true, i'd have to think that someone...

will be stepping in to buy them and keep their 200,000 subscribers phone (and e911) service from being interrupted. The two-year pre-pay pricing model will probably go away though. It's tough to budget and plan spending when a high percentage of your subscribers pay only once every two years.

Re: If true, i'd have to think that someone...

Someone take on their mountain of debt, and a customer base that's owed many months of prepaid service ... I think not. I predict that Sunrocket customers will lose their ability to make calls by Sep 1, sadly.

Companies like Vonage and Sunrocket...

Companies like Voange and Sunrocket are getting killed by the cable companies' offering telephone service. Most of them offer unlimited service too. Not to mention that many people don't even HAVE home telephone service any more-they just use their cell phones at home.

The phone companies are even feeling the pinch, which is why they're all trying to offer TV and Internet.

It's a new paradigm, and the Sunrockets of the world just didn't make it through the probation period...

Why? I'd NEVER go for Comcast's phone- $33/mo for what I pay Vonage $17/mo for as we don't use the home phone all that much. In fact I'm thinking of going cell-only soon.

Unlimited is nice if you have kids or don't want a cell phone, but for those of us with cells with lots of minutes home phones are not as important.

Well with vonage and others dont you have to have a broadband connection? which means 17 plus whatever the ISP charges?

Doesnt that only work with one phone, whereas digital phone all the phone jacks can work. to SOME that IS important

The problem is Sunrocket spent too much acquiring customers.

Not sure if it is over; however, the problem is they and Vonage both spent too much acquiring customers.
Viatalk also does 2-1 sometimes but stopped renewing at 99 for another year during promo and raised it to 150. Plus I am sure spent very little to advertise so the 2-1 was their advertising. Sunrocket does 2-1 and advertises and other large investments. So their costs are way higher.
Sunrocket and Vonage dream of competing against the big boys like cable and telcos. A hard thing to do. Smaller players like Packet8, VoicePulse, Viatalk and others I believe have a niche markets planned. Markets that may last even with the cable and telcos of the world.

Looked like they were taking orders now...

I just went through their website and clicked "Sign Up." I was able to go through all the way to the point where I had to put in my credit card info to pay. This included choosing a few steps including that I wanted to port or have a Sunrocket Number.

Not taking orders?

At 8:30pm Central time, their website is still taking orders..

are they just holding them in the system?? or are they actually taking orders again?

Looks to be based SOLELY and ENTIRELY on the DSLR thread, but I will bet serious virtual money that "Om" gets all the credit when this breaks tomorrow, especially since he weasel-worded it so that it sounds as if the DSLR thread is an "also" confirmation rather than the actual source for "his" story.

In the event they DO pull the plug, if anyone paid the full years fee and only used the service for 6 months, you still got off cheap (as compaired to what you would be paying for a full/feature rich POTS line from AT&T) so why all the depression? On a nother note.. Anyone who can get WOW's phone service, seen a advertisement on tv last night, 20 bucks a month.. That's about a 15 dollar drop from the normal price. Good luck getting your ported number back.

Signup IS Working

Read the posts, SR is NOT on the way down. I hear that the RUMOR started is just that..... I would hold off on further rumor mill speculation.

Signup IS working, so the entire thread is null and void, and only quick jump rumors.

Man I hope you're right. I got my girlfriend into Sunrocket and she kept it with Verizon Fios. If they go down I'm a dead man lol.

By the way, is there any way to transfer the phone number if they go down?

port your numbers, while you still can

its well past time to consider alternative carriers, port your number while it's still possible (if you want it)..

as one of the lower cost full-service voip companies.. it is very likely you will need to move up or down, as sunrocket did not have many competitors in their price range ($17 per month). customers may move DOWN to something like SKYPE, or up to another voip company which is $20+ per month.. as these are the price sweet spots where the company CAN stay in business (unless your knocked out, or forced to fork over millions fighting a patent dispute)

Waiting

I plan to wait until I hear specifically from the company that they are going under before porting anything. Certainly there will be more than one day to get out if need be.

Good Riddance

This is great news. This company was a joke from the very beginning.

I fell for the low-price cost myself. 1 month later - their garbage was being sent back to them.

Again, this is only a rumor. If the OP is a disgruntled ex-employee, what better way to kill the company than to spread rumors of its death so that customers run to a competitor?

Irresponsible

If this turns out not to be true, then this is a very irresponsible posting of this story on the front page. The only source is a new poster and the only data was the inability to test availability. I placed a three minute call to the company and they advised that there was a system upgrade in place.

Granted, there has been instability in the company of late. However, one has to wonder about the vetting and decision making process of placing this on the front page of BBR. If this turns out to be false, then BBR has just lost some of my confidence.

Sunrocket is down for me in GA

Hopefully this is just a coincidence,

I get a dial tone, dial the number, nothing happens for 30-45 seconds, and then I get a fast busy. When I call my SunRocket number from my landline I get a fast busy.

This just started about 10 minutes ago.
