SOPA Protests, Blackouts Still Planned
Wikipedia, Reddit Among Sites Going Dark in Protest
by Karl Bode Tuesday 17-Jan-2012 tags: legal · Fileswapping · business · alternatives · bandwidth · legislation · consumers
Despite SOPA and PIPA running into a bit of a brick wall over the weekend, politicians and entertainment industry lobbyists work overtime to save their controversial legislation. After initially engaging in some fairly major distortions the MPAA has come forward to acknowledge that DNS filtering is officially off the table. Critics contend both laws still have very serious problems when it comes to censorship and erosion of legal rights, and both still put immense pressure on ISPs to become content babysitters.

SOPA and PIPA are just indicators of a much broader problem. All around the world, we're seeing the development of legislation intended to fight online piracy, and regulate the Internet in other ways, that hurt online freedoms.
-Sue Gardner, Executive Director, Wikimedia Foundation
As a result, planned protests by several major websites will continue as scheduled, despite the community-driven victory against DNS blocks. Wikipedia/Wikimedia has issued a statement saying that the site will be taken offline for the entirety of Wednesday, January 18 to protest bills that "would seriously damage the free and open Internet." Unlike SOPA and PIPA, Wikipedia had broad community input in to whether to proceed with the planned blackout:

Over the course of the past 72 hours, over 1800 Wikipedians have joined together to discuss proposed actions that the community might wish to take against SOPA and PIPA. This is by far the largest level of participation in a community discussion ever seen on Wikipedia, which illustrates the level of concern that Wikipedians feel about this proposed legislation. The overwhelming majority of participants support community action to encourage greater public action in response to these two bills.

Wikimedia proceeds to note that SOPA and PIPA are just symptoms of a much larger disease:

The reality is that we don’t think SOPA is going away, and PIPA is still quite active. Moreover, SOPA and PIPA are just indicators of a much broader problem. All around the world, we're seeing the development of legislation intended to fight online piracy, and regulate the Internet in other ways, that hurt online freedoms. Our concern extends beyond SOPA and PIPA: they are just part of the problem. We want the Internet to remain free and open, everywhere, for everyone.

Online community Reddit is also protesting by going offline for twelve hours (8AM to 8PM) on Wednesday.

Good to see someone with visibility taking notice

Shame Wikipedia+etc. didn't show the same attention to the legislation that absolved AT&T from colluding with the NSA to clone/store our internet traffic.

At least they showed up to this fight. That's way better than nothing.

Doubt it. The site already has a decent enough userbase that are aware of SOPA/PIPA. Wouldn't make much sense as those blackouts are to bring awareness to the general public which sites like Wikipedia have plenty of.

Twitter not going to go dark

»news.yahoo.com/twitter-not-join-···000.html

Twitter co-founder Dick Costolo tweeted that it would be “foolish” and “silly” to shutdown a “global business in response to single-issue national politics.” Many took this to mean that Costolo believed any site that goes black (or, more likely, shows an anti-SOPA/PIPA landing page in place of normal content) over a single bill is “foolish” and “silly.”

So, will the Jan. 18 blackout be a success? Who knows. But you can be sure we’ll be checking Twitter all day to find out.

I agree with Twitter.

Facebook will celebrate anti-SOPA day by violating privacy

Facebook has plans of their own for anti-SOPA day - roll out their privacy abusing Open Graph initiative.
»news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-57360···1_3-0-20

The world's largest social network will be holding a press event in San Francisco tomorrow unveiling the first group of Open Graph actions that share user activities from outside the site with its users, All Things Digital is reporting, citing sources.

So, if a user is listening to a song, watching a television show, or reading a news article across the Web, it can be shared on Facebook for friends to see. Those friends can then join in and do the same. At F8, Zuckerberg said that the idea could create "a completely new class of social apps than what was ever possible before."

Facebook said that all the content shared won't show up in a person's news feed. Instead, the data will be found in their Timeline, with the ultimate goal of creating a visual record of what a person has done over the course of several years.

My solution to that is to stop using Facebook.

As for the Twitter twits: Money over ethics. What do you expect of such places? Twitter, Facebook, etc. are "social" only in that a lot of people use them. Of social consciousness, they have little. Witness Facebook's nev er-ending stream of privacy-wrecking antics.

It won't mean anything in the greater scheme of things, but I may take my sites down tomorrow, too.

And SOPA bill marches forward in February, blackout notwithstanding:
»judiciary.house.gov/news/01172012.html

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) today said that he expects the Committee to continue its markup of the Stop Online Piracy Act in February.

Chairman Smith: "To enact legislation that protects consumers, businesses and jobs from foreign thieves who steal America's intellectual property, we will continue to bring together industry representatives and Members to find ways to combat online piracy.

“Due to the Republican and Democratic retreats taking place over the next two weeks, markup of the Stop Online Piracy Act is expected to resume in February.

“I am committed to continuing to work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to send a bipartisan bill to the White House that saves American jobs and protects intellectual property."

The obvious bi-partisan support of these bills just shows how corrupt BOTH parties are. Until the middle of BushJr's second term, I was a life-long republican, but after seeing what had been a conservative party during my earlier years, had become just the flipside of the democrat party, so now I, along with a LOT of other people are independent. I'm to the point where I reluctantly believe the only fix for Washington DC is a 50MT thermonuclear device being detonated over it. The corporations and their lobbyists have taken control of the government and I have NO idea how to fix it, short of blowing it up and starting over..

Oh, so you are NOT against blocking of domains - as long as Google & Yahoo are the ones doing it. And not MPAA or RIAA or an ISP.

The MPAA or RIAA is welcome to block all the domains they like.

What Big Entertainment must not do is bribe MY legislators to direct government agencies to order domains blocked on their behalf.

Were they to do so, they would be engaged in government corruption.
An electorate that allows it deserves the corrupted government they will certainly get.

Actually you just did not understand my wording I guess. I meant on the 18th Google should block all requests. Meaning that someone operating from with in a .gov location or from behind an MPAA or RIAA domain would be unable to access Google or its services.

Not google blocking access to view those sites.

Exactly. I believe this is referred to as refusal of service. For example, if you run a restaurant (or any other kind of business for that matter), you can refuse service to anyone. Not sure how Civil Rights laws would apply here since you cannot refuse service on basis of race, sex, age, ethnicity, religion, etc.

This is a different kind of blocking we are talking about. When you are hosting a web site, the web server(s) and other equipment that it is running off and/or is feeding its content is your property. With that in mind, you are free to block whoever and whatever you want. You are the one doing the talking, and therefore you can technically exercise control over who should and should not be able to hear you. This is similar to employers blocking certain websites from their corporate networks. The work computers and network is their property, and they have full right to decide what can and cannot be done with it.

What Hollywood is trying to accomplish with SOPA/PIPA is to prevent certain "voices" from being "heard", pretty much to an extent that you should not be "hearing" anything that they don't like. IMO, and as many will agree, it's not for them to decide.

boycott would be better

How does shutting down your site and censoring yourself send a message to Congress? You just did SOPA / PIPA's dirty work for them.

A boycott of the music and Hollywood people behind this nonsense would hurt them more. Money's the only thing they care about.

But those thousands or millions don't matter to our elected representatives. I doubt my Congress critters even know what those sites are, but those critters are the ones who will vote.

You have to speak to them in language they understand, or it's all sound and fury and no substance, just like the Bard said.

And sadly, I'm willing to bet over half the massive amounts of people whose awareness you want to raise will go right out and spend money on a movie or a tune and never see the irony in it.

It's what Time Warner has wanted all along.

To "safeguard it's customers", TW would like to allow - only content it owns - to travel freely across it's networks. Everything else would be subject to an inspection fee.
