Samsung Announces Galaxy S III 'Developer Edition'
As False Rumors Fly About Unlocked Verizon Bootloader
by Karl Bode Wednesday 18-Jul-2012 tags: wireless · hardware · Verizon · wireless
Though Verizon's Twitter support account briefly tried to blame the locked boot loader on the S III on Samsung, Verizon has since come forward to insist they're the only carrier to lock the device down out of concern for the "customer experience." Hoping to make good with annoyed tinkerers, Samsung is now offering a "developer edition" of the device -- though you'll of course have to pay $600 for the unsubsidized phone. There was some chatter this week that Verizon would offer an update patch that would unlock the bootloader on the S3, thought that appears unsubstantiated and has officially been denied by Verizon. Meanwhile, the hackers Verizon apparently believed they could stop inch ever closer toward finding a way around the locked bootloader.

Re: old news?

Where in the article does Karl mention Sprint at all? The article only references Verizon.

And yes, this is really old news. Karl is slipping.

No I'm just traveling, and this one had been sitting in the queue. But thank you.

This is a fundamental issue. Who owns the hardware, and who controls it?

@ thegeek See Profile just pointing out that other CDMA carriers issue their regular phones unlocked.

Re: F verizon

But Verizon has better coverage and a better network in my area. AT&T's network sucks in my area.

Nothing new

Verizon has a long history of these anti-consumer type of actions. I wear on my hip (supplied by work) an ancient Blackberry 8830 with Verizon service which contains a GPS chip. On the sprint version of this phone the GPS works fine. On mine and every other Verizon supplied one, the chip is locked out and only works for their VZNavigator app and the crappy built-in BBmaps.

From what I can tell, if you want Android and aren't getting a Nexus device you are shooting yourself in the foot. Even then it looks like some versions of the Galaxy Nexus are fuxored with by the carrier.

In the end I can see when the carrier is subsidising a phone they will want to prevent it from going to a competitor's service. Paying full price for a totally unlocked phone is actually a better deal anyway

Re: Nothing new

At least on the Galaxy Nexus, which I have, you can go into Fastboot Mode, unlock the bootloader, flash your own recovery, and load your own third-party kernel and ROM. All of which I've already done with ease on my Nexus phone.

The Hackers will save you

Give them some time. They'll jailbreak the locked bootloader.

Unfortunately, maybe not. Remember the Motorola phones after the Droid OG still aren't unlocked.

Should it really come to this? Why does Samsung need to provide a "different" phone for their customers. How would a customer know whether or not he/she is getting a device that has an unlockable bootloader?
