Samsung Cooking Up Nexus Two Despite Google saying there wouldn't be one Friday Oct 29 2010 09:10 EDT While Google's Nexus One phone was supposed to rattle the wireless status quo by offering users unsubsidized phones via a Google store, the promised revolution never arrived. That was due to a number of factors, including the fact that the phone was initially only available via T-Mobile. However, the Nexus One also came with fairly awful 3G connectivity bugs and annoying fees -- but not with phone support (Google fixed the latter two eventually). Despite not revolutionizing phone sales and Google ultimately closing their online store, Google CEO Eric Schmidt stated the Nexus One was still a success, given it helped establish a beachhead for the Android brand. Still, back in July Google said there wouldn't be a Nexus Two. That changed briefly yesterday with rumors that Samsung was preparing to launch the Nexus Two. So far the phone looks more like a refresh of the Galaxy line of phones, and while it will sport the Google brand, it appears this incarnation will be leaving talk of revolution on the shelf. |

Re: establish a beachhead for the Android brand?!?I'm not sure Karl is correctly using what Schmidt said. He was actually speaking about the phone hardware, with Google wanting the phones to become far more powerful. In that respect, the N1 absolutely succeeded.

The Nexus set the baseline for what true Android is. It gives consumers a standardized alternative from which to compare other Android devices, and it gave manufacturers a reference for what Android can do when given the right hardware.

Re: establish a beachhead for the Android brand?!?Not to mention a vanilla experience rather than Verizon or MOTO labeling all over the place (I'm looking at you MOTOBLUR).

Stock Android?I wonder if Samsung will be skinning the OS like with all their Galaxy phones or if they'll just leave it very stock.
I would prefer the latter.

Re: Stock Android? If it wasn't for GPS that reportedly just doesn't work, and the continual delay in the 2.2 Froyo upgrade, a Samsung Nexus 2 would be worth considering. If their flagship phone right now has these problems, I'm leery of anything the offer.

I don't think Google would put their name on it unless it was COMPLETELY stock.

If it is a Nexus Two, I'd be sure it will be plain Vanilla Android (No skinning).
Matter of fact, that is what I liked about the Nexus One. An android experience that isn't ruined by skins like Blur or Wiz. Sense may be an exception, but the Sense dialer sucked.

Nexus Two vs. a Verizon iPhone? It's going to have a tough time selling, IMO, if Verizon gets the iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I like the Android OS, but I like my iPhone 4 a lot more. However, I'm sure they will have fixed any problems they had with the N1.
