Samsung Unveils 'Galaxy Tab' Tablet
Will have embedded phone capabilities, likely sold through Verizon
by Karl Bode Thursday 02-Sep-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Samsung today unveiled their response to the Apple iPad: the Galaxy Tab. Unlike the iPad, the Android-powered device has two cameras, is a bit smaller (7.5 by 4.7 by .5 inches) and lighter (13.4 ounces), and actually operates as a phone. As such, the device will be offered through a phone partner, rumored to be Verizon. It's not clear yet if it's exclusive, given specs indicate it supports HSDPA and HSUPA (which could mean AT&T/T-Mobile, or it could simply mean European carrier support). Much like the recent netbook craze, you can expect this to be the opening salvo in a wave of subsidized tablets tied to carriers aimed at locking users into long-term contracts. Motorola and HTC are also rumored to be developing Android tablets for use on Verizon's network.

I'm sure you'll be able to buy one for full cost with no contract and then just use wifi.

Re: i just want a wifi

i'm sure they'll just make a wifi only version, and get that for cheaper $$...

everyone wins.. do you need another 3g/4g unit? when you have an iphone 4 or DRIOD with hotspot feature? the answer is No, you don't.

I'd be sold if...

there was a more powerful processor and the screen was larger. More storage wouldn't hurt either. I don't see anywhere how much RAM there is. Am I blind or is it not listed on the site?

I can already see in my head self-important jackasses walking around using it as a phone and talking way to loud so as to attract attention.

Re: I'd be sold if...

Not quite sure what your complaints are about the processor. It's the most powerful one out right now for these types of devices.

* 7-inch TFT-LCD, WSVGA (1024 x 600)
* 1 GHz Hummingbird CPU (ARM Cortex-A8)
* Android 2.2 with TouchWiz UI
* 3 MP rear-facing camera with auto-focus and LED flash, 1.3 MP front-facing camera
* 16 or 32 GB of internal storage, 512 MB RAM
* Size: 190.09 x 120.45 x 11.98, 380g
* Battery: 4,000 mAh (7 hour movie playback)
* 30 pin connector for charging and accessories (like a dock with HDMI)
* Gyroscope sensor, geo-magnetic sensor, accelerometer, light sensor, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0

Re: I'd be sold if...

People complain to complain.

Personally, I think that people haven't, after so many years, figured out that these "tabs" or "net" things (be it a book, tab, what ever) are not laptops nor have they been designed to replace a laptop or notebook computer.

16 and 32gb is certainly plenty of room for storage for the "use on the go" kinda computing.

I dunno.. maybe some of us realize that they're not "computers" per say.. they're the new version of a netbook which was designed to connect to the internet, browse the web, email, and chat. Only, now they also play music and a few other things... but, they're not computers as people are used to them. Therefore, they don't need to be fully stocked up like one.

Re: I'd be sold if...

Those storage levels can be *way* to low if you use the tablet for multimedia purposes.

I bought an iPad for my 3yr old daughter because she sat in the back seat of the car for 12 hours two days in a row, each direction of a trip. With 64GB of storage, the iPad held plenty of ripped DVDs and kids books, games etc. 32GB would have been too little.

BTW, it was amazing - she was happy the entire trip! Plus I used the 3G connectivity to keep up with e-mail on the road.

Yeah, except this new tablet accepts microSD cards, which right now go up to 32GB, but will only get larger.

So you can make this 64GB just like the biggest iPad. Yet you can make it even larger as newer microSD cards come.

Actually if it's for playing media you could have multiple SD cards now for essentially an unlimited capacity.

Looking at the Samsung site for this it says that the tablet comes with either 16 or 32GB of memory, plus you can add more memory via the SD slot. So adding a 32GB SD card will give you 64GB of storage.

Re: I'd be sold if...

Ahhh, the iPad's stupid limitations have blocked me from thinking outside the Apple box of no SD, no USB, etc. Good call!

I actually wouldn't ever buy one of these. Between my DROID, work Blackberry, and work laptop, I have enough gadgets to haul around all day.

Amen! lol

I will admit that I did get an iPad, however, I develop apps for them and the simulators just are not the same as having an actual device in hand. I don't plan on making apps for anything droid based so I won't be buying one.

I personally see no difference between an iPad and an iPod Touch except the screen size.

I will say, though, even after stating what I did, I can see for some people that pads (ala touch screens) would fill a good role for them as a laptop is too much, and a cell phone isn't enough.

my two cents.

Actually 1ghz is pretty powerful compared to what's out there RIGHT NOW... soon there will be DUAL & MULTI-CORE versions to be sure... Texas Instruments totally got out of the cablemodem chipset business to dedicate r&d to the mobile internet tablet procesor division.

Compare this to an Archos 5, 7 and 8th generation internet media tablets.. 600-800mhz processors and somewhat walled garden of features-- which are usually jailbroken by the fan community.

Biggest key here is price.. I'd like to see the 16gb version out at $149 by this holiday season. 32gb $199-$220... These prices will be breakthroughs..

More powerful processor?
It's the fastest processor i've seen on any tablet/smart phone.

sweet

Yeap, I'll likely only need wifi for a while. I still don't have/need a data plan, but will likely get one someday...and all the more likely to if I have a device which would plainly be 'better' were data part of my plan.

But I don't WANT to be tied to a carrier. I hate that. Unfortunately the Google Nexus experiment showed that likely to not be a future trend...so I hope it's not an exclusive deal, at least.

I am excited to see what other options are coming. This device looks very cool. What else is going to be out in time for my Big Christmas present?!

I would want the wifi only as I would use my iPhone as a wifi hotspot. I could not stomach paying another company money for a data plan.

exclusivity

It's NOT exclusive.

The model of distribution will be similar to the Galaxy line of smartphones.

It is.

Ipad is also a bigger version of the ipod touch.

Doesn't make sense to re-design something that already works.

Pricing

Netbooks require a data feature and not the 30$ smartphone one. Since this has a phone in it, think they would treat it as a smartphone or a netbook for monthly pricing.

a 7" display?

It only has a 7 inch display. The iPAD has a 9.7 inch display. How would this even compete with the iPAD. The screen is too small.

The device competes in the Internet Media Tablet category of device. A 5-7" device is much easier to hold with ONE HAND which makes them less portable. When the devices are bigger you'll need an extra hand. (Yes, chuckle as your minds enter the gutter brielfly).

Apple products aren't and shouldn't be the standard against which everything tech should be based upon. If that were the case, these IMT's wouldn't even have Linux & Android as embedded o/s and platform. Apple's big gateway to success is following tech trends from the basic mp3 player all the way to this & the iphone and captializing on them with guerilla marketing tactics to make them seem like the best things since sliced bread.

One day people will compare Apple's marketing to those gadgets millions buy from infomercials. Except Apple does it on the cheap with Wall St. backed clout. This mantra is you don't have to be the *BEST* in your category, you just have to have enough people BELIEVE you are, even if that's far from reality so you part with your cash.
