What does being the capital have to do with anything ?? it doesn't; chances are AT&T is going by size of the cities; Cleveland is easily the largest city in Ohio, and is rapidly expanding towards the Akron area; it only makes sense (from a profit standpoint) to deploy here first.
It'll be interesting to see how well this system turns out...too bad it probably won't be deployed in rural areas....of course, that doesn't really matter as I'm in Embarq territory.

but, see, most often, when someone mentions "the city of XXXXX has Y many people" they usually mean the city and the suburbs.
I just wonder how much longer it'll be before Akron and Cleveland completely collide to form a huge megalopolis...

The franchise law is passed by the house and senate and they represent the rest of the state too, not just Columbus.

IPTV can and is provided by anyone why should only the companies that takes all the risk by providing the network have to pay?

MarkyDPremium join:2002-08-20 Oklahoma City, OK 1 edit | this is just silly Every time I read about U-VERSE, I shudder. It's just such a half-asked project...
-6/1 is the top speed tier. Customers are getting 25mb/sec in total bandwidth for TV and internet. Why can't they make that dynamic...allowing unused bandwidth when the TVs are off to go to the internet speed? That would make it a little better, but not the best. Not even close. Cox is already offering at least 2x that speed here in Oklahoma City. -Only 1 HD stream. Period, plain and simple...there is NO excuse for this. The other guys have been offering multiple HD streams for years now. Rolling out a product that can't even stream more than 1 HD channel at a time is absurd. -Inferior HD picture quality. The compression they are using to squeeze all this into 25mbps of bandwidth is really, really poor.
I could go on. No wonder the take rate for the UVERSE areas is so low! AT&T can't even get it right on their FTTP customers, much less FTTN.

We'll see. I wonder what part of Sacramento will get it first.
Competition is good. Either U-verse will succeed or not, it'll still be a competition as far as Comcast is concerned. They better improve their service or lower (roll eyes) the price.
It's a win-win situation for consumers/customers. --

Either AT&T has done a most excellent job at hiding the VRADS (unlikely), or they are only rolling it to a VERY Select area here in NW OKC. that's the only place (besides Edmond, [rich people]) that I'm seeing any VRADs. OKC's a big place...I wonder how many homes will have it available on that launch date? -- -Put this in your profile if you know someone who is fighting, has survived, or died from ninja attacks.

You guys are not giving AT&T a chance, but most of you guys just like fast Internet Connection. U-Verse is targeting the Average Person, not the Techies. I think for the Average Person this might work, we need to hear from some people that have it, and then give it some time. I do think like some of you, that eventually they will have to go FTTH, but this might work for now.

ominae join:2003-05-11 Columbus, OH | What I don't get... ...is how AT&T will be offering U-verse (one HD stream and a 6/1 internet offering) as an upgrade? I live in Columbus where they already offer 6/768 DSL (see this link: »swot.sbc.com/swot/dslMassMarketC···YNAMICIP). I can't see how adding one HD stream is that much of an enticement to ditch my RR. At best they are being cautious, at worst it's a useless investment in technology that will need to be replaced, and replaced soon, to remain competitive. This is a complete waste.

| boycott the service please I hope AT&T sees a massive scale boycott of xdsl services so that they get the message their technology rollout was not exactly what the consumer wanted. When a company does broadband on the cheap they need taught a lesson in economic sabotage.. namely extremely low subscription potential customers. Then MAYBE, just maybe AT&T will start giving up the REAL deployments. with FTTP | |

Why boycott? If people actually want it, shouldn't they get it?
The problem, as always, on forums like these is we all start to believe that we are the average consumer. We're not even close, of course. Plus, as others have pointed out, it's competition. Even if you don't like it, if it makes the alternative services better and/or cheaper, you win.
I believe that AT&T will eventually upgrade to FTTP. I believe that they started out with FTTN for cost purposes so they could afford to upgrade as many areas as possible. As subscriptions start rolling in, they can use that to finance the FTTP upgrades. (Their rollout schedule is far more aggressive than FIOS, which has creeped along rather slowly and cost a lot more.)
Do I want U-Verse as it stands today? Hell no. I can get 10/10 (shared) service from an RF provider and I currently get 4 HD streams from DirecTV simultaneously. U-Verse would be a downgrade in every sense.
But I think I understand their strategy, and perhaps U-Verse or some competitive IPTV service will be my choice in a couple of years.
