Schools Think Macs Are Inappropiate Technology

Community Unit School District 300 in Illinois is working to remove Mac computers from classrooms in favor of more "appropriate technology." The "appropriate technology," according to The Courier News, includes Microsoft's Windows operating system.

The decision, however, may be at odds with voter's wishes. A referendum passed in March to add new Macs in schools. But eventually the new computers will be phased out. Mr. Willard commented "We just bought Macs; we can't throw them out. We can't just change everything over tomorrow. It will probably be a three- to five-year process."

This is really depressing to me considering school was the biggest influence of Mac for me.

How dumb can you get?

Modern dual-booting Macs are not "appropriate technology"? What morons.

You're all missing the point...

This is not about what is best for the kids or even the voters...

...it's about what makes the most money for the powers that be. Some asshole is probably getting a kickback for not only selling the Macs that won't be used to buying the new Windblows machines and the bundled flock of IT support staff that will have to be hired to make sure the nasty viruses won't overtake the school.

There oughtta be a law against stupidity in our schools...and I'm not talking about the students.

It's all about Ignorance

I am the support person in a K-8 school district and am experiencing a similar attempt to get rid of the Macs.

All of the arguments the administration is using are outdated, flawed, and just plain wrong. The sad thing is that those who will spout off all day about what is "bad" about the Mac have never used or supported them.

Dollars and Cents are the cold hard facts in education, but even when confronted with reams of documentation proving that Macs have a lower TCO and do a better job, the admins stupidly keep the blinders on.

A sorry mess

It is true that PC does somethings easier than Mac. It is equally true that Mac does somethings easier than PC. It all boils down to the project at hand which in our school system is the PC and Microsoft XP Power Point a PC.

A high school Freshman told me he was able to downloaded a program that let him hack the school server and change the teacher's grade book. He's a smart kid.

I sold my 9-bay, 6-drive PC. Then I bought a Mac, took it out of the box and 5 minutes later I was surfing the net. I never looked back and I never thought I'd never micromanage Windows again. I was wrong. .

Last week my cousin gave me a computer with a new hard drive with a freshly loaded copy of Server 2000. I got nothing but errors for a week. Come to find out some of the open source drivers he downloaded off the net included spyware and some of its friends.

There is an old adage that says: Be careful what you ask for because sometimes you get it. Three to five years from now, Mac won't be the same and neither will the school board members.

Re: A sorry mess

This is why I'm glad we're going to homeschool. My kids will be exposed to both kinds of computers, and we won't have to deal with all of the pathetic school politics. I used to be a para-pro for a school of 3rd through 5th graders, and the principal who was my boss didn't care about the needs of the kids; just what made the day go smoothly.

I could go on, but that would just make this off-topic!

A bad decision

Such a bad choice. I know from first hand experience from high school. We had Windows a first, which sucked a lot, didn't work 50% of the time and were always super slow, and then they switched to Macs, which was the best decision ever.
