Will new gadget site attract a new brand of customer?

The Sci Fi Channel has a gadget blog that ranks in the top 1,000 of tech sites but which they’re hoping can develop into something bigger. The channel has announced that the blog is being re-vamped and will launch on Tuesday as its own site, DVice. The site will include a number of different things but what the channel hopes will gain attention is the addition of a new broadband show of the same name.
“The show, also called DVice, will profile offbeat gadgets in normal situations (say, people on pogo-stick stilts jumping around Central Park) with normal gadgets in offbeat situations (like asking passersby whether one would look hotter with an iPhone or the new Palm).”
Their hope is that the broadband show will attract a new kind of customer which will help the channel expand its technology consumer base.

Link to story about DVice program

Not sure why they aren't putting links to the source of the stories today, but here is this one:

P.S. I tried to login to »www.dvice.com and it prompts for a userid/password. I guess they want to hide it until Tuesday when it debuts.

Looks like a wacky 3's company scheme with help from Lucy.
Tech is only a niche audience, less than 10%. It is growing, but not that much.

I don't think that it's going to be aimed at my age group, because if this is a sample, I don't really give a &!#@.

Scifi Channel Content

If the SciFi Channel wants to keep viewers its managers might try to get a clue and ditch the comic-opera nonsense called ECW wrestling, Ghost Hunters, Flash Gordon and Mind Control. The only series I go out of my way to watch on the SciFi Channel are 'BSG' and 'Eureka', now the some moron decided to cancel 'Dresden Files'.

If SciFi wants to attract imbecile-level intellects (Fox Channel News viewers and ECW fans)it will continue to lose viewers who were attracted to the thought-provoking scifi series, e.g. 'Outer Limits', that made it interesting.

I miss the early days of the SF channel when Harlan Ellison had a talk/news show.

Oh you noticed the ECW crap too. I know some of these grow juice soaked clowns look like space aliens but how about some better programing.

Another failed attempt

I don't have much to add here but vote for the fact that yes, Scifi Channel isn't much of a Scifi Channel. Yeah (sarcasm)Rachel Ray could save the channel.

Gotta agree. The execs at SciFi are COMPLETE morons. They canceled SG1 when all the actors were signed and ready to go for the last season, just like they did to Farscape. They had proven winners in SG1, Farscape and could have easily gotten FireFly if they wanted. Now, the only shows I watch are BSG and SG-A (because it's better than nothing.) This move brings then no closer to being a decent SciFi channel.

I love the Sci-Fi channel. but to be honest I don't think this will grab my attention.
Sounds kinda like a spin off of "Tech-Tv" wannabe.

(Note: BEFORE Tech-TV was bought out and moved to G4 it used to be good. G4 BLOWS!)

Sci-Fi Channel Jumped The Shark Long Ago

Sci-Fi channel sucks.

Every show they produce is a much of models who cant act shooting at rubber aliens. The writing is uniformly AWFUL.

The only shows people actually watch are the ones imported from other networks.

And now this, wtf does this have to do with sci-fi?

SciFi has lost it's way

and gone commercial, losing it's core element in turn for something as nebulous as diversity. Gadgets or no, they NEED to get b2b if they are to survive. The only reason why they are still ticking is they are still suckling off their mother's nipples.

Sorry SciFi, since you cut Farscape, Dresden, and other geeky shows, you have removed your own heart. That channel was pretty much the only reason (outside of the news and NASATV) i'm holding onto my dish.

Now I got second thoughts about my subscription. I can use the monies better elsewhere in improving my life, instead of letting it rot on the dren that scifi has.

NBC turned the SciFi channel to crap

I remember when the SciFi channel first came out I thought they had a winner, a true SciFi channel. Then when NBC took them over the SciFi Channel turned to crap. NBC ruined the SciFi channel by putting on ECW. Like there isn't enough SciFi movies/shows that they have to make ECW the theme of SciFi. Next thing you know NBC will be putting on some cooking show.

If you have any issue with there programming on there site, they will remove your posts. I remember when there was a big issue with ECW being showed, they only showed the positive posts and removed the negative.

Dumb and Dumber

That network hasn't got a clue. Personally I think it's the boys upstairs at NBC that are responsible. And I believe that it's intentional. I love how BSG has been set back till April (If memory servers me right). And how NBC is airing the BSG Razor mini series on the main network.

Every hear the phrase out of site out of mind. And I believe that's what they want. Low viewer numbers and ratings to justify truing the Sci-Fi channel into a G4/Techtv, Spike, USA hybrid. Sprinkling in a mix of shows carried on USA and NBC shown weeks or days after they've aired on their main network.

During "Razor" they said March on the promo. Who knows when it will really be? Maybe the strike will still be on...

instead of flash based broadband crap

How about getting SciFi HD going? I don't feel like staring at the "Loading..." screen for 10 minutes to look at some cheesy product crap that I could read in 5 minutes on CNET.

Scifi....YOU FAIL IT.
