Senate Creates Copyright Czar
Controversial RIAA-backed part of bill dropped

The Senate has passed a piece of legislation called the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act which creates a new position in the government for a copyright czar.

quote:
"The new copyright czar will oversee government anti-piracy crackdowns and, among other things, train other countries about IP enforcement. The legislation also creates an FBI piracy unit and allows for the forfeiture of equipment used in large pirating operations."
The copyright czar is also tasked with creating a nationwide plan to combat piracy.

Although many Digital Rights groups were opposed to the law, the good news is that a highly controversial RIAA-backed portion of the legislation was removed prior to it passing Congress. The portion that was cut out would have allowed the Justice Department to sue copyright infringers on behalf of Hollywood and the music industry, a role currently filled by RIAA and MPAA. It is expected that the House of Representatives will discuss the new legislation over the weekend.

Best gov't corporations can buy

Energy? Nah.

Heathcare? Nah.

Crime? Nah.

Exploding budgets? Nah.

High taxation? Nah.

Corporate corruption? Nah.

Education? Nah.

Illegal immigration? Nah.

Licking the ass of corporate interests in exchange for bribes contributions? Top priority.

Title 17 already has enforceable provisions. We don't need to grow gov't even more creating a gov't police force for corporate interests. Copyright czar. Piracy unit. It's laughable how corrupt gov't is.
