Senator Accuses LightSquared of Bribery
Insists They Promised a Call Center if Deal Approved
by Karl Bode Thursday 02-Feb-2012 tags: legal · business · wireless · Politics · consumers · wireless
Things haven't been looking so hot for LightSquared, which has trying to overcome numerous reports showing that their planned LTE network will significantly interfere with GPS signals. LightSquared's technical problems are bad enough, but their political problems keep getting worse. LightSquared's latest problems come courtesy of Senator Chuck Grassley, who has been accusing the company of trying to bribe him. Grassley (whose top campaign contributors aren't in telecom,) insists that LightSquared promised Iowa a call center if the deal was approved. LightSquared says the person Grassley is referring to was a private citizen not working for the company (though he does apparently know LightSquared billionaire backer Phillip Falcone) and that Grassley's claims are unsubstantiated.

Hmmm...

Seems like LightSquared didn't attempt to bribe the senator in a legal manner.

Though honestly, I think you should be able to bribe public officials with private sector jobs.

No, the problem is they did not offer enough which made it look like an insult!

LightSquared keeps going for "Hail Mary" passes in the hopes of salvaging their disaster of a business plan. It was an interesting gamble; take relatively worthless satellite spectrum, acquired on the cheap, and convert it to valuable terrestrial spectrum thus cheating the taxpayers out of billions in spectrum auction revenue. All the while rendering many of the GPS's owned by those same taxpayers useless. You have to admire the hutzpah.

Re: Hmmm...

How is this any different than what Bain did with its companies. Buy the companies raid the pension fund to give themselves bonuses and then have the taxpayer on the hook to pay for the deficit to the value of 44 million.

Hire Chris Dodd?

Maybe Lightsquared should hire Dodd, he seems to be able to bribe legislators with far greater success, and even brag about it publicly.

I also noticed that this was the 3rd recent use of the "B" word; that involved congressmen/corporations deals.

Outing corruption as bribery, is a trend I'd like to see continue and evolve.

Re: Hire Chris Dodd?

Me as well, but I think in this case they just did not bribe him correctly and he may have thought it was a scam.

Re: Hire Chris Dodd?

Chris Dodd can also do the job but he failed with SOPA Romney might be a successful vulture capitalist for the job. He did the exact same thing with bain

"Your letter also states that your staff member 'immediately' told Mr. Ruelle that his comments raised red flags and that he should cease any further contact with your office," Paoletta wrote. But just a half hour after the questionable phone call, "your staff member sent an e-mail to Mr. Ruelle stating, 'Thanks for the phone call—here's my e-mail address, let me know what time/day works best for you.'

"This response demonstrates that your staff member did not think Mr. Ruelle said anything inappropriate in their conversation," Paoletta wrote. "The e-mail regarding red flags and the request that Mr. Ruelle cease contact with your office was sent by your staff more than a half-hour after that encouraging e-mail."

Less than a week after asking Falcone's lawyer about his relationship with Ruelle, LightSquared "received a call from a reporter at Bloomberg News with information that your staff had contacted him suggesting a story related to an alleged quid pro quo involving a purported request that you drop the investigation of LightSquared in exchange for a call center in Iowa"

A measly call center?

The Senator probably can't find his way to Capital Hill without his GPS. To hell with that measly call center.

My Congressional Reps & Senators are clean.

Did anyone notice that not one good word was said about our Congressional Representatives and Senators in Washington in this forum?

Why, it just makes me feel so good that I live in Georgia and no one has caught my Georgia Representative and Senators with their hand in the Cookie Jar.

I mean, they're so honest that I'm going to go right out and vote for them once again this coming November.

That's even while they try to pass legislation that would OUTLAW independent cable providers from installing networks that would compete against the Big Duopolies (market condition that exists when there are only two sellers) like they did in North Carolina.

What New

Probably the FCC are getting more money than the senators in bribery money. The FCC are taking so long and giving this company so many chance to fix this problem with the GPS. I bet some senators out there is paying some one to leak those result of those test.
