When Comcast's Powerboost goes wrong (or so very right)

Comcast's "Powerboost" technology gives cable broadband users an extra boost of bandwidth for the first part of a large download, effectively doubling the speed of connections for a limited time. When first deployed, a glitch resulted in users effectively getting this speed all of the time, a phenomenon our users called "Permaboost."

While Comcast corrected the pleasant glitch, they've subsequently licensed Powerboost to other cable providers like Cox -- where users saw the same PermaBoost phenomenon for a while. Canadian cable provider Shaw has also licensed the technology and -- you guessed it -- users are reporting speeds that technically shouldn't exist:
So ever since PowerBoost was enabled I've been getting extremely fast speeds for what I'm paying for. I currently have Shaw Extreme-I and with SpeedBoost I can get download speeds of around 3MB/s which is pretty cool. Just here is the thing...I can download for hours at that speed. It's pretty awesome. Anyone else noticing this?
I live in Saskatoon. I didn't do anything, it just is locked at around 30mbit, which is pretty funny. Of course not everything I download is that fast, since alot of servers cant even send it that fast, but for those who can it is pretty cool. Im betting this wont last long.
Providers usually notice the unintended bandwidth bonanza and crack down within a few months.

Wow...

How funny. People getting MORE bandwidth than they are paying for. This reminds me of a story that someone in my local area had told me...

But imagine how much you could download and how little you could pay with this glitch going around...

What are you talking about? It's not like some prominent broadband site posted a front-page article about it - oh, wait - damn you, Karl

Wheres mine?

I don't even get powerboost anymore.. I don't really care however, its a gimmick IMO. Permaboost could be useful though.

Re: Permaboost...

Permaboost should be used to showcase new speed tiers.

In a year or so, this is what you could have.

When a friend of mine on Comcast got Permaboost and was getting 32 megs constant, I was drooling over it.

I even had a chance to get it, but due to a tech glitch, I was limited to 8.88.

Permaboost sustained speeds will start to happen for us by the end of this year.

Yours shouldn't be far behind since you're Docsis 2, aren't you? We're still 1.1 here.

Re: Permaboost...

Honestly what I want more than anything right now though is a little boost on the upload speed.

Shaw's fastest plan currently sits at 25mbps download, and 1mbps upload.

They seem to think people don't need upload speed, when exactly the opposite is happening: people need more upload speed. It's painful uploading files to my servers, I have to do it overnight since sometimes it can take hours for what really isn't that much data at all. Even for more common activities like uploading videos to YouTube, sending large email attachements... all so SLOW!!!

No kidding. Here, Comcast's Blast! tier at 16/2 is actually 32/3 when boosting. That would help a ton when sending a gig of video to someone. Instead of taking 12 hours at 768, it'd take 4 or less.

On your end, 25/2 would be an improvement.

Good luck.

It was a trip!

I was getting 3500KB/sec(KiloBytes/second) sustained for hundreds of MB.

Too bad there was nothing out there that I wanted to really download.
I was tearing up dl.tv videos!

USE IT if you can! 'cause when it gets taken away, it leaves you feeling empty.

Just to get a boost to 300 (KB/sec!!!)! Though clearly these Shaw users have it really, really bad.

USERS are not reporting. It's only one user - that too anonymous. I used to be able to hit 4 MB/s for a good 15 seconds before it'd crawl back down to usual. I heard no such story from anyone else around the town.
