DC residents discover T-Mobile doesn't offer HSDPA there...
(old news - 05:02PM Thursday Oct 23 2008)
tags: coverage · business · wireless · T-Mobile US
As we expected, the launch of the HTC G1 with Google's Android OS has highlighted the fact that T-Mobile's 3G network lacks coverage in a few tiny towns and hamlets, like oh, the cozy metropolis of Washington DC. The Washington Post discovers a 3G phone isn't so much fun without a 3G network: the Post saying DC locals can go into T-Mobile shops and tinker with the phone, but they can't buy one. In fact, T-Mobile won't won't sell the G1 at stores outside a 2-5 mile radius of their 3G coverage area, though you can buy one online and suffer through slower EDGE connectivity (usually around 200kbps on average, if the planets are aligned).

T-Mobile gets brown nosing points while explaining to the Post why they're so late in deploying 3G services:
"This is first time we had to move federal government systems from spectrum," said Kathleen Ham, vice president of Federal regulatory affairs for T-Mobile. "They were not slow to move, but were surprised how fast we wanted to move."
You see it wasn't because the government was annoyingly slow to vacate $4 billion worth of spectrum that no longer belonged to them, it was that T-Mobile had the nerve to want to quickly resolve the fact they have been a 3G laughing stock. The company insists they'll have DC up and running by late November, at which time they promise to have 120 cities live. If DC is struggling to get online, you can imagine how spotty coverage across rural America and second tier cities is.

I know, T-Mobile even had massive disclaimers when you order it in a non-3G area.

Good for them for at least admitting they don't have the coverage, though.

Got mine the 20th. AMAZING device and living 45 mins out of chicago I'm rocking and rolling in 3G and wireless.
They'll have it everywhere they do business soon enough.
Have friends with Iphone 3g and they are all drooling at the openess of apps on my G1 and the quality of the G1.
It's sad that people here drop a line like yours without knowing what they are talking about especially when T-Mobiles explained where and when the 3G goes live.
Washington will go live soon enough and it was'nt T-Mobiles fault for delays as you certainly read above.

actually, mine works amazingly well in the bay area and my 3g speed tests have all been between 900kbps and 1100kbps. was quite a bit of fun watching pages load twice as fast next to my friends 3g iphone.

I pre-ordered my G1 and I got it two days ago. In Miami, T-mobile has 3G coverage readily. I'm always on 3G anywhere I go.

Works great in the East Bay. Nice and fast. The only qualm I have is battery life surfing on the 3g network, seems about 2 hours by my estimation.

Re: haha

You get 2 hours? With 3G on I can watch the battery go down in like an hour. That is my major complaint.

Piece of Junk

got my G1's yesterday and gotta say what a piece of junk. Phone crashed within the first 3 minutes of using it and had to take out battery to restart it. Phone is fat and ugly. 3G is slow I'll stick to my iPhone 3G for Personal & Business use and just use these for our Apps Development...

Good thing you didn't crash your Iphone because you wouldn't have been able to take the battery out.

What do you have to buy a new Iphone when the battery dies? Or do you have take it to a service center to get the battery changed?

I don't even use a cell phone myself. Brain cancer and nickel rashes don't you know. I'd probably be safe from the cancer since I didn't start using a cell phone when I was kid(I was 6 when the "Brick" came out). But why take chances.

Re: camera

I don't think you have to worry about brain cancer as long as you keep wearing that tin foil hat you got on.

no iPhone you just hold the Home & Sleep/Wake button and will hard reset it... very easy to do no need to take out battery...

Oh no! Say it isn't so!

Sorry, but if you want to make some serious cash, develop on the iPhone with Cocoa APIs.

I'd prototype for Android but I'd focus on the iPhone.

I'm personally not surprised about Voicestream [I mean T-Mobile] as that company has been junk before it was separated from Western Wireless.

Here we go with the "JUNK" talk. Why is it junk??? cause it doesn't work well in your area? well in other areas it's excellent. I've had it for 6 yrs now and I've never had an issue with it.
And you can't blame the company for the people who buy the device eventhough the company says YOU DON"T HAVE 3G IN YOUR AREA.

At least they are trying to catch up to the rest of the companies out there. And they are trying to provide a worthy phone at that. I bet if they aren't trying to deploy 3G, you'll also have some quality words for them.

Why do people like you make baseless proclamations with such certainty, as if you're the arbiter of what is and isn't acceptable for everyone else? You're not. Your opinion is no more valid than anyone else's.

For ME, T-Mobile has been excellent. I worked for BellSouth so had BellSouth Mobility (then Cingular) for many years starting in 1988. I've also had Sprint service, AT&T (before Cingular merger), and Verizon. For the last 2.5 years I've had T-Mobile and I can honestly say my service has been the best I've ever had. Call quality and ability has been excellent whether I am at home or traveling. And their customer service has been outstanding, something I certainly cannot state for the other carriers I've dealt with.

The "junk" are your uninformed suppositions you try to pass off as fact.

Let me see here. Comparing the Toolkits, Android is at least 18 months behind, but you defend that Java toolkit till your blue in the face.

Uh, please point out to me where I ever stated anything about ANY "toolkit" or defended any such "toolkit"? Maybe you should work on your ability to read and comprehend instead of blindly attacking.

EDGE really isnt that bad...

I have got to be honest here, I have had 3G phones for (many) years and I like it very much. However, I also have had some phones (Winmo) that only had EDGE and it worked fine. People are quick to slam EDGE, however it worked just as good as 3G for streaming live TV from my Slingbox. There is no question that 3G is better than EDGE, BUT lets not forget that millions of people had a 1st gen iphone and didnt complain.

3G and Pre-Ordering

I was one of the "pre-ordering customers" for T-Mobile's new G1. I received my phone Monday and have enjoyed using it despite the fact that 3G hasn't come to my city, yet. In fact, the V-Stream network seems to work a lot faster than loading and browsing times on my previous device.

Wi-Fi is awesome and features are great. The application store , even though is new, seems to offer a wide variety of programs available for download.

This phone was worth ordering, worth the price and worth the wait for 3g. I have been a T-Mobile customer since 2001 and have never had to complain about a single issue. It is a good cell company.
