Wireless battle against AT&T/Verizon won't be easy...
(old news - 08:29AM Friday Apr 03 2009)
tags: competition · business · wireless · Comcast
The cable industry certainly have an uphill battle when it comes to offering the "quadruple play," and fighting AT&T and Verizon on the wireless data and voice front. Cox is taking things to one extreme by building their own wireless network. Comcast so far has been content to partner with Clearwire, but Silicon Alley Insider's Dan Frommer goes one step further by suggesting that Comcast should buy Sprint. It might be easier for Comcast to buy their way into the sector instead of build their way there given capex costs and limited spectrum, and Sprint could probably use the sugar daddy, given their struggles of late.

Don't you mean a gravimetric beam using low frequency harmonics generated by the dish array?

Shit, yes. Sorry. My morning geothermal cross-inducer laced my coffee with ten millimeters too much genetically-altered metabolizer.

Though I hear good things about the United Federation of Sprint and the Universal Church of Comcast's efforts to quell dissent on the lower fourteen colonies.

Comcast has the cash to do it.

Sprint would be renamed "Comcastic PCS!"

"I'm a MAC."

"And, I'm a PC."

"What's that new gizmo you're holding, PC?"

"It's the new Comcast PCS Google Phone. I can even use the iStore products on it. It has a 80 gig HD too."

"Wow! Where can I buy it?"

"At any Comcast PCS store or Comcast office."

Ding-Ding!

Better idea.

Comcast buys sprint, renames the whole company Sprint PCS for wireless. Then call the land service "sprint fiber optics". Sprint used to push the whole fiber optic BS in the 80s and 90s, now comcast can revitalize that and pitch it as a new fiber optic company.

Existing comcast customers call their service comcast, all new customers sign up with "sprint fiber optics" (still delivered over coaxial for the last mile). This way comcast can acquire new accounts under a new name with less bad reputation. All new customers would get simple everything plan for voice, data, mobile, and video for one low price.

F@#$ calling sprint Comcast PCS, sprint is a better name than comcast for marketing.

Re: Wow...

Comcast bounces around on the reputation meter to me, and Sprint has always been pretty darn low, since their shenanigans with CISCO with the Internet backbone in the 1990s.

So, I don't see Sprint as bueying the repuation of Comcast. Of course, I'm sitting here with Comcast's brand new "Extreme" service (10megabitspersecondoutbound, 50megabitspersecondinbound, tested and confirmed to be such) before I've even laid a penny on paying the first bill which that is reflected on (haven't seen it yet), so I'm in the happiest part of happy land with them now. That's frosted on top with the memory of four tech visits, each very motivated to get their job done right, to get the service to work.

Yes, I know, it coughed a bit when the new teir was born, but I was ready for that so didn't mind.

Sprint? Evil Enemy #1, a small dovermin pincher barking at the feet of the dinosaur deathstar AT&T as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, you don't want to be crushed by the behemoth, but that dog will tear you to shreds before the big one gets close to you.

Comcast has plenty of negatives to its name, but nothing so treacherous. So I'm not at the same place as you with the naming. To me Comcast is a mixed bag, but Sprint and AT&T are just garbage all through and through, with little bits of good history and humanity to hang to, only because they're on the same planet as we are.

I miss Metrophone , that was real customer service. Comcast should just buy Sprint, convert to LTE. There you go instant phone company . A real competitor to Verizon, and ATT.

Who remembers that Comcast actually is the ORIGINAL owner of Nextel? (Comcast spun off Nextel in the late 1990s *prior* to their purchase of Jones Communications, and well before AT&T Broadband was on their radar; Comcast still has long-term contracts with the Nextel side of Sprint because of their DirectConnect features.)

Perhaps its all the talk as of late of *unwinding* previous transactions (mostly related to problematical asset valuations), and now whenever a spinoff hasn't quite worked the way some thought it would, they want to retract it (such as the talk during the late 1990s about possibly re-assembling the Bell System).

What next? Comcast being dragged into re-acquiring Muzak? (Muzak is another former Comcast subsidiary; it was previously the Sound Division.)

I just became part of a Sprint Contract. I am actually HAPPY with their service.

I thought I was Safe and Insulated from Comcast, way down here. Now you're telling me I'm in danger of being drawn into The Heap.

Bail out?

All we need is for Sprint to cry to the goberment that they might go bankrupt. Comcast can save the day and the goberment can force Comcast to buy Sprint at a much reduced price.

As long as it's not Embarq

As long as it's just Sprint the wireless company and not Embarq.

I think Embarq is a separate company anyway and is being bought out by centurytel.

God NO!

I don't seem to have as many problems with Sprint as many others, but if Comcast were to buy them I'd have to jump ship FAST. I finally got to a reasonable plan and cost and Comcast would be sure to fix that right away. No thank you. Comcast: go buy T-Mobile. Leave Sprint alone. Thanks.

Add cell into the mix? Hell yes!

Maybe Virgin Mobile will by them out... they run on Sprint anyways.
That would be fine by me too!

Should Comcast Just Buy Sprint?

Comcast needs to not even bat an eyelash Sprint's way. I truely dislike Comcast, but love my Sprint service. If Comcast does acquire Sprint, I feel the quality of service I have now would deteriorate.
I have not had any problems with Sprint.

Match made in heaven

Sure. The consolidation of two crappy companies with half-assed products would be great. Sprint and Comcast's un-uniformity throughout the country would be a perfect match.

Sprint needs bailout; Comcast should avoid them

Sprint needs a bailout and Comcast should avoid them like the plague until they are available at firesale prices.

»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090403/bs_nm/us_sprint
Credit rating firm Standard & Poor's cut its outlook on Sprint Nextel Corp (S.N) to "negative" from "stable", saying the wireless carrier's financial health could deteriorate further this year as it loses more subscribers.

Sprint shares fell 4.21 in early trade on Friday after S&P issued a report that affirmed its "BB" credit rating but said the company appeared to be losing customers to rivals such as AT&T Inc (T.N) and Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) and Vodafone Group (VOD.L).

"The ratings on Sprint Nextel continue to reflect a weak business profile because of its elevated churn relative to its peers, anemic subscriber trends, and significant competition from other wireless carriers, which is particularly important as the industry continues to show signs of maturation," it said.
Comcast, or someone else, will be able to pick them up for nothing in a couple years. And the gov't may even kick in a few billions to boot.

Re: Standard & Poor??

If it coming for Standard & Poor, it is alway right. Just look at all the rating they did for banks. I give there rating with a lot of salt. Beside, The only part of Sprint that have lost subscriblers is Nextel. By the way, the new boost unlimit plan will help stop that.

Hmm... if Sprint shows enough weakness, and is deemed 'too big to fail', the government will take over and 'give' it to Comcast.

SK Telcom or BT

Methinks a foreign telcom will buy Sprint before a US cable company does.

Sprint is definitely getting better (I'm satisfied) but the Nextel side will continue to drag Sprint down.

If Comcast gets into cell service

I think they should take the same approach as Cox and build their own network.

Comcast already has hundreds of towers standing and I bet fiber run to a lot of them. Put in antenna's and use the fiber to transport it back to the headend. They obviously would need to put in more, but it may be cheaper than buying Sprint..

Should Comcast just infect Sprint?

Does Sprint really want to be tainted, contaminated, and (insert negative here) with Comcast's less than stellar image?

Not to mention all the further restrictions Comcast would likely add to Sprint's network. What would we see next; a cap of 250 texts per month?

Re: Should Comcast just infect Sprint?

Simply everything plan would be renamed "simply nothing plan"

"with Comcast PCS simply nothing plan you get exactly that, nothing. For just 99 dollars a month* you get nothing, no texting, no data, no voice!. For just 16 dollars a month each, you can get 10 mins of voice, 10 text messages, and 10k of data! After the first 10 its only $.25 per min/kb/text!"

This would of course have an awesome commercial with a lot of crazy multicolored writing.

*first for 3 months, then only $249.99 a month
