Hindustan times article prompts action...
(old news - 04:41PM Thursday Nov 30 2006)
tags: wireless · world
When the Hindustan Times reported that "Bangalore is going to be the second city in the world to be fully WiMax enabled, something even Silicon Valley can't boast of," Silicon Valley civic planners apparently got annoyed. "That's right, Silicon Valley is trying to keep up with the Bengaluru Joneses," jokes Salon. Silicon Valley Metro Connect, a consortium including IBM and Cisco, recently announced plans for an ambitious Wi-Fi network covering 38 cities across 1,500 square miles. Silicon Valley's solution will be Wi-Fi not Wimax - but the backbone will support an upgrade to Wimax, according to IBM.

Re: No evny here

Yeah but the guy in Bangalore is reading Better Huts and Gardens on his PDA while out gathering dirt for his family to eat, while the poor slob in Silicon Valley is stuck behind a desk in his Den day tradeing over a cable modem connection.

Speaking from multiple trips to Bangalore, the posting above is very pejorative. Just as many cities have slums and multi-million dollar homes, Bangalore is no different. The phrase "ugly American" comes to mind.

It's the "ugly American's" prerogative to be pejorative.

Re: No evny here

Who are you calling ugly, ugly? We have some nice huts here in America's slowly dieing Silicon Valley and that's because it's so damn expensive to live here so all of us can't live like say Jabba the Hut here!

The house may look bigger, but there are probably 37 indians living there.
Most people are not aware of the banana republic class connectivity in santa clara valley. Many neighborhoods have only dialup, large parts have sporadic 384k dsl.

Bangalore Utility Building

Reminds me of NYC.

Granted some parts of India look like the shack you posted, but Bangalore isn't one of them. And as long as we're here, I saw similar shacks inhabited in the 5 years I spent in GA.

Re: Bangalore is going FTTH

For a country like India which is densely populated, and infested with idiotic politicians who make it their duty to dig up the roads and all the underground wiring along with them, WIMAX/WIFI is the way to go - unless someone can prove it wont give everyone brain cancer...

Like US doesnt have idiotic politicians!!

Every place has its issues...the thing to appreciate here is the fact that Bengaluru is moving ahead of most of US in terms of connectivity. Atleast now some US telcos can do something about changing that rather than fight over net extortion...err...neutrality fee.

the future

as ably capable bengaluruian, i foresee the future....
year 2020...

Differences
the huts in bengaluru have been shunted to silicon valley and vice versa is true of the skyscrapers in silicon valley
.......that's not all.........wait......

there ends switching..........
Similarities
bengaluruians have not changed at all.....they continue to be warm hearted, hospitable unlike the silicon valley punters in their peak.........
