Siri is a Little Bandwidth Pig
iPhone 4S Consumes Twice the Data of iPhone 4
by Karl Bode Friday 06-Jan-2012 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · stats · wireless
According to network firm Arieso, Apple's voice-powered personal assistant gimmick service Siri results in the iPhone 4S using twice as much data as the iPhone 4, putting additional strain on carriers who were already struggling to accommodate the device. Their full study on smartphone data usage is worth a read, noting that heavy users are getting even hungrier, with just 1% of subscribers now consuming half of all downloaded data on wireless networks.

Click for full size
"The introduction of increasingly sophisticated devices, coupled with growing consumer demand, is creating unrelenting pressure on mobile networks. The capacity crunch is still a very real threat for mobile operators, and it looks set to only get harder in 2012," said Dr. Michael Flanagan, CTO, Arieso and study author. “The mobile industry needs new investment and new approaches to boost network performance and manage the customer experience."

The firm notes iPhone 4S users download 276% more data than the average iPhone 3GS user. The next heaviest smartphone users are Galaxy S users, who consume 199% more data than iPhone 3GS users. Still, you wonder how much of the surge in iPhone 4S data traffic is just early adopters having fun with their phones, and if this is anything more than a radar blip as users show off their new devices.

The firm also has a vested interest in highlighting congestion to sell products that can resolve it, so their suggestion that there's some unmanageable bandwidth apocalypse afoot is par for the course for these kinds of reports. The story remains the same: carriers that fail to adequately invest in network infrastructure tend to have problems. In an age where quarterly investor returns trump consumer interests or even network health, there's more than a few companies that fall into that category.

latest and greatest

The ones who consume the most data are apt to be the one who always have to have the latest and greatest in gadgets. Sure someone people go from an old razr to a new iphone4s or galaxy-s, but I'd bet the more common users of the newest phones are the regular upgraders who are tech friendly and want to have the newest data capabilities.

Re: latest and greatest

Yup. The newer devices will always be using more. The heavy users aren't chugging data away on 3GS'es.

So this is basically a non-story.

Not really. These days a ton of people have iPhones, and a lot of them are on 3GS'es and 4's and don't really care to upgrade.

Our world is becoming more and more data hungry

While new devices are partly to blame, our world has become more and more data hungry. We rely on our smartphones (those who have them) more and more each and every day. From streaming video, streaming music, swapping pictures, videos, etc it is a given that we would be using more data. It's only a matter of time before the current caps that are put out by AT&T and Verizon will be too little for the average consumer, which will be more reason for them to gouge us for more money.

What a load of crap...

The only reason that carriers "struggle" to accommodate so-called data hungry devices is because they fail to adequately invest in their network infrastructure. Don't blame the devices and end users, blame the network operators.

With their low cap, punitive overage tiered data plans, they generate plenty of revenue to provide more than adequate of bandwidth for all paying users.

They run advertisements touting the wonders of wireless living. But, heavens forbid the subscribers ACTUALLY USE the data that they pay for at $15 per GB...then the same wireless operators cry about not having enough spectrum and data hogs.

Re: What a load of crap...

Rather than investing billions in their network att invest billions in the apple brand. Att thought their investment in apple would starve tmobile of subscribers hence the lets buy tmobile since they have the better network. They took a gamble and lost. Meh one more dropped call... one more throttled user... as long as the stock holders are happy who cares. iphone users just love the fact they have an iphone. who cares if it works!

Bandwidth

Questionable. I'm using an iPhone 4S (on Verizon) and spend quite a bit of time monitoring the '3G' "data" access (vs. wifi) due to paranoia over the 2GB cap on my plan. The most data I've used in 30 days is .045 GB. Of course, I'm not watching Youtube, streaming Pandora, or debating "Siri" while on the rareified and delicate data network.

You're missing the best in life. I've quite enjoyed the nasty grams from the carrier the last couple months about being in the top 5% of data users...

Re: Bandwidth

You're right about missing out on some diversions. The bulk of waking ours are spent on someone else's dime so I'm disinclined to peeking at YouTube or watching the market twitches. I got the 32GB ver. to have my 'data' stored on the device, and can listen while fixing widgets.

Sadly, quite few times when when I have dared to tap the priceless Verizon 3G data stream access is not consistent.

From my 1st Star-TAC to the iPhone it's been an interesting ride, but a constant throughout is the packaging and monetization of access to our airways. Especially so, is the successful consumer indoctrination as to our need for the service.

Fear not, I enjoy the goodies and will pay my bill.

ahhh. The Star-TAC wasn't that a great device. Brings back memories. I still have one in a old phone junk draw.

.045 GB? what do you use it for? I used more data when I had a 3GS than that. I'm not paying all this money to check webpages.

Re: Bandwidth

You're right of course. I 'd like to get some sort of 'money's worth' from my rock-bottom $80 per mo.bill. When I first got the phone they drummed-in that there's overage fees on data. A week into the plan the phone's data usage 'meter' said I'd already used 3GB of data ( on a 2GB plan). I guessed that I'd forgotten to turn-off data after viewing a Kardashian Family Christmas video. So moving.

Checking VZW's website info it showed I'd only used some miniscule . 000 GB. The iPhone lied to me, and Siri had no sympathy. So, I'm just paranoid. How's VZW on billing disputes?

And the Carriers Laugh All the Way to the Bank

The carriers are happier than a pig in shit that the newest devices make it easier to use more data. Artificially low caps, high overages, and an exponentially increasing thirst for data make investors happy.

Glad to hear it...

Maybe this consumption will get the carriers out of the "GTE-Airphone" pricing they're trying to get customers to accept as the new normal....

I can confirm this

Monitored my iPhone 4 usage pretty regularly and definitely noticed a large increase with the iPhone 4s. I disabled Siri and sure enough my data usage is back to iPhone 4 levels.

I've had my 4G android for less than 2 weeks and have consumed 1 GB of data... luckily I have all my apps now downloaded and I have a 4GB plan. Though if I wanted I could blow through that as well...

Not Siri. Any other guesses?

Siri data usage is minimal per »arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/···ates.ars

quote:
If you use Siri 2-3 times per day at an average of 63KB per instance, you might expect to use 126KB to 189KB per day, or 3.7 to 5.5MB per month. For 4-6 times a day, that might come out to 252KB to 378KB per day, or 7.4 to 11MB per month. If you use it 10-15 times per day, you might end up using 630KB to 945KB per day, or 18.5 to 27.7MB per month.
So, worse case, Siri adds 30MB per month in data use. Or about 1.5% of the 2GB data plan.

Apparently Arieso has its head up its Arieso.

Future

In the future, I'm sure AT&T and others changes it up so that you basically add on a "voice" option to your smartphone data plan. Right now if you sign up for a new phone the first option is which voice plan do you want? It's going to be the opposite with 3 or 4 data tiers, maybe each comes with a certain amount of minutes and you can get unlimited minutes for $10 more a month or something.

Of course they will price this for maximum profit, while claiming it represents value/choice, coughbullsh*tcough.

And?

I have 4 lines with ATT. I pay about 220 a month. I have unlimited data on my iphone 4s. I use about 5-10 Gb of data every month, i dont ever use Wifi. Im not about to route my data threw my home connection when i am paying out the ass for the service. ATT- I PAY YOU WAY TO MUCH FOR YOU TO COMPLAIN. Im using too much data? Your network cannot handle all the iphones ? WHOS PROBLEM IS THAT? it sure as hell isnt mine

How's the throttling working out for you? In the AT&T forum people are self-reporting throttling at usage over 3GB...

Re: Siri

My usual Siri response is: "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble contacting the network now. Can you try again later?"

In terms of data usage, it's just sending a compressed recording of your voice to Apple, and Apple is sending a response back to the phone.

There's a big difference between a heavy user on a iPhone or

Users using an iPhone or Android device are not sitting there downloading torrents 24x7 like users on a broadband line at home.
These are users who are actually using their devices, maybe the worst offenders are those who stream music and movies, but in this case it's something that's a valid use vs theft by the other group.
