Sirius/XM To Stream Via iPhone
New iPhone app to launch sometime this Spring
by Karl Bode Thursday 12-Mar-2009 tags: business · wireless · alternatives
The Associated Press reports that Sirius/XM will begin streaming its satellite radio service via the iPhone sometime this Spring. The freshly-merged company has faced some financial troubles of late, leading to a lot of discussion about whether broadband (and specifically wireless broadband) has essentially made the technology irrelevant. Fortunately for Sirius/XM, a $530 million cash infusion from Liberty Media recently saved the carrier from bankruptcy. It should prove interesting to see what kind of pricing we're talking about -- given a lot of users are perfectly happy with free Pandora on the iPhone.

It probably won't be given that they're now (or are planning to) charging for streaming?

It will be free. They talked about it in the conference call this morning.

Already exists in another life...

AT&T is not known for doing anything for free. They have the XM app on WinMobile devices and want $7.99/month for it. That was before XM decided to charge for their service. There is simply too much double-dipping going on here. AT&T charges for the phone and a high cost for internet, XM/Sirius gets their fees for monthly service, then they both get additional money so you can hear it on your I-Phone...no thanks.

Re: Already exists in another life...

They also have a java (since most SE has java-based phones) version of the XM app which appears on the SE phones they sell. Along with HBO video and MLB Game Day also for subscription. All these things were available on their CHEAP unlimited data plans and for additional subscription for quite some time.

Charge for Stream?

That would be very bad press for them. Perhaps charging for the iPhone app would slip pass the masses, but if they start charging for the stream it'll kill subscriptions I'd think. Certainly for me, and I am a huge Bubba/Howard fan.

Re: Charge for Stream?

Streaming fee is now $2.99/month if you are a regular subscriber on a "qualified plan", $12.99 if you are not. You can bet this is a pure revenue play and it won't be given away for free.

Re: Charge for Stream?

It wouldn't make any sense to offer a pay service for free just on the iphone. The interesting thing will be if they allow you to buy the streaming for 12.99 for the iphone. Since it would directly compete with their normal satellite service since the iphone makes the streaming portable.

It won't directly compete as their online offering does not offer play by play sports coverage and their are a few other channels missing

I have lifetime free internet streaming

I bought the life time subscriptions when I got my Sirius Radio so I have life time online listening so I hope they do come out with a app for the iPhone and iPod.

depending on how they structure their price plan - maybe yes, maybe no. the online streaming was changed such that you would be required to pay for it when your existing contract on the "old terms" expired. however, if you purchased a "lifetime" plan, then you will never expire (and never have to pay for streaming). wife and i ponied up the $499.99- (they credit you for time left on your existing contract) for our radios.
i wouldn't be surprised if sirius/xm did charge. although, they might pull in a lot of new sales if they didn't? i know that i love pandora, but you can't get the talk radio through pandora.

i'd die traveling through northern arizona without *some* radio.

I will pass

I have xm now and want to ditch it for the free internet radio I can get now with my iphone. Sense the merger xm has been pure crap worse then FM now. I can't handle the repetition on BPM any more. I will not want to infect my iphone with this crap. So many better choices on the iphone people need to stop bailing xm out and just let the company go out of business already.

That is my biggest issue with XM/Sirius. Ever since Karmazin started running things, the entire product became as bland as the Viacom crap he left behind. It's all about skimping on royalty fees to put more money in the CEO's pocket.

Sirius ruined the awesome product that was XM Satellite Radio. Faction is the biggest joke of a channel Ive seen my entire life- THE MUSIC OF ACTION SPORTS!!! how about instead of a bunch of channels that play a mix of rock, punk, and rap- you have channels dedicated to all rock, all punk, and all rap. I could go on all day about how I hate this merger. I miss fungus 53. 202 is the only reason I still have Sirius/XM

I agree with BPM having crap programming now... i loved it before the merger and now i can't listen for more than an hour without hearing the same songs over and over again... of course this happens right after I buy the life time subscription and get a new radio for my car that has the XM direct connect...

Interesting

The comment about the technology being irrelevant due to streaming is interesting. Can't figure out how to stream to my vehicle in the middle of west Texas without getting a f*cking iPhone, for which I have no use.

Just about any SmartPhone can do it these days. I'd say the Iphone probably has more apps for it, better interfaces, easier to install, etc but any BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device can do basically the same thing. (or any Android phone)

True. But I don't want a $80/mo cell phone bill so I can listen to a free stream or XM's offering. I'm happy with my $35/mo cell phone bill and a $8.13 (I got a 5 year plan) XM bill every month.

And I *ESPECIALLY* don't want to do business with the Death Star (tm).

Bingo. I don't know about you all in the States but up here data charges on wireless phones can be expensive. The monthly subscription for a Sirius-XM sub would be cheaper than paying for the data.

Not to mention stupid, I can get XM reception everywhere, the same can't be said for cell service up here in NW CA, nor in many areas of the west. Maybe the author lives in NYC or Jersey, and has no clue the world is bigger than the Northeast.

Slacker + Blackberry Storm = Free

I'll pass. I already use Slacker.com on my Storm for Free. Best steaming service yet.

Oh.. If you want to cancel Sirius/XM and are having the run-around with their "customer retention" department. Just tell them that you are moving outside of their service area such as Europe, Asia, ect. They usually accept this as a reason to quit your service, with no hassle.

I just told them I hadn't had the radio connected for almost four months and didn't intend to plug it in again, which is true. She still offered me free months...we'll see if they try to ding my credit card next month.

Mel got them pro-forma profitable and will now cash out.

Re: Slacker + Blackberry Storm = Free

I have never heard of slacker. I got Wunder Radio through Itunes for my iPhone and it works great. There are over 20,000 stations available with all kinds of search options.

I use that coupled with a FM tuner at work to get my normal station that was bought out a while back by another station.

Wunder Radio is $5.99 and there is no monthly fee's.

I have a blackberry, but as I understand it the berry app and iphone app are more or less the same except that with the berry you can cache stations in an SD card to listen to while your ohone is out of signal range (like a subway, etc). That being said, I love the berry app and I use it & the internet app almost every day. I also sub to XM but that's more for Ron & Fez.

Not worth it.

I had Sirius for a long time and its nice to have some channels with out commercials but its not 12.95 nice. Lots of phones can do streaming of music and on my old WM phone I had an app to do either Sirius/XM or ORB can do it now. Yet with the price increase whats the point? I can not hear a whole show anyways either driving or streaming. I've tried to cancel at least 3 times and have gotten about 9 months of free service that I don't even use. All those named channels are just a name value Howard does 4 shows and 3 days off or more. Even Bubba is doing a FM broadcast while we pay for a Friday cuss day.

If they had shows via Itunes or something that I could get and listen to and start and stop over time I would do that. Yes I could do that myself but I don't need that hassle. Maybe they need to join the revolution of free to cheap. Since its not going to happen I'm not going to worry about it.

Plenty of alternatives already exist

"given a lot of users are perfectly happy with free Pandora on the iPhone."

And last.fm (free client) and Simplify Media (free server, $2.99 or something iPhone app) and Orb (free server, expensive iPhone app, $9.99, but can also stream video and live TV) and who knows what else. (In fact, you may be able to stream Sirius/XM with Orb server already).

Burn up 5GB of bandwidth.. Faster..

Yep.. Since the iPhone is *ONLY* available through AT&T and they impose a 5GB Cap, you can expect your bucket to be emptied even faster.

Oh wait.. They don't tell you this up front..

Where is the love?

Again, everyone on here loves to bash XM and from what I see the iPhone too. Having both, I think it's a great move. It does not say if it will be limited to WiFi or not but it could so it would not really use more data over AT&T's network.

Pandora is nice but does not have all of the content of XM.

I have Sirius built into my Ford Focus and use a portable in my truck for Sirius satellite radio and when I am in the city HD Radio sounds way better than satellite radio. The only reason I have satellite radio is I travel all over the country and there are a lot of dead spots. But when there are FM radio dead spots the cell service isnt any better!

Why is this news?

I have been streaming Sirius on my Sprint MotoQ9c for over a year now for free.

This seems to me to be a yet another case of the iPhone getting publicity for gaining the capability to do something that people using other platforms have long been able to do.

Yawn.

Doesn't this app already allow streaming of Sirius on iPhone (provided you have streaming as part of your sub)?
