The good news and the bad news

Skype recently celebrated its fifth birthday which caused users to reflect on the recent changes that have taken place with the VoIP service. A recent surge in activity and a new unlimited international calling plan are things that bode well for the business. However, there remain a lot of complaints about Skype including problems with the changes made in the beta version of Skype 4 and frustration that SkypeCasts have just been dropped from the service. These concerns have many people wondering whether Skype will be able to regain the innovative edge that made it a leading product when it was first released or if number five is the last birthday that the business will be celebrating.

Skype will be fine!

Skype is great!

Yes 4.0 interface kind of sucks. But Skype is working on making it better.

hope I'll still be able to use skype

As a blind computer user, I'm hoping the skype 4.0 interface will still be able to be used by those of us who are blind. The interface skype has now works well, why should it be changed? Granted I haven't used 4.0 yet, but I'd want to be sure I'll be able to use it before putting it on my system. Also, why drop skypecasts? there are oddities of skype I don't like, for example when I'm in a call, and a PSTN user calls me, alot of the time, the number comes up as unknown, even though the number's caller ID isn't being blocked. Also, when I'm in a conference and an "Unknown" number calls, I can't add them to the existing conference! finally if I'm hosting a conference, why can't they allow others to also host conferences, like in older skype 2 releases? Other than those oddities, I have had good luck with skype, even with my skype in and skype out abilities. I think Skype may be the only provider that allows for calls over 2 hours per call, since many other SIP type providers drop your call without warning after 2 hours and I hate that!

My beef...

When minimized or behind a browser, no sound when a text message is sent to you. No flashine taskbar button either just a " [1] " apears in the button.

Ah well, I blow hours online playing games while chatting with a fellow player.

no longer use skype

I am no longer using skype after the past 2 years and never having any SPAM now for the last 2 weeks I've been getting a ton of them I get them now like every 20-30 seconds telling me to look at their sexy webcam... whats even worse is I go and select BLOCK on someones name and then that person can still message me.. why have a block option if it doesn't work.

I have that problem also, but look at their usernames carefully when blocking. They'll be different by like one number or letter... You just have to keep blocking. It took me about two weeks of blocking spam to get it under control. Now I only get random spam about twice a week. Much less than Windows Live messenger.

Re: no longer use skype

It depends on how public your screen names are. Mine are all over the web (I'm an IT consultant) and get picked up by spambots. If you keep your names private, then you should be fine. I have an AIM account that I use for my home that is an internal IM network. The name never leaves the house, and I haven't gotten spam on it for nearly 4 years now.

Long time Skype user

I started using Skype in its Beta days. Since then I added Skype out, and now, after 5 years I use it exclusively as my international calling plan.
Ver 4 UI REALLY sucks! I tried it a couple of times and always gone back to ver 3.x.. I also added a Linksys DECT phone which allows me to use Skype all over the house and yard. I hope they do not try to "fix" it, cause it ain't broke..

I currently use..

I currently use the skype subscription services, and I've not had one complaint about voice quality, etc. I like it so much so that I've gotten rid of my home phone line, and I will use my cell phone for any 911 calls I may need to make.

On the 4.0 interface, I liked it, but I am not a fan of the size, nor of the fact that non of the user defined hotkeys worked.

As for spam, it didn't used to be so bad, and now its horrible!

skype!

I purchased a skype out account recently. I also use the video at least once a week. I love skype and spam isn't much of a problem for me yet. I just block them.

As far as version 4 goes, I can understand the reasoning for the full screen but still not a fan after 2 weeks.

Does anyone else think the call and video quality is atrocious in 4.0? I am giving it one more chance tonight before I uninstall and go back to the previous version. Whether its video or just an incoming regular phone call...it sucks!

Calling plans

I got the unlimited US & Canada calling plan, as well as a Skype-In number. I couldn't be happier. Since I started studying in Europe it has saved me a ton of money not having to pay the 39 eurocent fees to call the US. Its just like having a house phone that goes wherever my macbook does.

Advantage of Skype Pro?

Versus magicjack.com?

I bought Skype unlimited when they offered it at 50% off so it was $15 for 1 year. That was not bad.

Euro calling plans

Are former USSR republics not considered Europe? Maybe I missed something, but I could not find a calling plan for Russia or Ukraine.

Oh well, at 13 or less cents per minute, it's still the CHEAPEST and best quality service I can find around.

Been using it for few months and very satisfied.

SKype 4 beta still sucks

I had craptastic service again last night. two dropped video calls and the video quality was awful. I'll be switching back to 3 tonight. I can't take it anymore!
