An explanation for their explanation...
(old news - 10:42AM Tuesday Aug 21 2007)
tags: business · VoIP · software
Skype yesterday explained what caused the global network outage last week, noting that millions of rebooting PCs (fresh off Windows updates) exposed a code bug that ultimately brought the network down. Many people wondered why Windows updates hadn't caused this problem in the past, or why the crash happened two days after Microsoft's Tuesday update was released.

Skype has posted a new explanation that notes this was a perfect network storm of sorts -- and self-healing network resource algorithms that had worked in the past couldn't handle the problem this time around:
In previous instances where a large number of supernodes in the P2P network were rebooted, other factors of a “perfect storm” had not been present. That is, there had not been such a combination of high usage load during supernode rebooting. As a result, P2P network resources were allocated efficiently and self-healing worked fast enough to overcome the challenge.
While the explanation doesn't explain why the crash happened two days after the patches were released, the team does say they squashed the bug that led to the crash in the first place.

Wow, this keeps getting better

"In previous instances where a large number of supernodes in the P2P network were rebooted, other factors of a “perfect storm” had not been present. That is, there had not been such a combination of high usage load during supernode rebooting. As a result, P2P network resources were allocated efficiently and self-healing worked fast enough to overcome the challenge."

so in other words, you customers need to not use Skype so much when you don't know that the supernodes are down.

Next up, Skype Premium Service! For $19.99 a month you get guaranteed service when supernodes are rebooted.

Actually they don't blame Microsoft but give them praise instead.

1. Are we blaming Microsoft for what happened?

We don’t blame anyone but ourselves. The Microsoft Update patches were merely a catalyst — a trigger — for a series of events that led to the disruption of Skype, not the root cause of it. And Microsoft has been very helpful and supportive throughout.

The Microsoft team was fantastic to work with, and after going through the potential causes, it appeared clearer than ever to us that our software’s P2P network management algorithm was not tuned to take into account a combination of high load and supernode rebooting.

It is still mostly a free service or very cheap service. I don't understand why anybody expects 5 nines from them. I cannot imagine then what will happen if google goes down for 2 days. There will be probably class actions with 100 millions plaintiffs

Ah come on people, give them a break!

They have been forthcoming all along and explained their problem in details. And they are not blaming Microsoft for their problems.

They are humans after all, and acknowledged the problem and said they fixed the bug. No software is 100% bug free.

Conspiracy

They had to take the system down to update the software so Uncle Sam could wiretap.

Sounds possible to me, any thoughts?

Considering the feds just gave themselves carte blanche to listen in on anyone, anytime, anywhere, anything is possible.

What's next? The dog ate the power cord and that's what made all the servers reboot simultaneously. I say they should have quit while they were ahead yesterday. The more they lie the more ridiculous the excuse becomes and even the hardcore dittoheads are starting to question the story.

Email I got from Skype.................FYI

You may or may not know but last week Skype wasn't available for a
couple of days. There were a number of reasons for this and I am
delighted to say that the problem is now well and truly sorted and
everything is back to normal. For those of you who tried to use Skype
during that time but couldn't, we're very sorry. For those of you who
didn't try to use Skype - well thankfully you were not affected but we
want to reassure everyone that Skype is now working happily and the
problem is fixed.

We know we have many faithful users out there who give us feedback
(good and bad) on what we're doing as a company. The Skype community
makes us what we are. Without you, our users, we simply wouldn't
exist. We've helped people stay in touch with their friends and
family over the past four years without any massive hitch and we want
it to stay that way.

When the unexpected happens, it's important to remember the people who
stuck behind us and whose loyalty humbled us. I want to thank
everyone for their support, patience and being part of the Skype
community. And for those of you who missed out on using Skype last
week - I want to especially thank you as well.

As a goodwill gesture to all you faithful Skype Pro, Skype Unlimited,
SkypeIn or Skype Voicemail customers, we're adding an additional seven
days to your current subscription, free of charge. And even if you
didn't miss out on using Skype last week - you can still have a week
free on Skype, on the house!

So please enjoy it, call your loved ones, friends, family and
colleagues and thanks again.

Talk soon,
The people at Skype

I got one too. Nice to see a company that steps up to the plate like this without being prompted, threatened..or sued into doing so.

Nice job skype.
