Hopes to be a mobile VoIP leader in 3 years
(old news - 10:26AM Sunday Jan 13 2008)
tags: business · wireless · VoIP
Despite gloomy predictions for the future of the business, Skype currently remains one of the leading names in VoIP technology. The company is working to remain on top by focusing its development on a current favorite VoIP trend: going mobile. They’ve made several steps towards this goal, including launching a Skype phone overseas at the end of last year. However, there will be several problems to overcome if the move into mobile is going to be a success.

Some say that 3G networks aren’t capable of handling both data and voice in a way that will allow the call quality to transmit successfully. The relative lack of Wi-Fi availability in many areas, the economics of the technology and the difficulty of working with carriers are other hurdles that Skype faces in going mobile. The company says that they can overcome these obstacles but that it will take 3-4 years to see widespread use of Skype-enabled mobile phones.

I Don't See This Happening

Unless the mobile operators decide to A) charge more for mobile Internet, to make up lost revenues, and B) use QOS to make VOIP work.

Also, I wonder what the latency is like. What's 3G latency like? I really don't know.

As for Wi-Fi, that has to be a secondary method of connection. In some areas, like where I live, there's almost no Wi-Fi hotspots. I'm inclined to think it's easier to roll-out 3G than it is to roll-out more Wi-Fi hotspots. In rural areas, often T1 is the only broadband choice remotely affordable, so I don't see a lot of people doing that.

Re: I Don't See This Happening

There are other Methods to Use Skype remotely from ANY phone or device that supports Dial Tone and Touch Tone without the need to use ANY Data channels.

So this means you can even use landline POTS phones as well as any cell phone or Blackberry like devices because their is no need to install any software on the phone or use any data services.

The important part of this is there really has never been an IM/PSTN like Bridge that could be used such as:

PSTN -> Skype Name

PSTN -> MySpaceIM Name

In both cases the above people are not using a phone, so they could be located anywhere in the world and it would not cost you anything using Skype to speak with them using MyToGo for Skype from your phones or devices like Blackberries. You can also check your Skype Voice Mail for FREE as well from your phones and devices.

Of course, when needed, you could use Skype Rates for your local, long distance or International calls when those rates would be more cost effective than the rate for the same call from your Phone or Device providers rate.

MyToGo for Skype is free and you can find out more information about it here:

So, as you can see, Skype really has the most Portable VoIP services of any current VoIP provider today which makes it more Mobile than any current provider too date.

skype

I must say skype has been good to me so far. I use dit when i didnt get coverage at my new place until i switched carriers. I dont plan on getting a home phone. What skype needs to do is pull themselves away from just the most technological people that use computers and psp's. They already have a good video chat. How about find an easy way to wire the house to skype voip and find a way for video chat. free video chat to people with skype would be a huge bonus for people. If i didnt have tmobile's voip i would be looking at skype.

Re: skype

I have used skype on my mogul with sprint and it works fine. I think with 4G and open networks skype will have a chance. Exp if Google has its way.

it could work...with Revision A

to the first hop, it's around 80-90 ms...assuming there's EVDO Revision A in the area, and that the device is Rev. A capable

If those conditions were met, it'd be theoretically possible....only problem is that there isn't any software out there yet that makes this easy to do.

now, if there's a WiMAX phone with Skype...it could definitely work; the bandwidth and latency would be there.....it would simply be an issue of coverage (I can see WiMAX VoIP competing head-to-head with traditional cellular in the years to come).

Re: it could work...with Revision A

I use skype with a sprint CDMA rev. A card in a linksys wrt54g3g router. The skype client is on my laptop. The video is pixilated a little, but voice works no problem. And its not like I have a great 3g connection.

voip in saudi arabia using mobile phones

I live in Saudi Arabia, and use VoIP on my mobile phone all the time. Over here, we have 3.5G HSDPA, and the networks provide upto 7.2mbps. I use gizmo project, and use the built-in VoIP (SIP) client on my phone. There's a half second delay in voice transmission at times, but otherwise, when on 3.5g, it seems perfectly normal. It's as good as a normal call.

Skype phone, doesn't use data

The skype phone the article refers to, is the Three sykpe phone, here in the UK.

As far as I understand the actual skype call is handled in the same way as a normal call, to the base station, then it is routed over the Internet. If the call was data, all the way along, and had traffic levels similar to normal GSM, I think the Base stations would keel over and die.
