I don't expect every feature request to be allowed, but when certain features are not allowed simply because it will take away revenue .. it can be a little frustrating.

| | Don't Understand It If Skype wants to put out crippled clients, then people will go elsewhere. Backroom deals with the Telcos will do nothing but push people the the TONS of other services. Skype does NOTHING different or revolutionary with their products.
I pay a yearly fee to Skype for Skypein and a few local phone numbers... but I think this will be the last year for that!

Apple controls the iTunes store and likely is working at the behest of AT&T, and Verizon controls their phones. Skype can chose not to release any client at all for those devices under those controls, but is no client better then a crippled client?

| | Data and Skype limiting in the same day? Way to go AT&T, you've given me 2 reasons not to buy your crap. And just a day after I was giving you serious consideration! | |

But you know Verizon is going to follow with their own data plan changes. I'll be very surprised if its more than a week before their announcement.

1 edit | Fring Why not just use Fring ... it does all of the above without the silly restrictions? (For those that don't know Fring is a VOiP client app that can connect to the Skype network and does many other cool things, like a video call or you can setup your own SIP VOIP service.)

Fring apparently also has background push notifications enabled. I'll have to give it a try.
|
| | iPhone OS 4.0 will lift this restriction since it's specifically designed to allow 3rd party apps to multitask.
see this blog post from Skype.

| | They've really hosed things I'll stick to my prepaid blackberry boost, with unlimited everything for $60 a month, I tether and get 249dwn with my thinkpad what more could one need. Talk about nickel and diming the public holy *hit, they can keep their Icrapy prices and apps. | |

| | Smartphones and VOIP do not mix... Skype's actions appear to be: "if you can't beat 'em join 'em". True low cost VOIP is the killer app we are waiting for smartphones. -- Ken | |

| | I wonder if it will affect other phones I have a Nokia, with both versions of the "official" Skype client (one provided by my network, who gives me free Skype access, and one by Skype themselves).
I wonder if they intend to charge for use on other phones too. We haven't had the rather strange "can't use 3G" restrictions that the iPhone had.
