Skype For iPhone Released With A Few Twists
Comes with fees, and no push notification...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 02-Jun-2010 tags: business · alternatives · VoIP · net-neutrality · wireless
Earlier this year Skype unveiled an "exclusive" arrangement with Verizon that involved releasing a somewhat-limited version of Skype for Verizon phones -- which in some cases eats user minutes -- seemingly defeating some benefits of Skype. It was widely speculated that as part of the arrangement, Skype slowed their development of Skype for other platforms -- though now they've finally released a version of Skype for the iPhone. Unfortunately for users, this version too seems to have some odd restrictions:

iPhone users can make free Skype-to-Skype calls for the rest of the year but after that will have to pay a small, monthly subscription fee. Perhaps even more disconcerting for Skype users, the app -- at least initially -- apparently does not support background push notifications, meaning users must have the app up and running to receive incoming Skype calls.

These restrictions seem to be custom-made to help AT&T avoid the erosion of SMS and voice revenues in the face of smartphones, push IM clients and mobile VoIP. Of course it remains amusing that Skype keeps striking these kinds of restrictive, closed agreements with companies like AT&T and Verizon -- after spending a large chunk of the last five years complaining about closed networks.

Surprised?

I'm not surprised at all by this. It all comes down to money, not providing the best product/application to the customer. I don't expect every feature request to be allowed, but when certain features are not allowed simply because it will take away revenue .. it can be a little frustrating.

Re: Surprised?

I'm not surprised either - I pay the $36/year to use Skype unlimited to call landlines (over WiFi) and make use of webcam service.

Don't Understand It

If Skype wants to put out crippled clients, then people will go elsewhere. Backroom deals with the Telcos will do nothing but push people the the TONS of other services. Skype does NOTHING different or revolutionary with their products.

I pay a yearly fee to Skype for Skypein and a few local phone numbers... but I think this will be the last year for that!

What choice does Skype have? Apple controls the iTunes store and likely is working at the behest of AT&T, and Verizon controls their phones. Skype can chose not to release any client at all for those devices under those controls, but is no client better then a crippled client?

Data and Skype limiting in the same day?

Way to go AT&T, you've given me 2 reasons not to buy your crap. And just a day after I was giving you serious consideration!

And I'm giving serious consideration about switching to Verizon once my contract is up in August.

But you know Verizon is going to follow with their own data plan changes. I'll be very surprised if its more than a week before their announcement.

Fring

Why not just use Fring ... it does all of the above without the silly restrictions?
(For those that don't know Fring is a VOiP client app that can connect to the Skype network and does many other cool things, like a video call or you can setup your own SIP VOIP service.)

Re: Fring

Fring apparently also has background push notifications enabled. I'll have to give it a try.

iPhone OS 4.0 will lift this restriction

since it's specifically designed to allow 3rd party apps to multitask.

see this blog post from Skype.

upsetting

Upsetting how companies spend time and resources to restrict a service or product instead of using efforts for better innovation products and services. We see this time and time again too! I bet this is only in America.

They've really hosed things

I'll stick to my prepaid blackberry boost, with unlimited everything for $60 a month, I tether and get 249dwn with my thinkpad what more could one need. Talk about nickel and diming the public holy *hit, they can keep their Icrapy prices and apps.

Smartphones and VOIP do not mix...

Skype's actions appear to be: "if you can't beat 'em join 'em". True low cost VOIP is the killer app we are waiting for smartphones.

@uk.net

I wonder if it will affect other phones

I have a Nokia, with both versions of the "official" Skype client (one provided by my network, who gives me free Skype access, and one by Skype themselves).

I wonder if they intend to charge for use on other phones too. We haven't had the rather strange "can't use 3G" restrictions that the iPhone had.
