Skype Now Accounts For 12% Of All International Calling Minutes
Skype to Skype: 54 billion minutes of talking...
A new report by TeleGeography indicates that Skype continues to slowly erode the market share of the world's largest phone companies. The firm, which tracks international calling traffic between 88 countries and over 1,500 routes, found that projected growth of all international voice traffic was cut in half in 2009. International telephone use has grown at 15 percent over the past 25 years, but that growth is slowing. Meanwhile, Skype, considered in the report as the "largest provider of cross-border communications in the world, by far," saw its share of international calling minutes jump to 12%, up 50% from last year. Skype-to-Skype users calling each other accounted for 54 billion minutes (out of a total of 406 billion) last year.

MJ's international rates are expensive.

You pretty much have to be smoking MJ to use MJ for international calls.

Skype is a much better service, IMHO, than Magic Jack.

1. Software only (no hardware or drivers needed)
2. Skype to Skype = free (even international)
3. Free video conferencing
4. Skype Mobile (WinMo, iPhone, etc. for full Skype, and a dialaround app for less intelligent phones)

... and OS independent. I spend almost as much time weekly (if not more in some cases) on Skype than the cell. I don't burn through minutes jabbering to people on different carriers or plans, and I can conference with six of my friends for Mario Kart off of the computer in the living room.

Yes - Skype runs on Linux, Windows, iPhone, WinMo, Mac, Nokia Tablet, PSP.

Magic Jack runs (when hardware is recognized) on Windows (XP/Vista/7) and Intel Mac

I agree, now that "mainstream" people like Oprah have picked it up, these numbers will go up!

Which is why MagicJack should make SIP info available for their customers. I use it on a SIP softphone and it's definitely OS independent that way

As for Skype, I have it but don't use it. Not enough people I know use the service.

Good Mobile Deal

Whenever I travel internationally I use Skype out. It is the best way to call from the hotel to home for 1.9 cents per minute. No need to mess with calling cards or 1.80 per minute hotel charges, or the 1.20 - 2.99 Cell phone per minute.
Now if I could ever get the wife to feel comfortable with skype I could skip all of the charges.

Hotels have also wised up and are now charging around 10-12 usd a night for internet.

Re: Good Mobile Deal

I was informed on another thread that if you buy the USA $2.95 p.month unlimited plan, that when you travel overseas and call back to a USA telephone number it is included in the plan. Thus for less than $36.00 per year you get unlimited calls to the USA whether you are in NJ PA UK or Singapore....

This is true. My brother is in China for the year and subscribes to this plan.

$1.50 per minute with verizon

Well when Verizon Wireless wants $1.50/min to call Europe, hell yes I'm going to use Skype! I have no idea why Verizon is so expensive. By comparison, it's something like 15¢/min with Qwest, but I didn't have any service with them at the time I was calling Europe.

Does not erode anything!

First of all, Skype does not ERODE anything! Do you think I would be dumb enough to call friends for 2 hours at a time if I was paying Verizon $1.50/min?? No! I would just send email if it was that expensive to talk!

Secondly, I use Skype video for all my calls because the "phone companies" are too stupid to come up with a video conferencing standard for the last 20 years. Phone companies can not offer a universal service like this, so I use Skype.

If Skype didn't exist, I would be unhappy but not a dime more of my money would go to the phone companies!

It is in the title. International Calling. Skype is cheaper than your pre-paid plans, land lines etc... and free for Skype to Skype. All in all, more traffic, and subsequently more mintes/cash are going to Skype and not the others.

GV rates are comparable, but they use the phone network. After 7pm, we use GV, before we use Skype.

I've been using G5 since long before GV bought them. Unreliable and dropped calls, while not overwhelming, are simply too many to ignore. Hopefully Google will improve G5's reliability problems.

Skype to go

Skype is awesome.

I used skype to go while traveling in Poland last month. It gave me a local warsaw number. Coupled with a prepaid cell phone it cost me about 3.5 cents/minute to call back to the USA.

That is 3x cheaper than the cheapest local prepaid cell phone call you could make from WITHIN the USA.

It was also stupidly easy to use... Call up skype-to-go number, press 1, listen to the computer-lady read your quickdial contacts, press the corresponding button (or press 2 and dial the number manually)

Good if you don't want the FBI tapping into your calls

Skype isn't like your traditional teleco, so the FBI can't just subpoena a wiretap.

Skype Rocks

I use to use MJ but since abandoned it, good thing my year is about up and that I didn't sign up for multiple years. I use Google Voice and Skype for my international/long distance calls and texts. Their video/voice quality is better than most. I talk to my new girlfriend who is currently working in the Philippines all the time between the two services, saves a bundle. Hope they continue to do good.

Little-Known Skype Factoid

There's also the fact that *all* the news services (not just the wire services like AP and Reuters) use Skype (yes, that includes CNN, NBC, even FOX, and their local O&Os and affiliates). If it can work for both broadcast and cable, then Skype must be doing something right.

make it mainstream

After so long of a run with providing services the way they do, why haven't they made an uncomplicated way to use a damned SIP device?!? This would make their service much more mainstream & popular than it is. More of us would then consider voip service instead of being stuck with telco/cableco bundles.
