3 edits | Weird Uuuhh...what is the point of skype over verizon 3G when you can talk to the person already using your phone? I am lost. Does this mean that you can use your cellphone video camera as a webcam and have the other person see you on skype as you would on a regular computer using skype?
Hmmm...is it that you can talk to them for as long as you want and it will not use your cellphone available minutes? -- The Internet is about to go down....it is actually.

| | | Re: Weird yes, the biggest advantage is that you would not use any minutes. For some people, however, if you are on the same network, I guess that wouldn't matter. I don't see the big draw to it myself. I personally think my 3G voice is better than going through Skype. | |

Skype is HUGE for international calls. We work with a lot of expatriates who utilize Skype to talk to their family back home, (Skype to Skype), for free. If they had the ability to reach their family members on their cell phones, they are no longer limited to only reaching them while they are at home and in front of their computer. In that regard, it's a very big deal.
For domestic calls I agree, I don't really see the point.

Eg. Since I work from remote, I use iPhone / Skype over WiFi for 2-6 hours / day.

| Pricing Structure They will also probably impose a surcharge on any data deemed to be going to specific domains. The net result is you will probably wind up paying about a $1/minute to use Skype versus the current Verizon charges. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. | |

That definitely is not it. If money is changing hands, its Skype giving Big Red money not the users. Well, not anymore than they are already.
Skype on my blackberry would be HUGE. As was stated before, wouldn't have to worry about going over any minutes and would save plenty in wireless charges. -- One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done. -Marie Curie

| | Skype over Verizon 3G Already Available Skype over Verizon 3G is already available on the Android platform through Fring and various other 3rd party applications. This seems more like an announcement that Skype will be updating their own apps than anything else. | |

| Unrestricting use The reality is that they have put restrictions on the phones. They are not "perhaps" going to release those restrictions? Why? Because they can end up making more money by doing so.
Take the sim card out of the device. Put it into a nokia n900. Hey you just got the ability to do skype, sip, google talk, jabber and nokia's voip. Out of the box. Then the phone is open source. So you can port over whatever. Mangler, mumble, etc etc.
Better yet. Do some research and find a company which does 3g wireless internet usb keys. Wimax is 4g. Somewhat of a gamble the devices might not even have a sim card. Take the sim card out of the usb key with the applicable data plan. 5 gigs even with heavy heavy voip usage wont mean much. You'll have all the voip you want and everything... but no phone plan.
What verizon is doing though is making sure they get both. You pay for your phone service. You then pay for the data usage also. Why wouldnt they make every opportunity for you to go over your limits into overages?

| | | | Re: Unrestricting use Which made me wonder why is Verizon announcing anything at the GSM conference. Is it part of a Vodafone announcement? | |

| | | | No SIM cards is only partially true. My BB Tour has a SIM in it.

| | Verizon will never lose Verizon probably figured that they are making any lost revenue back on gouging dumbphone users on forced data plans.
Verizon always wins.
Sure they are a for profit company, but it amazes me how many paid lobbyists and employees of their organization will defend every action the company takes no matter how rediculous or greedy it is in the name of capitalism.
