Skype Says They Fixed Android Security Flaw
New Android Version Available That Protects Your Data
Last Friday the folks at Android Police noted that Skype for Android suffered from a security flaw that could have allowed a malicious app to gain easy, unencrypted access to user contacts, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and instant message logs. This morning we received an e-mail stating that Skype has fixed the problem, and has released a new version of Skype for Android without the vulnerability. "We have had no reported examples of any 3rd party malicious application misusing information from the Skype directory on Android devices and will continue to monitor closely," says Skype. "Skype takes users’ privacy and security very seriously and sincerely apologize for any concern this issue may have caused." Of note: the new version also integrates 3G calling (unless you're on Verizon, which gets a specialized version of the app).

3g calling

Actually, even Verizon users should switch to this real Skype app. "3g calling" on VZW still charges you carrier minutes. Extremely pointless.

This finally allows all users to make true voip calls using Skype. And if you're on a carrier (like T-Mobile) which offers smartphone data-only plans (without voice plan requirements), then you can grab a skype-in number, load up your line with cheap minutes, and just use your data plan and wifi for all of your calling needs.

Glad to see Skype is making progress on their Android app. Now it just needs video calling, and I'll actually be happy.

Exactly. Was just going to say video calling should have been included in this. There is other options to use judging by what is in the marketplace, but they do not seem as good as what Skype normally puts out.

People talk about this all the time, but I've found that the voice quality of Skype for Android when calling most cell and landline phones, even from a strong wifi signal, is so poor that it is completely unusable and I have to call people back using a cellular call. So as much as I'd love to relegate my carrier to being a dumb pipe, and making all my network usage generic 'bits' that they can't control as much, the services for it just aren't there yet.

I am able to use this updated app on Thunderbolt without using voice minutes it seems.
