Skype Serves Record 27 Million Simultaneous Users
As their share of voice growth continues unabated
by Karl Bode Tuesday 11-Jan-2011 tags: business · wireless · alternatives · VoIP · consumers
While companies like Google and MagicJack have been trying hard to take on Skype, the companies continue to be facing a very steep uphill climb. Skype this week set a usage record with 27 million simultaneous users during peak. That record was thank in large part to the recent release of the new Skype client for iPhone, which allows for video chatting over both 3G and Wi-Fi connections. Data this week explores how Skype growth continues at a fairly astonishing rate, with Skype users accounting for roughly 102.5 billion call minutes over the past year -- or one out of every five international call minutes made during that time.

Re: question

Skype to Skype voice/im/video is free.

Skype to Traditional line and Skype to SMS has a charge.

Skype Group Video Calling (basically a video conference call) appears to be free for now but will have a charge in the future (they currently just give you unlimited free trials).
EDIT: Looks like they now charge for group video calling

They do charge for Traditional line calling and assignment of a Traditional line number to your skype id.

Pricing is here: »www.skype.com/intl/en-us/prices/

Re: question

ok good. i don't see the value of skype yet since you always need a computer or smartphone to use it.

the whole idea of the smartphone using skype is beyond me other than the video calling. Most people are able to make voice calls on their phone so I don't see the need to pay extra just to use skype instead of regular voice minutes.

Re: question

Main selling points for me is the voice quality.... When you are skype to skype... it is like you are there... 180 degrees from other voice platforms (it makes landlines sound like cell phones )

Also the im, voice, and video are all encrypted end to end... great for keeping your conversations private.

Would you rather pay $0.99/minute (provider charge) or $0.03/minute (Skype charge) when calling other countries?

Re: question

as do I. Linksys CIT 400! One of the last great skype handsets made in recent years that doesn't run on iOS or Android.

I've completely cut the cord in my house. Only have internet coming in and run everything off skype / boxee / hulu / netflix. Not to mention FTP / Apache / etc.

There are many devices that run Skype without a PC. They use your existing HSI connection. No one beats their international rates and of course skype to skype is always free. I use them as my business line. I'm cutting vonage loose for itpvoip.com($10/mo plan). And that's only for my young kids incase they need to call 911. We haven't trained them on using the cell phone for that. But they both know how to use the land based phone in case of emergency.

So 1 skype gotcha is no E-911 service.

I use a pre-paid cell phone. Thanks to skype, I was able to save some money and have free video calls home.

For the first 5 months of this year, my son and I were in the hospital. He was being treated for cancer. Anyhow, I brought my desktop to the hospital and used my web cam to video chat with the family at home. My wife loved it.

Then as we progressed to temp stays at the hospital, I would use skype on my Ipad. The voice quality was great over wifi, and it saved me minutes on the pre-paid cell phone.

iPod Touch

I upgraded Skype on my iPod Touch 4 and was excited to have the camera's recognized. Unfortunately, most of the people I used Skype with (family) have stopped using it and I find myself with few if any online contacts anymore. Must be an age thing as most us are in our forties but I am the computer professional so I am the only one who uses the newest technologies.
