New platform for distribution

Based on some stories I've read about folks getting paying jobs based on popular YouTube and similar site uploads, it could be a new medium for folks to break into.

The basis of Skype is for communication not entertainment.

Skype is a VOIP application which does a piss poor job in my honest opinion in just that, press in a number during the call and the rest comes out all garbbled.

Companies need to stop with this all in one thing because it's not working and eventually every device would be the same in the market.

I prefer Gizmo project which is based off SIP and jabber and the quality is not only better I find it more reliable as well and never experienced any issues with it.

To top it all off it's going to be almost my main client soon because I can crosstalk between networks thanks to jabber.

Calls are not free but in the end you get what you pay for and I had a call in number a year ago for 3 months and it operated perfectly. I now have call out credits and the service is operating perfectly.

Works fine for me and my friends as well. We use it more for gaming though because we use it as a group and depending on what you use either Mic and speakers or digital headset is clear on our ends.

Unfortunatly, I don't see widespread internet TV service taking off anytime soon.

Currently, a lot of corporations, universities, and even countries are banning or blocking their VOIP service. That might be due to bandwidth restrictions, politics, etc. Now with their proposed TV service, I can see even more entities blocking (or at the very least, traffic shaping) that service for the same reasons.

In the future, hopefully bandwidth problems would be solved. However, that still leaves politics and whatever else.

Re: _

For me, for about a year now i have been pleasantly happy with skype. the fact they added free calls to the us is even better.I am surprised it didn't get that much bigger. As for banning of skype on university's i think one step that would greatly help was if it didn't act as a p2p client. the address book works on the p2p basis and fills up the firewall log all with its uses. IF they could tame that or centralize that I think we would see some improvement. As for bandwidth i do not think that is actually an issue, except to maybe the uninformed. As for gizmo, i saw this service but i have not tested it out. Skype has some major money behind it and free tv with ads over internet... sign me up.

University red herring

I am almost certain that Universities are banning Skype because it obviates the need for the exploitative phone plans that have been part and parcel of college life for a long time. It also makes call tracing much more difficult and they are likely frightened about legal liabilities.

Any "bandwidth" issue is a red herring. Students run all manner of p2p, file sharing, streaming video and other apps, each of which probably uses at least 10x the bandwidth of Skype.

Well I am just saying first hand the firewall issue is something I have personally seen.

ISP"s have been blocking skype off and on because they are trying to sell VOIP.

sounds like bad business to me. A temporary monopoly on the internet lines they serve.

Re: "free to broadband users"

I think it is expected that people on 56k will not be watching the tv over dialup.

An excerpt from the article
"The project, code-named Venice, will bring quality TV programmes for free to consumers who have a broadband Internet connection, he told Boersen financial newspaper."

this should really get the cable/telecom monopoly all worked up. net neutrality.... this is a good option for We the Consumer and this is prime rib to be blocked or degraded if net neutrality fails to go through. we could maybe see something cool here instead of the garbage they allow us on their tiered cable tv offerings.
