Skype: iPhone 3G VoIP App 'Coming Very Soon'
Company claims it will have 'CD quality sound...'
by Karl Bode Wednesday 03-Feb-2010 tags: wireless · alternatives · VoIP
After a number of reports, complaints, and a few FCC inquiries -- AT&T announced in October of last year that they'd no longer be blocking VoIP programs like Skype from working over 3G. Then, for whatever reason, AT&T and Apple again announced last week they'd no longer be blocking VoIP programs like Skype from working over 3G. With the strange, multi-belated announcement finally becoming real, Skype now says they'll be releasing a new version of Skype for AT&T 3G that features "CD quality sound," according to the Official Skype blog. Of course cheap (or free) wireless VoIP and long-entrenched carrier minute bundle pricing models don't really see eye to eye -- (neither do smartphone push IM clients and SMS, for that matter) -- so neither AT&T nor Apple were exactly in a rush to make Skype more useful.

When they say coming very soon I think they mean to coincide with the launch of the new iPhone with front facing camera...

I am one of those that are impatiently waiting for the release of the blackberry app that will not use minutes.

Not sure why.

I don't claim to be up on all this, but why would one need / want to use Skype over 3G?

Ha!
VoIP over 3G is often more economical than normal cellphone calls. For example, Google Voice's app allows you to place free long distance calls in North America. You use the app to place a call rather than your provider.

Free long distance has long been a feature for North American cellphones.

Re: Not sure why.

he means using Skype (or any voip app) won't count against your plan's minutes... although it can contribute to the quasi-unlimited 5GB cap. "Long distance" doesn't really exist anymore.

Fixed it for you... It does still exist with the back woods landline companies.

That is what I thought. It goes from being a "minutes" charge, to being a "data" charge. So as soon as these providers start clamping down on their "unlimited" data plans, this whole thing then becomes a "pay us now, or pay us later" thing.

Thanks

there are a couple of ways to deal with this: provide unlimited everything plans (would obsolesce these apps altogether), sign up users to mandatory text and data plans, or provide very low caps and very high overages.

Fixed it for you. Canadian cell phones typically pay for long distance incoming and outgoing. Also, even in the U.S., calls to Canada over VoIP are typically free, but cost $0.19/minute over cellular.

Canadian cellphones don't pay for any incoming charges (as long as they are in their HOME location). No matter where the call is placed.

For a fee, of course - as an addon on top of basic line charges.

No, more like over 3G you would not use your plan minutes and could reduce your cost.

I use Google's Voice App on my Driod with Verizon. I have the number used by google for the call back in my Friends&Family list. When I make a call through Google I do not get charged for an plan minutes on my cell. I also use Sipdroid through pbxes.org and make tru VoIP calls across 3G and WiFi with no plan minutes used.

Re: Not sure why.

Of course, if you have an "unlimited" plan, then you would save nothing by using Skype.

How many people do you really think have an unlimited minute plan?? I never would for the price they want to charge.

Re: Not sure why.

I LOVE unlimited minute plans. I got spoiled being on Cricket for several years. When Tmobile dropped the price on their unlimited plans I switched and signed up quick. My bill is the same price month in and out. No surprises. That's what I like.

I have an unlimited plan.... It beats paying overage... and I use skype over 3G with a 3G unrestrictor for international calls and skype to skype calls... but the quality just isnt there right now regardless, and as service fluctuates your calls are even more prone to lag and dropped calls... lets see if skype can pull off cd quality sounds...

I have been trying to figure out why I would want Skype with my iPhone and cannot come up with a reason; however, those who use their cell ALLOT certainly might.

If you want to place a call to Canada, you will have long distance fees, will you not?

I can think of a good one. How about a 3G iPad with Skype on it and only paying AT&T for a $30 data plan(which is available) and no voice plan. Unless Apple or AT&T somehow block the 3G iPad from download the Skype app, this should be possible.

Skype to Skype is secured... if your using an iphone it usually means you are using at&t (or any gsm operator)... gsm is wildly unsecure.

For example let us say you are wanting to talk to your home office while sitting in an unnamed companies Arkansas offices... if you use gsm they will most likely be recording everything you are saying and using it to get a better price for them... and a worse profit for your company... if you were using a skype to skype call instead... they couldn't listen in

CD Quality sound?

So is the "cd quality" sound only good from skype to skype customer calls?

I would figure your quality is ONLY going to be as good as the lowest quality codec being used... meaning if I call with skype , my buddy who's just on a regular cell phone, he's going to sound crappy like usual cause he's just on a regular codec. Would that be accurate?

Re: CD Quality sound?

just like on the PC and Mac clients... yes its Skype to Skype... once you hit the PSTN the quality will be that of the PSTN and the receivers phone.

I am sorry but anything is possible

Don't get why everyone is saying no one can record or listen to your call if it is skype to skype. If someone is smart enough and know what they are doing they can listen. You just have to know how to do it. Anything is possible today. Look at all the incredible things people are able to do that you never thought was possible. If you can think of it someone somewhere can do it. Not to say it wouldn't be difficult.

I hate the "CD quality" claim

Ten years ago, people were claiming 96-112kb Mp3's were "CD quality". Every time some app that has to do with audio compression comes out the "CD quality" buzzword starts flying.
