Skyway May Be Kaput
Customers Have no Service, Get No Answers
by Karl Bode Friday 18-Nov-2011 tags: satellite · business · SkyWay
Tipped by seagreen See Profile
Skyway is one of the smaller residential satellite broadband operations, and just like their larger satellite broadband competitors generally fare very poorly in reviews by our users. Users of the company in our forums say many customers have been without service for a week or more, with the company not being particularly clear about the reason. The company's website currently insists they're experiencing "technical difficulties" and that users should simply revert to dial-up. However, several of our readers (those who can get through) are being told the company is finished:

I finally got through to Skyway and the lady that answered the phone said they are not coming back. She tried to sell me Hughes Net for $49.99 a month with free equipment and installation.

Skyway did file Chapter 11 back in September, though it's odd that a complete shut down would have the company website pretending that "engineers are working on the problem." Either way, it doesn't do much for satellite broadband's reputation in general. We've reached out to Skyway and will update the post with any additional information.

What is wrong here

We have read about this sort of thing many times on these pages. What is wrong with these companies being up front with their customers when this happens. Up front or lying about it is not going to change anything in the end so how about some honestly.

or there is inward fighting where they are trying to keep it going but others may have thrown in the towel (or not paid the light bill). Hard to say the end is actually the end and not have hope that "it will all be ok", but such is a fact of life.

What reason is there for them to be upfront? The company, (if this story is true) is no more so there is little reason for them to bother. There is no reason for them to play nice, unfortunately. What are customers going to do? Report them to the BBB?

Re: What is wrong here

Yes there is a reason for them to be upfront. It's the right thing and the moral thing to do. Their customers deserve to know exactly what is going on. And if they are in bankruptcy then their customers can report them to the court. There are certain rules and procedures that they must follow even in bankruptcy.

of course it is the right / moral thing to do. However, in X number of days / weeks, the "customers" will be no longer. As a company there is nothing to gain by being upfront about this. Personally, i wouldn't feel right about screwing people over on this scale....but I can understand why others just don't care....they have no reason to. It isnt like they are hurting the companies reputation, there wont be one.

The longer you pretend to be in business, the longer suckers will continue to pay their monthly bills.

Bingo

There is no longer in ethics in business or government ... they will screw their subscribers/customers/voters/constituents any chance they get.

I wonder if they struggled to keep their mission critical bills paid and fooled themselves into thinking their key vendors would play along with past dues..... until one of them pulled the plug.

That scenario has been the final nail in more than one former provider.

Welcome to corporate America. They are trying to sell the company to someone quickly before all the customers jump ship. Once the company is sold management, customer retention, etc is all the buyer's problem.

And even more crooked if the customers withheld their bills for the value of the service lost... they would be considered past due for that amount.

Irony

"Because our technology is simpler, we're much less likely to experience equipment failure. Whereas two-way satellite systems require a complex node ("LNBF") to send AND receive, SkyWay USA's LNB only receives. Malfunctions of the two-way system's LNBF are common and expensive to repair -- requiring a technician to make a service call, often at the customer's expense. Though we rarely encounter problems, you can replace SkyWay USA's LNB almost as easily as changing a light bulb for $10."

Should say: "Because our technology is simpler, we're much less likely to experience equipment failure, but when we do nobody knows what happens and it takes awhile to fix"

Wondering

Sun spots

There have been a large number of Sun episodes in the last few months. This is a satellite product I think and high Sun activity is going on. Happened once can happen again.

Most

My theory well, my fact, there you go, is that if I do not get service, I dont pay. I have done this with many companies and it has never failed.

The price for stuff does not bug me what bugs me is when I pay for something and get nothing.

Its like going to a restraunt and ordering a steak, well scratch that ok ordering from a fast food place and paying for it and then saying sorry we are having some issues making your #1 meal please go back to the beans and soup in your cupboard until we fix this.

But yet you take my money anyways?

Oh and sir there is a 500.00 cancel fee if you cancel your order of 4.99, and by not paying your bill you default into a canceled state
