Mysterious 19Mbps not so mysterious....

User Cabal writes in: "There's an amusing article over at Slashdot, full of speculation about Comcast and speed tests, with a lot of amusing theories by folks who couldn't be bothered to read the Comcast website. The entire discussion quickly devolved into a network neutrality flame war." The user that is dumbfounded by his sudden 18Mbps connection has discovered Powerboost, a technology launched last June by Comcast.

Powerboost offers some impressive speeds for the first few moments of a large download -- sometimes significantly higher than what the confused Slashdot reader observes. The company started offering upstream Powerboost last May. Cox also started offering Powerboost in some markets earlier this year.

Powerboost

Yeah the powerboost is impressive if you have a new modem but if your still using one of the old ones seems your out of luck I think they have to be DOCSIS 2.0 compliant.

Powerboost requires Docsis 1.1 or higher to work. If you have a Moto Surfboard 5100 or similar modem, you're golden and will get PB up and down.

I routinely get 10-15 megs on my 8.80/768 connection. Upload PB won't be far behind to my area.

The thread appears to have spiraled downward from there.

To bad. I'm no Comcast fanboi but I think Comcast came up with a winner with PowerBoost. Very handy for those patches, updates, small Freeware downloads. Q for Comcaster's, how do you speed test removing the PowerBoost effect ?

Downloading and uploading large files for a few minutes at a time from/to fast sites (like Comcast's web servers or upload FTP area) is a pretty good test.

I thought iPod-equipped online game-playing 20-something programmers living in their moms' basements compiling Linux kernels who despise management, for-profit businesses, commercial software, religion, and family values were up on technology and could discuss something without flamewars or retaliatory moderation???!!??

I wish Comcast was as cheap as DSL here is. I've noticed when starting a download it starts off at about 536 kb/s then goes down to 102 kb/s. Interesting i thought. (BTW I use DUMeter.)
