And will be implementing a 'broadband boosting button'?
(old news - 05:19PM Wednesday May 16 2007)
tags: Video · business · hardware · Oddities
We're trying to decipher this Reuters article that says Sling Media, the makers of the Slingbox, will be boosting users' net speeds. "Viewing quality depends on Internet connection strength, and so later this year Sling Media will add a virtual button to its PC and cell phone software that will boost home broadband service speed," says the report. "A deal with Boston, Massachusetts-based GetConnected Inc. will let Sling users upgrade their broadband services some time later this year," says Reuters.

It has been interesting to see how this is interpreted, with some thinking it means they'll be reselling bandwidth on demand and others thinking they're launching an ISP. Less interestingly, it looks like it means Sling Media will push customers toward ISPs via GetConnected, which is simply a broadband sales middleman, in order to generate additional revenue. How this relates to "a button" or a broadband boost isn't clear, since we'd assume most Slingbox owners already have broadband.

The Cryptic Reuters report also suggests that SlingMedia will begin showing ads on the service as soon as this summer.

Update: One of our users offers a link to this video interview with Sling Media CEO Blake Krikorian.

Stick with what you know

Here another company goes trying resell broadband service. It hasn't worked in the past and it won't work in the future. It's just a good way to put themselves into bankruptcy.

You got it

That's exactly what it means. Most broadband ISPs have tiers and/or competitors, so pushing The Boost Button will try to sell you an upgrade or competitive service. It's all marketing hype.

Compression

I wonder if it isn't some sort of compression service like AOL's "Top Speed".

Re: turbo button?

Nah, more like the Turbo button on my old 286 that gave it a speed boost up to a blazing 12 MHz!

why?

If there actually was a button you could push to ramp up your broadband connection, why wouldn't you just tape it down permanently? Or just configure your connection to use the higher speed without needing a button? This is a bigger gimmick than Mark Callus calling himself the Undertaker.
