Sling Releases 3G Enabled iPhone Application
Product of non-existent AT&T collaboration released...
by Karl Bode Monday 15-Feb-2010 tags: Video · wireless · alternatives · bandwidth
Earlier this month AT&T proudly announced that they were going to stop blocking Sling Media's Slingplayer application for iPhone from working over their 3G network. AT&T had previously blocked the application so it only worked via Wi-Fi, stating that the application was too bandwidth intensive (though AT&T allowed equally bandwidth-intensive apps like Major League Baseball). AT&T stated they lifted the ban because Sling was willing to make the application less bandwidth intensive (Sling denies this and says they changed nothing), but it's more likely AT&T was worried about the FCC's plans to encode network neutrality rules. Whatever the reason behind all of this month's place-shifted drama, Sling dropped us an e-mail this morning to note that the new, 3G-enabled version of their application is now available for download from iTunes.

Since day one ive been waiting....

YAHOO!! it works! I'm watching my solo on my PHONE on 3G! no more long boring car trips, no more lack of tv! This is just too cool!

Ive paid $30 for an app before, (Logmein ignition) I rarely pay 0.99 For an app. I spend less than $5 on apps per month, but this one is worth every penny. (TBQH, I'm surprised they didn't up the price for the 3g release to $40)

3g playback is a bit choppy on "high" quality, but when I set it to "standard" quality it works well. Note: 3g coverage where I live seldom reaches above 200kbps, I have a feeling it may go down more now :P.

EDGE very often out speeds the 3g where I am!

BTW this app works very well on edge! (yeah the video quality sucks) but it pretty darn smooth playback for edge!

An initial test showed it only consumed about 55 MB in 30 minutes on standard setting. That seems pretty reasonable. I think I might pony up the $30 when I get home and put that Sling HD to use.

Bandwidth

Karl,

Do you have evidence or data that the Major League Baseball app was "equally bandwidth-intensive"? Or are you just guessing?

Thrilled

I'm just very thrilled that all parties involved finally came to their senses and released the 3g "gimp" on this Iphone Slingplayer app finally as it always should have been.

Bandwidth.....

Anyone else see att doing all of these things because they are doing the upgrades they talked about? I've been doing some speed tests here and there, and my connection is faster than it has ever been, even compared to november.

Things are slowly getting better at my house, but at my work & school the 3g is worse than ever...

Where I live they added or upgraded the two nearest towers to 3G at one point after the new year- my T-mobile sim still picks them up on edge. Not perfect by any means, as we're in a heavily wooded area and near the end of the towers reach, but it's certainly better than before.

It's a constant battle and AT&T will need to start looking ahead to LTE deployments soon.

it's awesome....i usually get about 700-800 on the 3g here and it's fine smoothness and picture quality...

we shall see how it does on an edge...

it's awesome to be able to keep up with a game ....

Watching TV on a cell phone

Is it really THAT important to be able to watch vidoe or TV on a little tiny cell phone screen? I mean when I was a kid we had an old black and white tube type TV from the mid-sixties and it had a 14" screen. Now I watch TV on a 42" HD flat screen... I mean who the heck wants to go back to the friggin dark ages? Are your lives really that busy, must you really know everything that's going on every minute of the day that you absolutely MUST watch TV on these little devices?

I think it's rediculous.

Re: Watching TV on a cell phone

Apparently you've never been bored at an airport, you might not want to lug around a laptop. I will take my smartphone with me to airports so I can use their free wifi, and if the wait is long enough I'll actually watch some streaming media to kill time, at least until the battery runs out.

Being a diabetic, I log a lot of hours in doctors waiting rooms. Having access to my DVR via my slingbox / iphone is a wonderful way to catch up on my shows while waiting to see the doctor.

Hey..ORB..remember us??

SO, when is ORB, that I had paid $10 for, that pulled 3G streaming righ out from under me going to offer it back, especially in Canada, where last time I had checked, there is no AT&T wireless data plans?
Hello ORB? Hello? U there?
