Though as in ATT's commercial says.. " Theres no reason not to switch to FastAccess Dsl!!"" And they are right.. Assuming your covered by their service.. Rest of us have to hope cable is in the area or that the tree's are too tall/thick for wireless...

Considering there is really a whole population out there that wasn't raised on technology and/or don't need the web to live their lives happily, I could see the downgrade for light users, budget conscious or not (Hi Grandma!). Mail on dial up is adequate, informational sites (bank, government forms, etc) don't use media - Even flash sites, that know what's good for them, still include a link to skip flash.
I went on a low budget diet myself a few years ago and backed down to 'gulp' dial-up. I was rarely home as it was, and it was enough to get mail and any occasional larger downloads were multi-tasked with things like coffee fetching and sleeping. All else I downloaded at work.
I don't see this as a major trend, but it happens even with the sane.

Marketing for this is more wishful thinking, but what else have they got? A bad economy and hopes all those with copper would drop from dsl. Or, maybe it's a publicity stunt........ | | | Re: No Money Saved With Dialup That's just it.
Where dsl or cable is available you could get a bottom tier broadband along with a voip service for less than the cost of dial-up and landline. You'd have a faster connection and virtually unlimited calling for less money.

| | | said by pnh102: In most situations the combined cost of those are more than broadband. That's what eventually got me to switch. I did the math and realized the cost of my second phone line plus the cost of having dialup was a little bit more than what I'd be paying for cable. | |

| Re: No Money Saved With Dialup I was paying $67.00/Mo for POTS and DSL. I dropped the POTS, and got Dry Loop DSL for $19.99/Mo. Moved the Landline # to my CELL, which is all I ever used for voice anyway.
Much cheaper all in all! Can't see anyone going to dialup, at least not for financial reasons.

2 edits | Dialup more expensive than cable For fun, I looked into dialup prices at a non-profit school.
Dedicated phone line with local calls only: $50/month Mandatory phone line fees: ~$3/month Phone line installation: ~$100 Dialup service cost (Netzero): $10/month Dealing with Fairpoint: endless frusturation
Total: ~$63/month for dialup + ~$100 install
High speed internet by cable: $30/month for 3mbps. (Metrocast Cablevision)

| | When THEY triple the price and cap you to 60GB Such as BEll canada is doing many will see the over priced 25$ dila up as the only way to at least get on the net. THOSE rich downlaoders with the fancy pants HD hardware will jsut pay the extra and keep on doing as they do. IT affects the lower end more when they do this stupidity.
THE data is form people that are over 50 that say its too expensive NOW.

| Re: When THEY triple the price and cap you to 60GB I remember when I was stuck on dialup. Then wanting to download a half-life MOD or something. I done that kind of downloading while I was at work. At break time I would call my home land line. In order to see if it was still downloading. Cause if line was busy it was still downloading.
Cause the ISP kicked you off. If you did use the internet for 20mins.
