Sonic Sees 40% Usage Bump Thanks to 'Arrested Development'
Resurrected Series Creates Online Activity Surge
by Karl Bode 06:30PM Wednesday May 29 2013
Netflix's re-launch of the series "Arrested Development" last weekend contributed to a 40% bump in overall network usage, according to a blog post by Sonic.net. "Typically we see normal or slightly reduced Internet traffic on a holiday weekend, but the surge in broadband use on Sunday and Monday was substantial, an almost 40% bump in overall usage," says the company. "Compare Saturday the 25th with Sunday the 26th, after the Arrested release. And, strong demand continued Monday (binge viewing?), compare Monday the 27th on the right to the left-most sample, Monday the 20th."

Why ...

did they release all episodes at once? very curious.

response to the program is credited with their stock "correction".

This is how Netflix releases their series. I love the idea of it, but then I hate it after I watch them all and have to wait forever for a new season.

Because they aren't a broadcast network, and they don't have to deal with a schedule. Would you buy a season of some show on DVD/Blu-ray one episode at a time?

Netflix and Amazon do the same. Amazon just decided to develop and make available 5 new online series.

»news.yahoo.com/amazon-moving-ahe ··· 621.html

The chosen series are: "Alpha House", a political comedy starring John Goodman; "Betas", a comedy about start-up culture in Silicon Valley; "Annebots", a kids' show about robots; "Creative Galaxy", an animated art adventure series; and "Tumbleaf", another kids' show about a small blue fox named Fig.

Amazon will shoot 10 more episodes of "Alpha House" to complete the first season, which will air starting in November.

"Betas" will also get another 10 episodes, while the kids shows, "Annebots," "Creative Galaxy" and "Tumbleaf," will get 26 episodes each, Amazon said.

Re: Why ...

Thank you for the Amazon reference ... I missed that.

Maybe I am getting old ... but I still try to resist the short attention span theater approach. Having said this, I also binge to catch up (All Dexter in 2 weeks) ...

Awesome

I love that Netflix releases the entire season of their produced content. No need to be strung along for 3-5 months with one episode release every week or two. I finished season 4 of AD in two days. About 2 weeks for seasons 1-3.

Usage patterns

The graph looks flawed. I've been in this field a while, and no network usage is that predictable or steady over a week. I get that they are trying to sell a point, and it looks like a typical MRTG graph, but just seems too fake.

Re: Usage patterns

I work for a large ISP and I can assure you that graph like that can and often are very predictable. Then again, when working with 10 gig links, it takes a very substantial change in traffic to notice a difference.

Re: Usage patterns

Thats a great point. Big pipes make the scale much larger, and with a graph that small, the scale is an issue. And I noticed the actual Bps values were missing...

Without any reference points it's hard to tell if we are looking at a 10Mb circuit or a 10Gb circuit.

Investors not impressed; Netflix stock drops on poor reviews

»apnews.myway.com//article/201305 ··· F00.html

The hoopla surrounding the return of "Arrested Development" on Netflix's Internet video service has quickly dissolved into a letdown on Wall Street.

Netflix's stock fell by more than 6 percent Tuesday as investors reacted to critics' mixed reviews over the weekend of the first new "Arrested Development" episodes since Fox canceled the TV series seven years ago. The shares shed $14.55 to close at $214.19, marking the biggest one-day drop in the stock in nearly six months.

Once they saw the resurrected "Arrested Development," some influential critics panned it as a disappointment. The New York Times was particularly harsh, asserting that Netflix had "killed" the series. Variety was only slightly kinder in describing the revival as "an interesting idea that was more exciting on paper."

Negative reviews of the reborn series had Wall St negative about Netflix's prospects of cashing in on the series.

Re: Investors not impressed; Netflix stock drops on poor reviews

the fact wall street reacts to TV critics shows how flawed the system is.

If you base off network traffic it proves the critics were the ones who got it wrong.

Of course I bet a lot of this action was that automatic super computer trading that can be swung by tweets from the AP. Makes me wonder if I could get into the right twitter accounts if I could crash oil prices with the right tweet.
