Sonic.Net To Run Google's Stanford Fiber Network
Construction set to begin in early 2011
by Karl Bode Monday 13-Dec-2010 tags: business · consumers · Google
Back in February, Google announced that they'd be building a fiber to the home deployment offering speeds up to 1 Gbps to anywhere between 50,000 and 500,000 consumers in one city. Google made it clear then they weren't interested in being an ISP -- but were interested in running a wholesale operation where other ISPs offered the service, while Google collected data on next-generation content and network operations.

Click for full size
While that city hasn't been named yet, in October Google announced they'd be launching 1 Gbps service to 850 residences in Stanford. The goal of the smaller launch was to test ideas ahead of Google's planned citywide launch. Today California ISP Sonic.net announced they'll be the ones running it:

Sonic.net will manage operation of the network, provide customer service and support and perform on-site installation and repair. Sonic.net is Northern California’s leading independent Internet service provider. The Stanford trial network is completely separate from the community selection process for Google’s Fiber for Communities project, which is still ongoing. Google’s ultimate goal is to build a fiber-to-the-home network that reaches at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people, and it plans to announce its selected community or communities by the end of the year.

We predicted back in April that this could be a big win for a smaller ISP eager to make a name for itself. While Google gets a pre-launch testbed for wholesale experimentation and data collection, Sonic, who has shown interest in fiber to the home deployment will get national brand recognition from a media enamored with Google's fiber efforts. Construction of the network will begin in early 2011 according to the two companies.

Big win indeed

Small ISP partners with Google's keystone venture. That's a lot of faith invested in Sonic.

And if Sonic doesn't stumble on the execution of the project, they'll gain big in terms of whatever Google has planned next.

I'm sure dane5 See Profile, the CEO of Sonic.net, can chime in, but I doubt there will be any stumbling...

Good timing.

Just as HP announced that they think they can convince us all that we want to pay more for a lower quality connection, Google and Sonic.net announce this.

I think the public's mood and the press's airtime will reflect who is better at giving people what they want.

Re: Good timing.

This is nothing but the Google Press Machine at work again. If you really expect Google to do anything with this project I wouldn't hold my breath. They have several projects that were open to the public one was about two years ago (was mentioned on here before and all over the media) and yet have to release any winners.

Google just wants data and that's all they're gonna do. They'll get the data they need; then they'll shut down the network. The same as they did with Google 411.

Re: Good timing.

I can't see that they will shut it down. If Sonic.net does a good job (looking at their track record I don't see why not) they would likely give it to them at little to nothing when they are done with it.

Goog411 is mostly recurring expenses (bandwidth.com incoming SIP trunks, servers to run queries). Fiber, which will probably cost $700-$1000 to run per customer, is more one-time-cost-heavy...

I'm betting, like battleop, that Google will at some point hand the network over to Sonic.net, who will then do an awesome job at managing it. Private sector companies cooperating FTW.

Re: Good timing.

Hardly. Google won't give it up. It's a trial run meaning that is most likely to be killed at some point. This won't stay operating especially with Google's track record.

And Goog411 was to improve speach to type/search software they were developing. the product sucked more and more toward the end. Also the amount of $$$ they made off getting the user call data and selling it made more than what they spent. The same as Google Voice.

Re: Good timing.

You don't build a fiber network and then "kill it". You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, and just making crazy assumptions since you clearly have something against Google.

FYI, you can still text Goog411, which is far more useful than calling anyway. It's the only 411 service I ever use. Not sure what's wrong with Google Voice either, it's a pretty innovative product, that works well for my uses. Also, both of these services are FREE. I don't know why you hate a company that provides excellent, free services.

something

Something good is gonna have to happen for the consumer.. Low caps and high prices with high overages will crimple the growth of the internet and pretty much fuebar any video streaming companies..

The big players are starting to get a blood lust for our wallets.. Lets just hope they don't put in too many laws paid for from lobbying for new start ups to have a chance!

Re: something

how is this going to be good? It's a test run of the Google FTTH network and will decide what happens. As a trial- it WILL end and the fiber will be there to rot unless Sonic buys it or leases it from Google. Google just wants to collect data and that's it.

What kind of data? Be specific. Even 4K YouTube video runs over connections one twentieth of the capacity of gigabit fiber.

A trail can learn how people might actually use services have they not be capped and it be fast enough. Some would call it research. Some call that the devil.. Either way, I think of it as progress in some form or another

Re: something

Not with Google. They datamine and will track EACH and every USER and then sell the information they obtain. That is their business for advertising. They are a data mining company. You do realise how much information they hold for everyone that uses their products right? More than what you would EVER dream of having in front of you about anyone.

Re: something

They don't sell your information. They tailor search results to your interests and present ads based on relevant topics.

Who are they selling your info to?
Last time I checked 99.9% of their money came from giving businesses clicks when people go looking for stuff. It's not hard to understand.

So is the whole point of this is so Google can sniff everyone's data to figure out new ways to market advertisements to people or what?

So which ISP do you assume does NOT sniff packets? There are those very paranoid folks, not me of course, who believe that the Internet is successfully serving as wondrous intelligence (the who/what/where kind) accumulator. Kinda like cellphones.

Re: Google's Motives?

sniffing packets and housing the information for advertising related ventures and selling the data is different. Google uses the information and sells it for advertising. How do you think they make their money? They're able to tell you how many times a word is searched by saving your search, email and every other data that they get their hands on.

It's not being paranoid- its the fact of what Google does.

Quickly now

Sonic.net needs to expand (with Google's help) to other states Kick some ATT/Cable co's behind

Of course I'm sure there's some local regulations that will protect poor little "local" providers from this nasty competition. So, god forbid, customers wouldn't get a third option between cable and major telco dsl *sigh*

Android was a trial. Google TV was a trial. Chrome OS was a trial...still is, but Google is at about the point now that they were with gTV six months ago.

Believe it or not, Google has a few products (including GMail, Docs, Android, Chrome) that are out of beta at this point...

Re: Quickly now

Those are not their products. They don't make any $$$$ off providing them. They make their money off their advertising product. That is their money. They provide the free products to sell your data usage to other companies. Go advertise your website with Google adwords; they'll be able to tell you the best words to use what times they're searched and all. How? They RECORD your information from their "free" "products" just to sell your information.

So all of those Google products are not Google products at all? That's amazing. They only have an advertising product? Really?

How do you think they get people to look at their advertisements? By having people use their products such as search, android, chrome, gmail, docs, etc. Without those products, their advertising product would be useless, yes?

Re: hit the ground running

No. Google isn't in the utility industry. In the utility industry, your success is dependent on manipulating government regulation to your favor, not on what you sell, or at what price. Everyone buys water, or will have the government buy them water (welfare/section 8). Everyone buys power. etc

Not everyone buys internet. Sonic is a CLEC; they compete against AT&T and Comcast in most of their footprint. Crazy thing is, they appear to be gaining market share despite not owning the last mile...yet. Good on 'em.

correction- the Internet is NOT a utlility. It's an information service. Utlities are regulated; the Internet is NOT.
