Sony Introduces Playstation Vue TV Service: Starts At $50

Confirming recent leaks, Sony today formally took the wraps off of Playstation Vue, the company's Internet TV service. According to Sony, the platform will initially be launching for Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 users in just three cities: New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. Unlike Dish's Sling TV, Playstation Vue is intended to be a full cable replacement for cord cutters, with packages starting at $50 a month.

$50 gives you a 55 channel bundle that -- at least out of the gate -- is missing ESPN and other Disney/ABC related channels (something that's not the case with SlingTV).

The company's plans come in three flavors: Core, a $50 package with 55 channels; "Access," a $60 package that integrates regional sports channels (like Comcast SportsNet); and "Elite" a full array of 85 channels for $70.

Unlike Sling TV, Sony's licensing agreements with broadcasters allow users to store an unlimited number of recorded programs in the cloud for up to twenty-eight days. The offering currently doesn't offer access to "premium" channels like HBO or Showtime, though both will be offering their own, $15 add ons in short order.

Sony says a broadband connection of at least 10 Mbps will be needed to make the most of Playstation Vue, though like other operations Vue will deliver HD content with adaptive bitrate streaming to offer the best quality for your connection. As it stands, the service is only available on Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 consoles, though Sony says additional devices will soon be supported -- starting with iOS.

There's some additional information in the FAQ and the embedded Mashable video below gives you a good look at the GUI.

missing the point

To me I don't want 55 channels of crap I'm not interested in. I have probably 5 channels. The entire reason of cutting the cord is not to have to pay for a ton of crap you don't want. So $50 is the "base price". Add on regulatory fees, Sony Connect To Us fee, Fee for broadcasting in US... etc.
