Source: New Comcast Speeds Arrive For Most in March
Blast and Extreme in March, Performance in May
by Karl Bode Thursday 14-Feb-2013 tags: prices · competition · coverage · business · alternatives · bandwidth · cable · consumers · Comcast
A very reliable source inside Comcast tells me that the new speeds being seen by many of our users in the Northeast should be appearing for the rest of you in March. Last summer an anonymous tipster sent a leaked screenshot of what would ultimately be Comcast's new speed offerings.

The source informs me that those speeds will be finally arriving for many from March to May but with a few tweaks -- like the fact they'll be around $2 higher for most of you than what was suggested in the previous leak. The changes:

• Comcast's Blast tier is going from 25/4 Mbps to 50/10 Mbps this Spring (March, for many of you).

• Comcast's Extreme tier will be going from 50/10 Mbps to 105/20 (Again, likely in March)

• Comcast's Performance tier will be going from 12/2 Mbps to 25/4 Mbps (May 2013)

Users in the Northeast who've already seen the Performance speed increase say they're getting the promised speeds, but without PowerBoost. Powerboost, which provides an extra jolt of speed at the start of a download, used to be a handy way for cable operators to game speed tests and thrill users, but with speeds getting ever faster, its relevance (at least on the downstream side) has lessened.

"many of you"

Doesnt seem like its going to be a national thing from the phrase "many of you" (ie, not "all of you"). Any idea which area might get excluded?

The 25/4 speed has been the normal Performance/Normal with PowerBoost tier speed for a few years in South Florida, so I'm sad to say but you didn't get any speed increase. You'll see those actual speeds without PowerBoost after the update and if they keep PowerBoost you should see like 35/8.

I just got this notice in South Florida on my cable box messages:

"Exciting News: Increased speeds on the way! XFINITY will soon be increasing internet speeds on its most popular plan and doubling two of its fastest. That's right - The fastest internet and fastest in-home Wi-Fi is about to get even faster."

I just checked and no increase yet. I'm on the Ultra/Blast! tier and get about 36MB Down and 7MB Up. I think that is with PowerBoost enabled. I'm excited for the 50MB upgrade! Anyone get it yet or gotten a better time-frame or notice? I think we should see it on March 1st or soon after?

Only a couple of people got the Performance tier increase and it was 22/4 I believe without PB.

Same here on the confusion....if you're already on the Blast 50/10 plan where's the upgrade? I guess no upgrade. I'm not complaining just questioning.

I think the point is that the rest of the areas will get speeds equalized to that of the northeast. Being that you are already in the northeast, yeah I guess no upgrade.

Have you powered off and on your cable modem? And is it docsis3. You have to do both to see if you have the new speeds and no powerboost.

Here in my part of CT it is still 16/2 with PB making it show 25/4 on a normal speedtest. I have re-booted within the last day.

What's the speed limit if it's not a Docsis 3 modem? It would be great if they told us this. So I could have more than 2X my speed but need to upgrade the modem?

Theoretically 38mbps, but they probably won't let you get anywhere near that on a D2 modem, as you'd be saturating a whole channel.

Everything above performance requries a D3 modem. If you have blast and not getting the speeds, call and make sure the modem is provisioned with the correct bootfile. Speak to tech support ONLY!

I've become very suspicious of those shape detectors... I'm 100% sure my ISP has traffic shaping, but I've never had it detected by any of the tests I've seen online.

Here's how my ISP does it:

It slows down all transfers to a crawl to other users of any other ISP.
It doesn't slow the traffic down within my same ISP or any server that isn't a client of a big ISP.
As if to trying to prevent users from setting up servers for the public. (after all, only those domains are bound to have many users)
I'm 100% sure it is in fact traffic shaping, because all it takes for me to get around that speed cap to other ISPs is to turn on my VPN.

Why not? Yes, PB "fools" standard speed tests, but that is not at all limited to Comcast's speed test.

Speakeasy, Speedtest.net, and Comcast speed test all give me the same results within a very narrow range...not enough to quibble over.

No, the 24/2.5 was PowerBoost, but it would kick in over and over again if you had multiple things using bandwidth, so it felt much more like a 24/2.5 connection than an 8/1 connection.

We're already seeing price increases after the small bumps we've recently gotten with the exception of those locked into a contract. Though, when the Business class contracts autorenew, the price will probably increase.

@cox.net

I can't believe this

While other provides double their speeds cox communications still have their expensive service and there's no one else to turn. This my area they went up in their speed about 6mb! And they went up price increase about $3.00 for this some places more.
I can understand if cox would offer better services and speeds for this price increase but they don't,
Alot of people in my area we're getting sick of them.

Not sure about 50/10, but they did bump the 22/5 people to 27/7 and the 12/2 people to 17/3. So perhaps a 50/10 bump is forthcoming?

Still have (limited now) powerboost on 27/7, but I think that's going away soon.

I have the 16/2 tier on Business class and it was bumped up to the 22/4 speeds which I can confirm just south of Chicago. I'm not sure about the other speeds.

AnonME

@comcastbusiness.net
My 25/5 business service already got the bump to 27/7 (actually a bit better than that) here in NH.

BUT, I also noticed on the Comcast.com site, they also bumped the pricing up an additional $10/month for new customers. So far, my bill hasn't changed and I'm not under contract. Guess they decided the extra 15 cents/month that this costs them in bandwidth would justify the extra $10/month in income.

I'm in the northeast

I already have the upgrade

50/10 works fine for me. I tried 105/20 but it did not make a big difference.

The 50/10 is handy for system updates and app downloads. Other than that, I usually watch YouTube videos, surf the web, use Facebook/Twitter, DSLR, and e-mail. Many webpages do warrant a fast connection, especially if they are loaded with flash or other animations.

Some of the Mac System updates can be well over a gigabyte so the fast connection is handy. And when Apple releases a new version of MacOS X, you are talking 4-5 GB per computer and I have three Macs that can run the newer versions of MacOS X. I have three Intel based Macs and the older iBook (from 2003) has a PowerPC processor. The iBook is handy for running OS 9 apps from the good old days since it can run both OS 9 and older OS X apps. Most of my computing is on the iDevices (iPads and iPhone). iOS updates can be time consuming on a slow connection as well and I generally do App updates on the Comcast connection as opposed to the VZW 4G connection due to caps.

West coast this time?

I am on the "grandfathered" Ultra tier (30/8 with boost) and on the west coast. I wonder if I will be bumped to 50/10 with a price "decrease" since I am paying a $10 "fee" for being on the Ultra tier.

What happened to those of you on the east coast that had the "Ultra" tier? Did you get the speed bump and what happened to your bill?

Speed Bumbs are nothing when compared to reliability

I think my title sums it up pretty well. Reliability as in up time, consistent performance, no CMT communication issues, T3 time-out, no cycled periods of heavy packets losses and/or slow speeds, Decreased latency vs increased...
I would much rather see them fix what they have across the board than to play the placebo mind/marketing game.

"Speeds as Advertised"

Do you really think anyone ever gets the advertised rates? There are too many variables that take place to guaranteeing speeds. For example, how many to a node, what bandwidth is being used by users of the node, how much total bandwidth that is available for the area, congestion, and the route on the internet.

This is why most of you do not get as advertised. What can you do? Nothing really, we are in the stone age when it comes to speed in this country where as everywhere else has much faster speeds for much less in USD. I wish we'd get caught up with the rest of the western world.

Comcast territory vs acquired territory

Has anyone compared the upgrade schedules against the original Comcast and the acquired areas?
I'm in a section of Boca Raton FL that used to be Adelphia, and is usually the last to be upgraded due to the old infrastructure.
I'd have thought we'd have been upgraded first since there are some very big money neighborhoods here, but of course I don't know the cost to migrate the head end.
