And did anyone ever actually believe that spammers are just honest businessmen trying to make a living online?
I think I'm gonna add links to my sigs on other forums to point to free antivirus software. If more people would run current AV software, we could start to make a dent in this scourge. Does anyone know of a good Web site that provides basic information on Internet security in terms that the average noob can understand?

Any anti-spam method that has a chance of working basically is at risk of attack by spammers who see it as a threat to their livelihoods. Make an effective anti-spam tool any idiot can use, and you've just cut out a good chunk of their market - idiots.
Spammers are like the RIAA, MPAA and like groups. When something threatens their long-established way of doing things, they fight back. Alas, the RIAA and MPAA at least are legal entities, and thus have a variety of methods to do their takedowns. Spammers, well, they don't want to go to court so much for their methods can be exposed and thus liable for whatever happens (e.g., if it's a US based spammer admitting CAN-SPAM violations in court, well, that testimony is gold for the followup lawsuit).

| Re: blue security Disregarding the value of someone's work, whenever I purchase music, video, etc., I'd like to be able to play it in all media devices that I own. If I download the music legitimately, I cannot copy it to my ipod if it wasn't through itunes. I cannot copy it to my rio if it *was* through itunes. If these guys had their way, I'd have to purchase a copy for each possible device I intended to listen to it on.
Also: Artists get very little compensation(unless you're a huge huge huge hit), so, disregarding all of the above, that's very important. Plus, you don't get proper compensation when a new technology comes out: if your company sells something that isn't in your contract, you never see a penny of it.

| make it cost more some isps are just not proactive about fighting spam and let this crap happen.. I bet co-opted botnets chew up more aggregate bandwidth than p2p traffic sometimes as a matter of PEAK usage.. this needs to stop-- so EDUCATE the subscribers to FIX the leaky faucets of co-opted machines!!! Bastards will have to find other ways to spew their sh*t across the net.. companies that don't fight this should be FORCED out of business! Their cost of doing business should be similar to filling up one's gas tank these days, that is VERY EXPENSIVE!! (and dont tell me the urban legend about adjusted for inflation crap!!) | |

| Not just ISP's but also mailhosts
many of them have no restrictions on how much e-mail is sent out, very few do. If more mail server were a little more proactive about the spam problem, we'd have less of a problem. Those that wanted to run spam would have to be restricted to running their own servers... of course that's the part where the ISP's come in.
