Mountain View testbed results mixed
(old news - 06:31PM Monday Nov 06 2006)
tags: business · wireless
Users over at the Google Message Boards give rather mixed opinions on the free Wi-Fi service the search giant is offering residents of Mountain View, California (the site of the new Google headquarters). 380 Wi-Fi nodes placed on utility poles around the city offer users downstream speeds between 855kbps and 1113kbps, and upstream speeds ranging from 144kbps to 986kbps. The major complaint thus far seems to be spotty coverage (you can see their coverage map here).

Google responds to complaints in the thread, noting that the service was never intended to work indoors without the use of a high-powered WiFi modem. "We are in the process of installing additional nodes, which will improve our coverage and reliability across the network," a Google technician posts to the forum. "We have also been visiting individual apartment complexes to discuss the possibility of installing a node on their premises."

Same as MetroFi

Personally, all these WiFi sucks big time the moment you try to stream video or download something.

Whoa

Those people sure complain a lot for something that is free.

.. and what's the whole argument about signal strength in that thread? It didn't really feel like anyone in that thread knew what they were talking about regarding RF or FCC regulations.

Re: Whoa

Just because it's free you cant complain?

They have no accountability?

Re: Whoa

They should demand their money back too. Or better yet, get as many people to pay their next bill late. That will make them sit up and take notice!

They will be when they open shop in San Francisco. If they can't provide Mt. View with decent service, they'll have fun in San Francisco.

Re: Whoa

yeah, Mountain view is fairly flat... they just have the sites too far apart for decent use.
I used MetroFi when I was in Sunnyvale, and wasn't impressed, but then again it was ad driven, proxied and not as reliable as dialup.

no...muni is muni provided...muni assets, muni employees, muni billed, etc....

public/private venture is different. Leasing city poles/r.o.w. does not make one a muni provider.

MetroFi is not muni wifi. Earthlink in Philly is not muni-fi. Utopia in Utah is not muni broadband really as they can't provide any retail services. Muni infrastructure owner yes, but not muni broadband. Want examples of the real deal, try Thomasville, GA or Kutztown, PA.

This is just a continuing misnomer pushed by an uneducated press. This is as backwards as the FCC calling everything over 200k "broadband."

When you pay money for something, you complain.

When you get something for free, you comment or suggest.

There is accountability in both situations, but the tone is much different.

LMAO! Leave it to the libs in the bay area to complain about a free service. Don't you realize they are entitled to trouble free internet service? This sounds like a perfect situation for a class action lawsuit led by the ACLU to sue the city for free modems.

City-wide WiFi limitations are becoming obvious

All the hype about city after city rolling out citywide WiFi has often failed to acknowledge the significant limitations of these services. Even when rolled out by well funded organizations and even when well planned, these roll outs have serious coverage and speed limitations. And they also fail to give access to residents inside buildings without additional expenditures by residents themselves.

And issues about the costs of ongoing maintenance and support have been minimally evaluated. All in all, the reality of this type of wireless infrastructure has severely underperformed the promises.

Gimme a break lol It is free man, if I could get this service for free, I would not have any issue spending 200 dollars up front on a WiFi antenna to bring it in my house.

It's a *FREE* WiFi Service after all... You DO still have the option to *PAY* for Dial-Up, or perhaps DSL or Cable service, if that's available... Otherwise, spending about $50 for a "Cantenna" »www.cantenna.com/ may be all that you would need... And, If you're a "Do-It-Yourself" type, you could even BUILD one, for just a couple of bucks... »www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cante···wto.html

When you get phone service, the phone company isn't responsible for giving you a phone.

The theory behind all this is fine, its today's user that expects everything to be hand delivered and perfectly functional with absolutely no cost.

If I don't know how to do something, I either learn how to do myself it or pay someone who does. I don't cry about how someone should be doing it for me for free.

I have the High Power modem....

I have the Buffalo high power ethernet converter that they mention and live in Mountain View, right on the Los Altos border. However, rarely am I able to receive the GoogleWiFi signal. It pops up once in a while but is gone really fast. I would love to see more nodes.

Yes, I am in the coverage map. The actual google node is about 500 feet from my house.

As the map says
"If you live in an area without coverage and you are interested in the possibility of hosting a Google WiFi node on your property, please email us at mvwifi-support@google.com. "
Might be worth writing to see what their terms are (length of commitment, compensation for the property owner (power cost?, supplied/extra "privite" bandwidth?,, ???)
I'm not quite clear if each node is provisioned via fiber/cable/wire, or if this is totally a mesh network relaying from AP to AP

I think it is wireless node to node. This is what is on my street.

Re: I have the High Power modem....

Got a reply and they are willing to install with no charge except for paying for electricity. They say it the power of a 100 Watt light bulb, weighs very little and is 18 inches high with 2 antennas.

Build it yourself

Wow.. why not get a real wifi antenna the modem they suggest is minor to what you can use if you really want to receive the signal. Oh! and once you use a real high powered antenna why not add a cheap Linksys router on your connection to them and repeat the signal even further for others... »www.pacwireless.com/

What an opportunity for this region if the people help build it out... after all whats it cost after your initial investment, free internet x12 months =lets see no brainer..

I have considered doing this. Most of the people around me are retired and do have computers but have little tech savvy but would benefit.
