Sprint Ads Attack Verizon, AT&T Shared Data Plans
'Say No to Sharing' and 'Say Yes to Sprint'
by Karl Bode Friday 31-Aug-2012 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · consumers · wireless
Sprint recently came out swinging against AT&T and Verizon's new shared data plans, launching a new website that claimed the plans simply cause headaches and that users would save money with Sprint unlimited data (which may or may not be true depending on your household/family data usage). Now the company is launching a new ad campaign with a tagline of "say no to sharing, say yes to Sprint." "Data usage continues to increase and consumers value Truly Unlimited data because it’s simple and straightforward," says Sprint. "This campaign is designed to eliminate the confusion and skepticism about who offers Truly Unlimited data plans without the costly catch of sharing metered data attached," insists the company. You can see one of the new ads here. Think they're effective?

So true if they didnt charge for premium internet which in most places it doesnt exist i'd actually be saving money. But As of last week the lost a customer in me.

i'll pay the same amount over at ATT and actually be able to use my phone as intended.

Eh, even with the $10/mo. surcharge (which is simply a way for them to advertise unlimited data for $70/mo.), you're still getting unlimited data for no more than limited data with VZ, and less than for what limited data with "AT&T" would cost.

The bigger problems with Sprint, for me, are: 1. Data coverage. By all accounts it... well, it sucks, I'm told. I know that over by the S.E. end of the state, next to the lakes, my friends do well with VZ, but my phone's always in-and-out of service (on voice). 2. Phone selection. Sprint's is limited. I really wanted a virtual-keyboard-only Motorola phone. (They're more robust than others.) Sprint doesn't have such a thing any more. That, alone, may push me over to VZ, after 13 years with Sprint.

But then again you get what you pay for.. crap. I have moved services and checked my usuage over with sprint thru last yr and havent gone anywhere past 4 gigs in 2 yrs. I'd say very easily I am in a good place with the plan I am under.

It's $10 with unlimited messaging per Device Eligibility per *147886. And why are we discussing myCSP at home?

Yes, I would not mind their "Premium Data Charge" if it was truly a "Premium" experience. As it is, I am lucky to get dialup speeds with them when I can connect and not get a failure message. My total data usage this billing cycle is 26MB. Last month was 17MB.

The plans actually do save money if you text and talk a lot.

I still have my grandfathered verizon 20 gb plan (for the cost of 10 gb).

Whether you save or don't depends on a lot of factors and really it's an individual things. So no one can say it saves or doesn't save for anyone else but them. And I suspect a lot of people saying it doesn't save haven't even done the math and have just regurgitated what they were told.

for example we have 4 smartphones 700 minutes( use less than 200 ) unlimited texting and four 2GB data plans

Old pricing $240

New pricing with 8 GB shared $250.

Now it seems we'd pay $10 a month more BUT we uses less than 4 GB a month anyways. Last month used under 2 GB total in fact. If we switch to the 4 GB package we'd save $10 a month.

Now I think a lot of people are the same way but they have this mindset "Well I have 2 GB now so I need 2 GB on the Share Everything plan". Even though they don't ever come close to using 2 GB. It's almost as if having a plan that offers under 2 GB per person is wrong to them. 2 GB was just an arbitrary number to begin with.

Re: The plans actually do save money if you text and talk a lot.

Not confused, I did the math and it would cost me almost 25% more a month to switch from my unlimited plan with verizon to the share plan. Thats not to say it is more for everyone cause it isn't. My son will actually pay less than he pays now on his phone when he upgrades. Like you said, it all depends on what each person or family has now and which plan they intend to switch too and how many phones they have or are going to add.

The great thing about Sprint unlimited data, is just how little of it you'll be able to use.

Slightly off topic but its for everyone out there who has never tried Sprint. Many carriers have very confusing bills including some Ive seen with surcharges nearing 20% of the bill. NYC for example. Check out this Bill I have from sprint. This is the Everything data 450 which includes calling to any cell phone on any carrier unlimited. Look how plain and simple the bill is. No trickery of renaming charges to hide fees. There is another page I have not uploaded which explains the charges and they go on to admit upfront the surcharges are to recover costs imposed upon them by government regulations. I don't think any of the other carriers are this up front.

How much would this cost at Verizon or AT&T? Also Sprint's entire network will have LTE by the end of next year.

Side note. My plan is still better than most out there because I actually have 750 landline minutes for the price of the 450. So basically unlimited everything for my usage.

lol I lost faith in sprint along time ago... In flat terran they will do well with LTE... I don't see them being able to provide that same network of LTE in my area.

Why is 3G and 4G split out? I have unlimited with Verizon and it's just unlimited. It doesn't matter whether it's 3G or 4G. Although it's probably 4G at least 90% of time for me. Although I pay $78 after taxes for unlimited data and text and 450 minutes. But I also use five numbers that don't count against my minutes so in a typical month I rarely even use 100 out of the allotted 450 minutes. Since those five numbers are unlimited talk time.

Coverage...coverage....coverage...

When TMo and Sproostgin wants to expand and have real coverage let me know... till then.... VZW!

No I think their new plan sucks!

I have unlimited and I will keep it till they pry it away, which I expect soon to pay for all the isheep and the itoys...

I purchased my own samsung Stratosphere and changed out my device online no muss no fuss and kept my data plan... got screwed out of my last NE2 discount because of it since the isheep cost us that too!

I normally didn't use the upgrades in the past, but I for $50 for a phone that was cheaper than I could get it on Ebay for that upgrade last time. I got this one for about what I would pay or a little more... its the principle of it though....

The device regardless of the plan and cheapness of that plan mean nothing if I can't use it when I need it... and sproostgin has been measured, weighed and found wanting.

The ad(s) are worthless... sprosstgin's I had not seen... but I skip most and most of my watching has no ads since they are convienently removed by the sources.

I watch TMo's only for Carly (FEED HER!) and the singer in the Xmas one last year! HOT REDHEAD!

When some one wants to step up with an reliable network with equal coverage, let me know.

Right....By the the way, rec9140, how are those lawsuits from VZW and SouthernLinc for Sprint deploying CDMA (and eventually LTE) on SMR that you promised coming along?

lol, no it was a ridiculous idea and everyone with common sense told you as much. It's hilarious how you never came back to face the music after you put forth all of these grandiose proclamations that lawsuits were imminent and, of course, not a single lawsuit materialized. Kinda cowardly actually, rec9140...

I am the same way. I would love to switch to Virgin Mobile or Boost but I am probably not going to because I have heard horror stories from people in my area. It's either I am going to buy a a device (iPhone 5 or a S III) on eBay and use it with my unlimited data plan with Verizon or do the same with an AT&T phone and do Net10.

Sprint's coverage isn't very spectacular around here, but speeds at any time with a good signal weren't any better than dial-up either.

consensus @ $70?

It seems that other tiered prepaid companies are saying the same thing.. unlimited & unthrottled service should end up @ $70 a month (unlimited 4g/lte).. Metro Pcs, Tmobile, Net10/Straight talk..

Otherwise it's capped, and/or throttled under differenct FAP policies so that the unlimited folk can fatten the cellco's bottom line. I still say this should be $40 - $50 prepay option inclusive of taxes & fees, not $70.

Why haven't these companies tiered wireless similarly the way they do wireline? It seems that certain applications would be enabled by faster tiers which consumers would pay more for..
$25 - $30 for upto 3 megabits. $40 - $45 for 6 megabits. and $60 - $70 for upto 20 megabits (all assuming the node isn't overloaded, at which you can expect a 10% throttle).

AT&T and Verizon don't want to play and seek to duopolize the market, while smaller players fumble putting cell towers WHERE PEOPLE NEED THEM.. Nationwide, there's probably at least a dozen cell antennas for every person alive in the USA.. This how big Sprint, Metro, Tmobile and the others have to build in order to catch up to the incumbent Ma Cells.

Teenagers

The problem for me with the family share plans is that I have a teenage boy on my service and unlimited minutes doesn't matter, unlimited texts are a good thing but limited data is a real problem. I have to use the navigation features of my phone with my job which uses data and my son uses alot of data so we would have to get one of the higher tiered plans and that is where the costs really go up over the current unlimited data plans. For thos that can have 3 or 4 devices connected and get away with 2 or 4 GB per month then these plans are ok I guess, but when you have to use one of the higher plans then the price differance really jumps. And before anyone yells buy a GPS, I can't afford one atm for one and the google map navigation application is way more dependable in the rural areas where I run for another.

I have 2 teenagers on smart phones and my wife and I.. thru the past yr on spring we haven;t gone over 4 gigs as a family..

I just thru us on ATT on the 10 gig plan to give me some buffer, yes it cost me about 13 bucks more, but the service works. I guess the advantage here in San Diego is that ATT has alot of hot spots and honestly what works for you is what works for you. I am just fed up with Sprint and the lack of network coverage in my area.

Which is also nice is the company I work for is going back to Verizon from ATT. Coverage with sprint ha sbeen a headache. Can't wait for the move.

Google maps has a feature where you can download the maps of an area. So if you do that you wouldn't be using any data. The GPS doesn't use data. Only the mapping aps do.

Also teach your teenager to use Wi-Fi when's it's available to him.
