Latest smartphone can't take full EVDO advantage (yet)
(old news - 04:05PM Tuesday Jun 19 2007)
tags: coverage · business · wireless · hardware · bandwidth
Sprint today announced that their EVDO Revision A broadband technology now reaches 203 million users. They have also announced that they've extended the window for new customers to make changes to their wireless plan to six months after purchase. On Monday, the company unveiled the HTC Mogul 6800 ($399 with a two-year contract), which actually only supports EVDO Revision 0 speeds (700kbps/70kbps), though a Revision A (800kbps/400kbps) update is coming later this year.

Bigger stuff coming later

"High Power PTT" combined services is coming out this fall which fully leverages the merger with Nextel. Those appear to be the phones to look out for from Sprint.

Wrong. This is the successor to the PPC-6700 (which I currently have), and it is in fact equipped with a full QWERTY slideout keypad. The only thing it really is missing is a little bulk and the annoying antenna stub.

Overall I'd say it's a pretty sharp looking phone; I'm considering purchasing one myself, but I'm going to wait until EVDO Rev A. is deployed here before shopping around.

Hahah, no, not that I'm aware of. There's probably a $200 attachment in the works though...

Do you think it's a firmware or hardware issue which is preventing the release of a EVDO Rev. A enabled phone right now?

Re: Besides EVDO A, it's also missing a

The Rev.A is probably bigger in size and gives out more heat. I know my SCP-8400 EV-DO Rev.0 gets hot and the battery dies in 2 hours of constant operation of the EV-DO network which could be preventing the release of Rev.A at this point in time.

Upgradeable via firmware, it says so right on the Sprint website.

Per a Sprint eng I had a chance to chat with (at Sprint's HQ, no less) its more of a device compat issue than anything. They're pushing for data cards and software development before phones, as 99% of phone users won't ever notice Rev 0 vs Rev A.

I was told to not hold my breath until the end of the year, unofficially of course.

Many do get over 2Mbps with RevA but it's the exception, not the norm. Check out evdomaps.com and sort by fastest downloads.

Question about EVDO

Does anyone know where you can check your phone to see what rev it supports? I use evdo through my phone and get only 1mbit / 128. Supposedly I am in REV A but maybe im not? Either that or my phone is capped at REV 0 speeds.....

It is Rev 0. There are no phones that support Rev a right now.

How come no phones support Rev A? Will there be a firmware update you think or no? If you can direct me to a link about the speeds of spring phones, id appreciate.

The phone talked about in the article above has Rev A capability. The firmware is just not ready for it yet. Rev a will become unlocked with a firmware update down the road. But as of right now if your phone is powervision capable it is Rev 0.

Rev A is hardware dependent. It looks like this new phone has RevA hardware, but will receive the firmware to utilize it in the future. All phones (w/ EVDO) prior to this one have Rev0 hardware, meaning that they will never be able to take advantage of RevA.

Re: No Sprint coverage in my area

Rev A will mean more to the PDA crowd than the flip phone people until HSPTT come out. Then it will be utilized by everybody.

Download Speeds for Rev 0 and Rev are virtually the same. Its the upload that is different. I average about 1MEG - 1.5 MEG download with my connection card. I saw no difference when I was upgraded to Rev A in terms of download and I use it everyday.

Re: No Sprint coverage in my area

agreed on the PDA v/s flip phone but who REALLY wants or can use internet access on a flip phone that most do WAP and not full HTML? I tried using the net on a flip phone at one time and quickly gave up and went back to a PDA. I also have the 6700 and love mine completely. This is my 3rd PDA phone. Although I would certainly like the make the 6800 my 4th unit.
