Sprint Epic 4G Reviews Start Rolling In
Tops HTC EVO with better screen, battery
by Karl Bode Monday 16-Aug-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Last week Sprint announced that their second 4G phone, the Samsung Epic 4G, will be launching August 31 for $250 after a $100 rebate and with a Sprint two-year contract. Now the reviews have started to roll in, Gizmodo calling it the best 4G phone available, which isn't saying all that much -- given there's only two. But according to the gadget blog, the device does wind up topping the popular HTC EVO, in part due to a more visible screen and slightly improved battery performance. Reviews over at CNET and Engadget also seem largely positive.

happy with my Evo

I've seen the samsungs with these displays and it's not so great in sunlight (I know they said the super AMOLED is better) but that and the color seems a bit un-natural.

Re: happy with my Evo

i disagree.
while amoled is totally useless in direct sunlight and plain old TN panels in all other phones are maybe 10% visible, superamoled are ~80% visible in direct sunlight. it is on par with IPS panels used on iphone4 and other devices.

Options are good overall. I prefer EVO's large screen. Others want physical board. Epic also supposed to have faster graphics, especially for gaming. Most everyone wins. No choices in the iPhone world.

Nah, there wouldn't be any bias on a site called Windows Mobile Power Users when it comes to an Android device. Not in a million years. Not even when their review contradicts most

I don't know about the AMOLED, but I am also very happy with my EVO. Mainly due to the large screen and HTC Sense UI.

There's a third party app launcher that is similar to HTC Sense for those who prefer Sense. Haven't tried it since I have Sense.

Sense is much more than a simple launcher. Having used the stock Android OS on a Droid, Sense "completes" the OS so to speak.

I have the Moment, and TouchWiz doesn't come on it. Just the stock Android interface.

Maybe the Intercept does, but the Moment as it ships from Sprint, does not.

That's nice, considering the fact that the Moment runs Stock Android. Unless your friend installed one of the ported versions of Touchwiz.

I agree, and frankly I don't get Gizmodo's constant bashing of the battery and the size.

You know what you're getting into with it in terms of size. And on the battery....I charge mine daily overnight. If you use it every waking moment then yea it won't probably last depending on the use.

But heck, I've had my EVO go 20 hrs. Sure the radios were turned off for about 4 hrs of that but still...and I was traveling which means I use it even more than I do on a normal day.

Re: happy with my Evo

I turn off gps, wifi, bt, all of it. Only leave the phone on and only allow a few apps to auto update. If I don't touch my phone for anything other than a few calls, it will last 10+ easy. (I just can't seem to leave it alone that long is the problem.)

the super amoled is better on all counts except sunlight where it is equal. it has brighter colors, better angle view, and not for nothing will give much more battery life fore Epic over Evo as they start with same battery mAh. The Epics CPU is the same speed and uses much less power as well. Then you have the vastly better GPU on the epic.

congrats on your EVO, it s a nice phone, but of the many huge advantages of super amoled over tft, you picked the one criteria where they are merely equal, use in direct sunlight.

I think you're just used to the washed-out look of LCD's. And i'm sure being an Evo owner, you're not biased at all. Personally, I've owned both, and can't say I will ever have the desire to go back to an LCD based device.

Why would anyone put out 350$

Why would anyone put out $350 (then wait for the rebate) for a device when there will be ten more released by the years end - each "better" than the last....

I wonder what the resale value will be on this one in a year

following that logic you will wait indefinitely wait for something better to comeout.
plus it won't cost $350 if you shop around. by comparison driod2 directly from vz cost $300($200 after $100 rebate), but letstalk.com has it for $75 w/o mailin rebates. i'm sure they'll have Epic4g for $100 w/o rebates too.

they might have phone w/o contracts, but most discounts go only with contract.
you get discounts because carrier recoup their costs w/ your monthly fees.
w/o those fees they have no incentive to discount phones.

Each Better? Maybe, maybe not.

It depends on whether Phone7 is being forced fed to us yet. I can't remember the timetable. My only interest in Phone7 is to avoid it.

If there's a WinMo 6.5 device+4g coming down the pipe, I'd pick that first. Once unlocked, those things are configurable as heck; with lots of pre-packed firmwares choices being distributed.

I'm opting to let the Android market become a little more developed before I'll jump into it. And Android is where I'll eventually end up; because there won't be any other choices for folks who resent being owned and manipulated by Big TelPhone.

Percentage wise; better than a new car.

I would never pay for a winmo phone. The android is just so much better. (right now using a palm pro with 6.5.3). The windows platform is just stagnant. It really isn't a smartphone compared to iPhone or Android.

Yea, I should prepend any 4G comments I make with "As Soon as they deliver 4G to my market,".

So far Sprint/Clearwire has announced Miami and delivered Jacksonville. Those cities are 200-300 miles away from my Tampa market. We're not on any WiMax rollout map yet.

However, my Sprint EVDO is pretty solid here; I can hold out for some time.

They just updated the review to clarify the bug doesn't exist!!!

[Update: We just spoke with Samsung, who told us that Google is now requiring that the "use wireless networks" setting for location-based services be turned off by default in Android devices -- in other words, no AGPS unless you manually enable it. Sure enough, we went into Settings, found that it was disabled on the Epic, turned it on, and we were good to go. No GPS bug!]

Re: What about GPS

makes no sense since Samsung announced they are working on a bug fix for the other Galaxies' GPS. I think it is worrisome that Samsung PR has been spinning that a bug fix is coming, inf act promising to have it by September, when they are claiming google maps requires it off by default, which is bizarre since the dozens of other GPS location applications -- for example Sprint Nav -- have no such requirement -- and are harmed in acquisition speed by any such requirement.

And how is it that here are Moto and HTC Androids just coming out that do not have aGPS network Aquitaine of GPS assistance off by default?

Sounds fishy, and if accurate, even worse a permanent problem unique to samsung which they just said last week they would fix!

Re: What about GPS

It's really not that complicated.

Part of samsung's problem has come from their aGPS server being improperly configured, and their firmware incorrectly managing that.

Google's solution could be because of a privacy settlement/issue/requirement. Alternatively, it could be to mitigate future issues of improperly configured 3rd party servers that make basic Andoid functions not work properly.

Screen

I'm surprised the reviewers aren't picking up on how bad both AMOLED and S-AMOLED screens look. Up close, you see a screen door dot pattern...reminds me of looking at a plasma up close. And it's not a resolution issue as the iphone 4, droid, etc. don't exhibit this with similar resolutions. Also see tons of dithering, oversaturated colors...and the thing that REALLY drives me crazy is how bad the grayscale ramps are. Basically unless you show 100% white or black everything has a color to it. Example, when viewing a webpage and letting the screen dim, everything all of the sudden has a color to it, even the white.

I thought it was just my N1, but I played around with the Galaxy S and while it's better, the screen still looks awful to me. I like solid black levels as much as the next guy, but AMOLED seems to be too much of a trade off.

I wish it wasn't a Samsung

I really like Hummingbird but 2 things stop me from considering Samsung.

1. Their poor track record at supporting/releasing updates for their existing phones (even b4 their android models). My brother is on its 5th Moment because of the GPS issue. And he is really irritated that Samsung is not releasing a Froyo update for it, a phone that's not even a year old and its perfectly capable of running it. Prior to this the WinMo based ones I had were often left in 'update limbo' by Samsung who instead would release a V2 version of the same model and expected you to 'upgrade' to it rather than fixing their original release.

Which brings me to:

2. Samsung by far seems to release new phone models far too frequently, which would be ok except it introduces problem #1, were perfectly capable phones are left in update limbo.

Nice featureset, but it is a Samsung

I'm definitely considering it. The problem is that I've had Samsungs in the past, many quite feature-packed for their time, but they couldn't take much abuse. Sometimes they just quit working for no apparent reason. I just don't trust Samsung like I trust HTC, and in the old days, Sanyo.

What's the last samsung model you had? I haven't had any issues with mine and this is going back to 1998 when I had that super huge Samsung phone brick from Sprint with the extended battery.

I went with the Evo because of the screen size and no keyboard.
