Sprint Hemorrhaging Wireless Subscribers
Loses more than a million subscribers last quarter...
With the exception of the marketing saps who came up with the soon-to-be-scrapped Xohm brand, people are excited about Sprint's new WiMax joint venture. But don't forget that Sprint has other problems to worry about. Last quarter, Verizon added 1.5 million wireless customers to give them 67.2 million. AT&T? They added 1.3 million subscribers for a grand total of 71.4 million users. Sprint? Not so much. The company's first quarter earnings indicate Sprint lost 1.09 million wireless customers on the quarter, most of whom fled the customer service armageddon created when Sprint tried to fuse with Nextel.

I'll say they have problems

For the quarter, total wireless subscribers declined by 1.09 million due to losses of 1.07 million post-paid subscribers and 543,000 traditional prepaid users, partially offset by gains of 343,000 Boost Unlimited and 183,000 wholesale and affiliate subscribers.
Dump Nextel and sell out the rest to Deutche Telekom(T-Mobile).

With the Sanyo Pro series phones coming out with Qchat, the end of Nextel is near.

I can see iDEN as a major improvement across the board but only after it's overall security is enhanced and provide backward compatibility. More than likely we might be seeing more Motorola radios in the comm shop sooner rather than later.

the QChat system was suppose to be out long before now. That's one reason i left them. They keep saying "oh the software update is coming, it will be out in X amount of days or months" that comes and goes and still QChat is not out yet.

That phone will be lucky if it even hits the limited market release.

And sell the iDEN network to the government or to Cyren Call for a National Emergency Services Network.

What's the purpose in selling Nextel or sprint to T-mobile .

T-mobile uses GSM not CDMA or iDEN(T) technology.

T-mobile will end up like Sprint/nextel.

What a waste of time.

Re: I'll say they have problems

They wouldn't have to try and merge the companies together all at once like Spent tired to. T-Mobile could use the towers that Spent-Nextel own to expand their coverage area. And slowly start shutting down the network over a course of a few years and migrate everyone over to T-Mobile. If anyone renews their contract for what ever reason- they'd change to T-Mobile and also have the option to change to TM if they wanted to but NOT have the option to migrate over to Sprint. Wouldn't be hard. Spent should have done that instead of giving customers the option to go from Sprint to Nextel when they knew that the customers would have to change back to Sprint's CDMA network anyway.

Would have just made more sense to only allow customers to migrate from the "purchased" network to the already existing network.

TM could also offer special pricing for contract Spent customers. Extend the contract for 2 years and get what ever phones for $XX and the plan for $XX per month.

Gee, where have I heard that before (and seen it fail).. oh wait.. Sprint just tried that. Problem with that idea (and Sprint has found out), you have a large group of "push to talk" wacko's who do not want to give up the chirp. So, just like Sprint, TM will run the risk of pissing off nextel customers and end up loosing money.. just like Sprint. From my understanding, it's not the CDMA people they are bleeding. It's Nextel.

From what I understand, the CDMA side would still be growing at a lower rate than the competition- but it is growing.

Nextel should just be spun off (or sold off, if you can find anyone), all the people left on it are probably the types who you'd find the hardest to switch to anything else... let the company sink (more likely) or swim on its own, then they can't blame anyone when the ship goes down.

Honestly, if Sprint wanted Nextel subs to migrate they could easily convince people with really good deals on phones, plans, wireless cards, etc... Alot of people I know that have legacy Nextel phones won't switch because there is no benefit in doing so...

TM doesnt want Nextel. They want Sprint. Sprint has already said they were considering spinning off Nextel to their own company; which would give Sprint the right to sell the Sprint Wireless network.

but no Sprint messed up by not forcing Nextel contracts over to the Sprint side and by allowing customers to change over to Nextel.

Sprint should have NEVER allowed Sprint customers to "migrate" to Nextel knowing they were going to kill the brand. They should have said "no sorry we're only allowing Nextel customers to come over to Sprint's side". Done deal.

and the Push to Talk is either businesses or people that are just usually lazy and do not want to dial a phone or who are generally rude because they feel that everyone should hear their convos on the damn walkie talkies.

and my post that you replied to never said anything about Nextel. I'm talking about the Sprint side.

Nope.. you didn't but talk about one, you talk about the other.

TM doesn't want Sprint. They want the spectrum. They want the customers. They could care less about the Nortel or 5E switches in markets where they already are. Do you know the cost involved in "converting" them over? They would dump CDMA and show the world what Sprint should have done with it got nextel.

TM also would get most of it's money's worth from Sprints Wireline backbone. It would be like buying a nice new car, opening the trunk and finding a treasure. I would say Sprint was smart to keep it's legacy LD backbone/switches intact when it spun off it's local division. Sad thing is, it's easily overlooked.

No surprise

Didn't seem to surprise Wall Street as stock is steady.

Now that qChat PTT is up and running on CDMA, Sprint needs to move as many iDen users to it, dump the iDen network and users who won't switch and move on and as a smaller, leaner more manageable company with a specific path.

Nope. Not Sprint. They are pretty resilient. They should just take a write off and dissolve Nextel. What are they going to do.. Piss off another few million customers? Hell, what are they gonna do, jump ship? Screw'em. Give them 30 days to switch to CDMA or go somewhere else. End of story. Can't get a break from the press anyway so time to not give a crap and just do it.

Well if you live in the middle of the Adirondacks and Appalachia of course you're going to get spotty service. No one is 100% covered.

Stick to the network that works best in your area even if it is, UnknownPCS Co. Now if you want to go national, go with the big boys.

Sprint has worked for me from the caribbean up to Ontario & Quebec, and then over to to the west coast and Mexico.

Re: Spotty service

Sprint used to have great coverage around the Midwest it was until after the Sprint-Nextel merger that coverage became a problem. Them moving equipment to Nextel towers and adding Nextel equipment to Sprint. adding Nextel to sprint was the only good thing that happened.

I had sprint and after the merger coverage sucked. Many people around the southwest MI and NW Ohio have the same problem with coverage- its spotty and does not roam around here to anyone else.

That's funny. I work near Toledo, drive through Toledo every day, and live out in the middle of nowhere outside of Genoa, OH. No Sprint coverage problems here, pretty close to Verizon voice wise and miles ahead with EVDO coverage. Want spotty coverage here, try AT&T. I have had the service from work for years and I can't stand it.

Re: Spotty service

Sprint service here depends on the side of town you're on and where they actually have the tower. None of them are located anywhere near within the city. AT&T on the other hand has some of their towers in the city and have a large network here thanks to the old AT&T Wireless-before Cingular's merger.

Nextel also has shitty service here.

Network

Sprint has perhaps the best voice and data network of all the carriers. Year after year, Virgin Mobile was rated highest when it comes to voice quality and signal quality, but Virgin Mobile is just a reseller of Sprint. Sprint was the first carrier to roll out 3G, and they are looking to the future with WiMax. What has taken Sprint down is their customer service. The new CEO is working hard to fix that, but I think it might be too late. I called Sprint customer service the other day, and I must say it was actually a positive experience for once.

Agreed. Sprint's network is on the very bottom of their list of problems. As for CS, I called in a couple weeks ago to activate a new phone for a relative and the person was actually very nice and knowledgeable, and located in the United States.

Odd, I thought it was pretty clearly obvious that CDMA voice quality is better than GSM - it can be explained technically and is pretty obvious when checking them all from a landline phone. The worst sounding to me are ATT and T-Mobile phones. Sprint, Verizon, Alltel and other CDMA users w/out any question sound better - I suppose it's subjective. But it will also depend on the phone itself. Some CDMA phones are indeed crappy.

Well, I use to be on VZW for 8 years and they do have better call quality than the GSM carriers. However, while it could be the phones or maybe poorly spaced cell towers creating a bad signal...I don't like talking to several of my friends cause of the quality of the call.

Haven't had many problems

I've been with sprint for a good 5 years now, and surprisingly, I've had little to no problems with them. A minor billing issue now and then because I changed my plan in the middle of a billing period, but overall, the experience has been good. I have yet to stop in a place that I haven't at least had digital roaming, and usually regular coverage is good.

sprint is great

not sure why so many people are leaving. It's BY FAR the best deal around. Sero for $30 a month for 500 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited data. $25 bonus for being referred by a current subscriber. Usually another $50 off coupon or so.

No problems here.

I don't really get it (at least for the CDMA side)... Sprint's been very good for me. Cheap price (SERO), and the few times I've had to call CS, they were great. I was given accurate info, and the one situation that couldn't be solved right away, the CSR said she'd call me back the next day, and she actually did, which doesn't happen too often these days...

Coverage is good too, not Verizon good, but good enough. There's just one place where I shop that doesn't have Sprint signal, the phone starts roaming, not really a deal breaker.

race to the bottom?

Not even the $99 all you can eat, all features (where available) wasn't good enough to keep subscribers from jumping off the titanic?

Go figure! You can't say that they didn't have this coming from screwing up the core loyal base of Nextel subscribers! Sprint customer service reps really killed off this FREE revenue stream when buying Nextel, and now the party's over. Sprint's Nextel loss is Verizon's gain.

Re: race to the bottom?

You can't really go by the unlimited plan yet because that started over halfway through Q1.

Sprint's customer service is slowly getting better.

Their commercials are getting better and make more sense.

Their phone lineup will be getting better I think.

QChat will be a good thing once Rev A is more widely available (mainly identical coverage to iDEN).

WiMAX is still unknown.

They need to buy out iPCS if they can afford it. People in those areas suffer greatly when compared to native Sprint areas.

This is all speaking about the CDMA side though. I don't believe they will be expanding iDEN anymore. Nextel customers were loyal and they really dislike Sprint (although Sprint isn't that bad in most areas), but because of the merger, Nextel customers didn't want to stay with Sprint, so most of them are the ones still leaving.

I don't know why some people think another merger is the answer. T-Mobile is a completely different technology, and the resulting company would be running 3+ technologies. That just spells disaster IMO.

I've had Sprint since 2000 and I've been pretty happy with them. I've only had a couple serious issues in the past 8 years, all of which I got resolved eventually. I've been happy with my phones and my service. Coverage was good in Texas where I lived and coverage is just as good (if not better) here in Illinois where I live. I don't travel a lot, but everywhere I've gone I've had good service. There's a couple areas that I know of that have bad coverage, but every carrier in those areas has bad coverage.

T-M wouldnt be running 3 networks. Only 2 and the CDMA could be shut down without a problem within 3 to 4 years. Sprint already wants to dump Nextel so that would only leave CDMA. Read my post on here down farther on how they could ditch the CDMA network without a problem.

I say that they will reach 48 million by Q1 2009 as the company continues to restructure itself to stabilize the current technologies they have. Or this will bounce back like a boomerang and by Q3 of this year we will be in for a surprise that I am not certain but could possibly happen.

Re: !.!.!.!

SERO (and the way to finagle the discounts) is really only known to a few thousand people trolling deal sites therefore the overall impact of new lines from these people is really minimal.

Also, the all-you-can-eat plan has only been out for a couple of months (it might be too early to tell the impact of it) because people have a tendency to stay with their phone company until their contract runs out. With money being tight not many want to take a $150-200 ETF hit right now even if they can recoup it over the next 12 months. I didn't think people would be running to get this deal and unfortunately, I don't see the $100M campaign for the new Jesus-phone killer working either.

Sprint needed to make something happen quickly and I think they had the right idea to just offer up it's network as a 'dumb pipe' system for a fixed price. Not sure if the simply everything plan will be enough to save the company because the $99 price point is still pretty high. Maybe these new subscriber losses will push the price even lower. How about a $30 SERO plan for the masses, that would kick AT&T, VZW in the pants. Unfortunately, your share holders would stage a mutiny...

Why no SIM???

No idea why CDMA phones like Sprint / Verizon can't have something that makes life SO MUCH easier ... A SIM CARD!!! Really, what is the issue???? I like CDMA but the simple SIM card in GSM phones may make me switch.
Sprint can be real pr*cks when simply upgrading to a new handset or when they *extended my contract* because I had them turn on an old unused handset with my existing (no contract) number (dropped my orig phone). They then make you pay FULL price for another phone if less then 2 yrs after that! Bast**rds!!!

Sprint works like a charm and is very inexpensive

Crystal clear call quality ..no dropped calls ..V3M phone is easy to use ..no issues with billing ..basically no issues at all..even roaming works and is free.

For about $31/mo ..I can make a voice call anytime I want.
I never run out of minutes an duse the after hours mins too.

Then again ..I only make phone calls ..all the other crap is for other people to play with. I just don't need or want it.

Re: Sprint works like a charm and is very inexpensive

I have my step dad, wife, cousin and friend on SERO.

My friend Tony was paying 128 bucks a month on Verizon. I told him to go to Sprint with a SERO account. He couldn't be happier than a pig in Sh!t.

He's paying 34 a month, walks around with his laptop and tethers (every day) sends a ton of messages. As a matter of fact, he paid 175 dollars to verizon to get out of his contract. Now he's getting his mom and sister to drop VZ and move over to sprint.

My cousin Charlie he used to be on a regular 450min plan paying 49 bucks plus the text msg+picture mail was paying like 70 bucks... but I got him 27% off with my corp discount. He switched to the 30 dollar SERO, they kept his corp discount, now he's bill is like 28 dollars, has more mins and texts faster than he can type on a freaken keyboard.

I have an old plan, 70 a month for 2 phones (800 Min) + 15 for EVDO + 8 for 500 text - 27% off = Monthly $78 bucks. If I go over my 800 Mins... I only pay 5 bucks for 100 mins.

NextHELL merger killed Sprint

The merger with Nextel is really what killed Sprint.

A MILLION + subs a quarter? WTF? That's some serious shit.

A lot of state and local governments have started dropping Nextel in favor of competing carriers.

I'm forced to use Nextel at work for car to car communications, and half the time it doesn't work.

Worst thing Sprint ever did was merge with Nextel, now they caught the Nextel disease, and most likely are done.

Anyone want to guess who wind the Deutch Telcom cup next year?

I like Sprint

I like sprint. I rely heavily on alltel roaming at home but everwhere else is pretty good. I do live in the middle of nowhere. Sprints roaming agreements ARE better than verizon and anyone elses. Yes, verizon does roam on sprint, but only in select areas. I know this because the town i live in had sprint coverage for years and anyone with a verizon phone couldnt get any service at all until verizon added a tower. With sprint you can use verizon and alltel pretty much anywhere. So its like you have 3 networks for the price of 1.

My $0.25

I use Sprint for EVDO and am very thankful for them - it's the only form of broadband I can get out here where I live. The service has been rock-solid and talking to customer service has not been an issue at all for me. I have ATT for phone service and can say that my experience with them has been painful - I've tried three different phones and even did a number of warranty exchanges but still have constant droped calls and call failed problems at home and all over town (even with full signal). With that being said, I decided to try out Boost Mobile for a few days (prepaid service that runs off nextel/sprint) and I've noticed that I am experiencing rock-solid service and can make/take calls without any issues - if I could get out from my contract with att I'd switch to sprint for wireless too!

I have ordered 2 phones (two separate orders), they shipped them and refused to honor the terms (refused to activate them - told me they could not find the plans I was talking about) even though I had order receipts showing monthly charges/minutes etc.

Right now I am on a basic plan - 200 min for $29.99, not really a good deal.

I only use my phone to talk to people, no data and other crap.

The Service is good but customer service blows I was a customer for 6 years and just renewed, every renewal I've ever done was a billing nightmare. The latest after 3 months of incorrect bills ended in them telling me they could not hoonr the offer from retention because the codes were no longer in the system.
