Sprint Lets MVNOs Use Old Sprint Smartphones New 'Bring Your Own Sprint Device' Program Tipped by i2Fuzzy 
Sprint this week announced a new program that will let users bring older Sprint devices to use on one of Sprint's growing number of MVNOs. MVNOs tend to not have the big budget phones and focus on lower cost service anyway, so the Bring Your Own Sprint Device (BYOSD) program simply adds less expensive pre-owned devices to that equation. "BYOSD is intended to help Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) address the growing number of inactive devices in the marketplace and offset the phone subsidy burden through the reactivation of used and inactive Sprint-branded devices on qualified MVNO price plans," says the company. It's something (correct me if I'm wrong) Ting already started doing a month or two ago.

| Not Entirely New Like you said, Ting has been offering this for several months already. Sprint-owned MVNO Boost has also been offering something similar already. And some other Sprint MVNO's have as well, I think.
Sounds to be that they're expanding the program. | |

Frederick, MD | Done it on Ting You're right. BYOD has been available with Ting for some time. For anyone who is using Sprint, is happy enough to stay with Sprint, and uses relatively small amounts of minutes/txt/data, Ting is a no-brainer in my opinion. My family of 4 is saving about $110 a month since switching to Ting, and we brought our Sprint devices with us. I show my friends (who are current Sprint users) the savings they will see with Ting and they can't believe that it's true. Several of them have switched and are enjoying savings each month.
So far Sprint is not allowing BYOD LTE devices. You can buy an LTE device from Ting, but you can't BYOD. Maybe that will change.
Apple also told Ting they are too small so they can't have the iPhone. I know some people who also hope that changes soon. | |

The fact that Sprint opening up their LTE network at all is a sign of weakness. It will be a looooong time before ATT & VZ opens up their LTE network to MVNO's. | |

kudos:3 | How about Sprint get their network in order first.. I realize the Network Vision upgrade is in progress but there still a long, long way to go. They are nearing but haven't passed the one third mark yet.
They have however finished with many of the towers near where I live and work and the 3G network is still definitely over capacity. Streaming media rarely works. LTE is good when it works, but forget about it indoors with 1900 MHz.
Sprint really needs to focus on getting their iDen frequencies refarmed and NV upgrades complete before encouraging even more traffic on their strained data networks. Additionally it doesn't seem to make much business sense to allow your customers to leave for MVNOs that don't generate nearly the ARPU that retail subs do..  | |
