Sprint: No More WiMax Devices
Support Will Continue, But New Offerings End
by Karl Bode Tuesday 17-Jan-2012 tags: business · wireless · hardware · alternatives · bandwidth · wireless
Late in 2010 Sprint announced a new plan to retrofit all of their base stations not only with more energy efficient gear, but also with 800 MHz, 1.9 GHz spectrum, 4G 2.5 GHz hardware that can simultaneously support Mobile WiMax, EVDO and LTE. As Sprint made clear last October they plan to run all three technologies simultaneously for a few years, and while Sprint has chosen their words carefully and insists they're still dedicated to WiMax, the writing has been on the wall for the technology. As you might expect, Sprint says they won't be unveiling any more WiMax devices as the company gears up for the launch of their LTE network and new LTE devices like the Galaxy Nexus sometime in the middle of this year.

Makes no financial sense...

...for Sprint to spend advertising money pushing WiMax through the proverbial nose, advertising "unlimited" bandwidth, and then decide that it's time to cut the rope.

It's almost like, why did they even spend the money on WiMax in the first place? I mean, maybe there's some technical detail I'm missing here, but I feel like Sprint really wasted a ton of money in claiming the whole "FIRST 4G CARRIER" status, when in the end they were just going to migrate to LTE anyway.

You are assuming they knew back when they committed to Wimax that they were going to dump it and go LTE. When they made that Wimax decision, I don't think they knew they would eventually go all in for LTE.

Back when Sprint selected WiMAX they didn't have a choice. LTE wasn't ready yet and the Feds said they must use the spectrum or lose it.

Also, Sprint will still sell existing WiMAX phones, just not bring out new models. It seems a little premature given they plan to support WiMAX through 2015. The good news is that they appear fully committed to getting LTE rolled out as fast as they can.

Maybe they're hoping TD-LTE Advanced and WiMAX 2 will merge into a single standard ASAP.

Whats sad is the amount of time it took to build the WiMax network out to just 130 million people, was surpassed by Verizon's LTE in only 4 months.

Re: Makes no financial sense...

That had more to do with Sprint's financial situation, and the now obvious notion that Wimax was going to be abandoned for LTE. Sprint knew they were going to LTE long before it was officially announced, and we were all just speculating on the reason for the sluggish deployment.

WiMAX is still twice as fast as 3G, and was available 2 years ago. Carriers are only now starting to roll out LTE.

I often get 10-12Mbps on WiMAX (Epic Touch), though it's usually 5-7Mbps.

WiMax was not that bad...

I live in the Kansas City area and coverage was pretty good at most places, outside, standing still. Using the service while traveling was not that great, however it worked in a pinch (or two). There are some gaps even in the "covered areas", and speeds aren't like what you now see with LTE. However I have had WiMax for a few years now, whereas LTE was just launched by another carrier recently.

You do realize Kansas City is Sprint's corporate headquarters? Heads will roll if an exec finds less than full bars anywhere.

There are plenty of holes in KC on the CDMA network. I can imagine it was significantly harder to get WiMax at 2500 usable.

I will file that under "fantasy".

dammit!

And I was hoping for a photon 2(Intel Medfield with NFC) as an update to the best current WiMax device.

VHS vs Betamax

WiMax and LTE were like VHS vs Betamax. LTE has won for mobile phone, but Wimax remains for fixed wireless in rural areas.

Sprint allied itself with Intel to showcase Wimax in the hopes that it would gain momentum, but at the end, it didn't.

What may have sealed the deal was that Vodaphone, which partly owns Verizon got verizon to announce that it would be going LTE to be compatible with the rest of the world. (So that Vodaphone customers could roam on Verizon instead of AT&T or T-Mobile when they travel to USA).

No new WiMax only devices?

I wonder if this mean no new WiMax only devices. Maybe they will come out with new LTE/WiMax combo devices.

Only mobile broadband hotspots, never smartphones.

They debuted the Sierra Wireless tri-network (EVDO, WiMAX, LTE) hotspot at CES a little while back.

Americas Favorite WiMax Network? 2 year contract? No Thanks.

In urban areas with a high population density before HSPA and LTE, WiMax was the best thing since sliced bread. But now it's not more than just a limited patchwork of city wide hotspots. It's old news.

For those of us in suburban or rural areas, a WiMax phone is not a strong selling point on a 2 year contract. And neither is Sprint 3G.

However, if you do live in a WiMax area, it still has a lot of life left in it, but just not with Sprint. Clear WiMax is a much better value.

I have to agree with Sprint. Why beat a dead horse?

sprint's backhaul

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if sprint's wimax is working great, and they will be adding lte antennas to the same towers, does that mean sprints backhaul is already in good shape for lte?

Re: sprint's backhaul

Backhaul upgrades are apparently part of the multi-protocol rollout. Someone in Houston posted Sprint LTE results and claimed that 3G performance also improved due to the backhaul upgrade.

Don't forget iDEN

...the leftover from Nextel. They're phasing it out, but for now, they're still operating it.

Re: Don't forget iDEN

Given the massive number of subscribers fleeing the iDEN network each and every quarter I'd say it's pretty much forgotten already.

CLEAR User

@supervalu.com

Okay for me!

Being a CLEAR Home user ... I am totally okay with this ... less load on "my" towers.

For downloads about 6 months back, I was averaging 6 Mbit down. CLEAR claims 3 to 6. Now I typically average around 8 Mbit down.

With no more "new" devices being added, that will hopefully mean not as many devices being added as there is no incentive for folks to upgrade and new folks will hopefully want to wait for the latest greatest LTE; so, more bandwidth for me

I wonder if clear will survive

with no more devices on the WiMax network, that means Sprint will be ready for a divorce and not care what happens to clear.
