| Makes no financial sense... ...for Sprint to spend advertising money pushing WiMax through the proverbial nose, advertising "unlimited" bandwidth, and then decide that it's time to cut the rope.
It's almost like, why did they even spend the money on WiMax in the first place? I mean, maybe there's some technical detail I'm missing here, but I feel like Sprint really wasted a ton of money in claiming the whole "FIRST 4G CARRIER" status, when in the end they were just going to migrate to LTE anyway. -- Do or do not, there is no try! - Yoda

You are assuming they knew back when they committed to Wimax that they were going to dump it and go LTE. | | | Back when Sprint selected WiMAX they didn't have a choice. LTE wasn't ready yet and the Feds said they must use the spectrum or lose it.
Also, Sprint will still sell existing WiMAX phones, just not bring out new models. It seems a little premature given they plan to support WiMAX through 2015. The good news is that they appear fully committed to getting LTE rolled out as fast as they can.

Whats sad is the amount of time it took to build the WiMax network out to just 130 million people, was surpassed by Verizon's LTE in only 4 months.

That had more to do with Sprint's financial situation, and the now obvious notion that Wimax was going to be abandoned for LTE. Sprint knew they were going to LTE long before it was officially announced, and we were all just speculating on the reason for the sluggish deployment.

| VHS vs Betamax WiMax and LTE were like VHS vs Betamax. LTE has won for mobile phone, but Wimax remains for fixed wireless in rural areas.
Sprint allied itself with Intel to showcase Wimax in the hopes that it would gain momentum, but at the end, it didn't.
What may have sealed the deal was that Vodaphone, which partly owns Verizon got verizon to announce that it would be going LTE to be compatible with the rest of the world. (So that Vodaphone customers could roam on Verizon instead of AT&T or T-Mobile when they travel to USA).

| | No new WiMax only devices? I wonder if this mean no new WiMax only devices. Maybe they will come out with new LTE/WiMax combo devices. | |

| | | Re: No new WiMax only devices? Only mobile broadband hotspots, never smartphones.
They debuted the Sierra Wireless tri-network (EVDO, WiMAX, LTE) hotspot at CES a little while back.

|
| | | Re: sprint's backhaul Backhaul upgrades are apparently part of the multi-protocol rollout. Someone in Houston posted Sprint LTE results and claimed that 3G performance also improved due to the backhaul upgrade. | |

| | Okay for me! Being a CLEAR Home user ... I am totally okay with this ... less load on "my" towers.
For downloads about 6 months back, I was averaging 6 Mbit down. CLEAR claims 3 to 6. Now I typically average around 8 Mbit down.
With no more "new" devices being added, that will hopefully mean not as many devices being added as there is no incentive for folks to upgrade and new folks will hopefully want to wait for the latest greatest LTE; so, more bandwidth for me
