Sprint Offers 99 Cent Netbook
Taking subsidized netbook deals to new low
by Karl Bode Tuesday 07-Jul-2009 tags: competition · business · hardware · wireless
Sprint has joined AT&T and Verizon in the subsidized netbook game, offering users the Compaq 1040DX netbook for just 99 cents when purchased at Best Buy, with a two year agreement with Sprint for EVDO service. The same subsidized netbook when purchased from Best Buy for AT&T for Verizon will run you $199. The netbook offers the standard specs when it comes to netbooks: 10.1″ display with 1024 x 576 resolution, 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, three-cell battery, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive 16 GB solid state drive (one user tells us the Best Buy flyer got the hard drive specs wrong).

Whats the catch?

I know you have to sing up with sprint's EVDO for two years, but still 99 cents?!

Rumor?

Am I hearing correctly that there is no WiFi and this book is EVDO only?

The spec sheet seems to indicate Wi-Fi:

It definitely looks as if a deactivated WiFi is just a rumor. The conversation I found turned into a Sprint hate fest anyway.

last i checked, it's the same as with all providers: $60/month for 5 gigs.

Re: how much?

unless you're on SERO, upon which it's $49.99 a month for 5GB (if you were grandfathered, it's still infinite, however).

From what I've heard the cap is kind of loose...can't confirm that though, as I'm no longer a customer.

can you transfer your existing datacard account? (btw. I get an employer discount of 19% on my cap grandfathered datacard)

Re: how much?

Doubt it.. it's obviously for new lines of service at the price rate they want.. I doubt they're giving virtually a free netbook for those already in a plan... that's discounted.

As far as I can tell, you can extend the datacard contract and keep the grandfathered soft cap.

Re: how much?

There are no grandfathered soft caps... That's been escalated up to the presidents office at Sprint.. they changed all the services, both personal and business (as they are all the same anyway) and the rules are what they are for everyone now.. that's been told to me from the office of the president of Sprint.. if you know otherwise, please let me know.. would be interesting to see how they grandfathered.. Mine is a bonafide business account and have had it for quite some time now.

I don't pay for overages.... I have a grandfathered plan. Without reading the fine print, I can bet you a beer you pay dearly for usage above 5GB with this netbook.

Specs misprinted

Best Buy misprinted the specs in its flyers. It only has a 16 Gig solid state drive, not 160 Gig Hard Drive as stated. Was pretty disappointed in that when I went to store to look at it. No bluetooth either. But it does indeed have Wi-Fi. What notebook this day and age wouldn't?

As for the 99 cents, I think it's only a 1 week promo, and coming from Sprint, it's not competition, it's desperation. But tempting nonetheless, and if it helps Sprint recover some customer base then hey, go for it.

What operating system did it have? XP or Vista? The spec sheet doesn't say.

Thanks for info. I suspect that they will move to Windows 7 Basic by year end.

AOL

I remember about 3 yrs ago CC was offering nice Toshiba laptops for 250 after a 2yr commitment with AOL at 25 a month. We bought two, paid one month of AOL and then reported our cards stolen so we could stop all charges and get new cards with new numbers. We never heard anything back from AOL. The laptops were 600 each without the commitment.

Netbooks aren't expensive enough to require a subsidy

I like the idea of mobile carriers supporting netbook, and them having 3G/4G/LTE modems from the get go.

I don't really understand why you'd bother subsidizing it... they run from $250-350 CAD and generally have a much longer shelf life than a cell phone (3-5 years vs. 1-3 years for a cellphone)

A decent smartphone would run you at least $400 and be obsolete in 18 month... I can see the point of a subsidy there, but do we really need one for a netbook?

because you're very likely to get people to go over their limits of 5GB/month and can get a lot more money in return. The subsidy gets people hooked onto netbooks when they otherwise might not.

I can sort of see it, but a netbook is relatively inexpensive, and a very small amount of Due Dilligence would make you think twice about signing any type of contract for it.

This is a very good point. My iPhone 3G cost me $199 subsidized... I think it's like $500 unsubidy... This netbook, $0.99. I wonder what the unsubsidy price is on it. I'm sure it's still lower then $500 though. sigh...

Are you serious? This is AMERICA we're talking about. Land of the Free, home of the bailout. Due dilligence is like, soooooo last century.

Netbook subsidies

Personally I think the subsidies are a GREAT idea, provided your intention is to get the service anyway and are willing to commit, just as you do with a cell phone. Europeans hve been sucking these up in droves for about a year now.

I'm just not quite sure I'm willing to commit to a contract, even though I've never gone over a 5 Gig limit tethering a cell to my laptop when I had the tethering options.

And with Wi-Fi almost everywhere these days, 3G is becoming less of a "must have" for mobility. This of course, may change with the coming of LTE and (hopefully) no (or at least liberal) data caps.

Re: Netbook subsidies

If they had no cap the mobile ISPs could do major damage to fixed ISPs. It may not be as fast but it can go with you and that is good. Am I the only one here who would drop my fixed connection in a heart beat for a decent priced mobile one with no cap?

at least

Well, at least with them all doing this, maybe someone will eventually increase the cap from 5 gig to say at least 7 gig to entice people from other providers, and then maybe someone else will go higher, and eventually maybe they will return to unlimited (true unlimited, not the gay one )) and we'll actually have something to work with...

Oh wait... Might find a snowball in hell first.. :-/
