Sprint Pins Their Hopes On The Pre
Webcast later today should offer more detail...
by Karl Bode Thursday 12-Mar-2009 tags: competition · business · wireless · hardware
Sprint is busy trying to repair their public image caused by the Nextel disaster, and lately has been telling anyone who'll listen that their customer service doesn't suck quite as much as it used to (something many customers around here seem to support). They're also placing a lot of hope on the launch of the EVDO-ready Palm Pro and the upcoming and long-awaited Palm "iPhone killing" Pre. Everybody's attention is fixed on the latter, though CNET favorably reviews the Pro for those interested. Meanwhile, you can expect to be bombarded with a wave of Pre coverage tonight and tomorrow, since Palm and Sprint are holding a private webcast later today highlighting some of the phone's functionality.

Update: Gizmodo has the lowdown on the Pre plan pricing.

SERO

Just offer the SERO plan again and bring it to the whole market, not just the market of nerds like us here.

That'll get their sub counts up, especially when everyone is focusing on the bottom dollar.

agreed...and at the same time, offer free incoming to add to the SERO plan (or any other plan, if you didn't want SERO for some odd reason) for $5-$10 extra a month....people, once they found out the features of the SERO plan, would probably be willing to switch, even with Sprint's horrible CS (it's improving though, IMHO).

Re: I am Sprint-phobic

I don't expect many people to be 'running' to any carrier this year, with the basic craptastic economy. I'd be keeping my Tilt for a long time, and purchasing unlocked.

Each carrier has its 'gadget' phone:

AT&T: iPhone - great for the 'average' user, weak for business. Downside: everything must go through iTunes

Sprint: Palm Pre - basically a 'better' iPhone. Still waiting to see what other apps will be available beyond its standard apps (lets hope its not crippled like iPhone)

T-Mobile: G1 - Open source Limited 3G coverage and Google tracking is its downside

VZW: Blackberry Storm - great for business users

Customer service still sucks

Yea they still stuck.

Begin Rant!

Ok my wife upgraded our phone at Best Buy. She got a Rant for free plus the $18 activation charge. Ok fine

Well she didn't like the rant returned it. Had number transferred back to old phone. Still things seem fine.

Found out later they didn't bother to remove the $18 fee. Called and got that taken care of. First mistake but easy to fix.

Also failed to return the old phone to upgrade status. Second mistake. Called said they would put a note in file and we would have to call and order directly or go to Sprint store.

Went to Sprint store to buy Highnote. Store couldn't match online Sprint store price $19.99. How inconvenient.

Calls and explains situation when ordering highnote online about the upgrade credit not being done correctly. Guy says no problem. She orders red highnote and confirmed no activation or shipping and price was $20

Well phone arrived. Blue highnote. Third mistake. Calls again and is told if she didn't open it could exchange it at store. Ok we go to store exchange it. Found they billed us $149 for phone. Fourth mistake.

Also noticed they removed my upgrade credit instead of hers. 5th mistake. Guess the guy to the easy way out and just used my credit instead of doing override.

So in all she was on the phone for 3.5 hours dealing with this and its still not totally fixed.

Edit just figured out they extended the contract on my phone instead of wifes new phone. Mistake 7

Re: Customer service still sucks

You could have avoided all that by just getting the phone she really wanted on the Sprint.com site. No activation charge either. There's too much waiting to go wrong when you return a phone like that.

The link in article takes you to Palm Treo Pro not the pre.

Unfortunately for MY use (and many coworkers), this device might be useful as a brick:

I don't really care for Windows mobile, but even on Blackberry, iPhone and G1, I can obtain an SSH client (required for work).
Pocket PuTTy works great on WinMo, including tunnels

Windows RDP client (available on Tilt, had to search for it to install on Treo 800w), clients or similar for iPhone and BB.

Hey swintec!

Yeah, I can't wait either..2 yrs now w/ my Centro, and while I love it, I have had it long enough to be ready to move on to the next phone, and I think the Pre is it...anyone have a rough time frame? I wasn't able to scratch one up.

Sprint Customer Support pretty good this week

I am at the very tail end of a Sprint Customer support issue.

I called to get an upgrade from a Rev 0 EVDO card to a Rev A card. That call went along very well, nice person, go the upgrade processed at a good pace, and sounds well coached.

UPS then decides on its own to deliver my card NEXT DOOR! Well, no one next door knows anything about the package.
I call Customer Care and get routed to Sales Support (I trust I have the department names ok). Both people were a professional as one could be and seem well coached. The Sales person worked with me and went beyond what she needed to do. The Department that was supposed to handle it was still closed but she helped me anyway and did not drop me off to wait for the real department to open. We get UPS on the line an a report opened.

Later I called Order Support, the real department to handle this and continued to work it with them. The rep there is very nice as well. He leads me through the process, but then has to handle me off to something like "Lost and Refunds" or something like that. He pops back on the line with a surprised voice. He days that department has DISAPPEARED. It was there on Friday but gone today.

At this point I though I was about to go into "Sprint Hell"

He goes off the phone and brings me to Customer Care and we discuss the situation will work with this new situation. I have to give them 2 days to process and call back.

I call back 2 days later. I did hit a a small bump with a slightly crusty Customer Care person but after a little problem history she got on track and directed me to Order Support. The gentleman in Order Support was got things going, they had worked out how they were going to handle "dissappering department" and got another EVDO card on its way to me. He was smooth, well coached and got it done.

In my opinion, this was the best customer problem handling I have gotten from Sprint. Other than the "disappearing department" it could not have been handled much better given
the size of the company and such.

I have had bad moments with Sprint. This was not one of them.

Of course I am still waiting for the card. They processed it yesterday. But trucks can only go so fast.

Coverage is still terrible....

Don't matter the fancy schmancy phone if you have NO COVERAGE. Sprint, Tmobile, MetroPCS, Cricket, Revo.

Sprint won't be around by 2011, they will have been taken over by MetroPCS or some one to form a bigger network at probably $0.10 on the dollar.

Once sprint is off the hook for the rebanding bill, nexhell will be unloaded to NII.

Re: Coverage is still terrible....

Huh, Sprint has better roaming agreement than any carrier. I'm able to use my phone just about anywhere, even some extremely remote areas in Montana and South Dakota on recent trips. Friend's ATT phone didn't work.

True that native lacks in outskirt areas but with roaming, I have no issues.

Am planning to get the Pre when released. Still on an older Treo.

I have both AT&T and Sprint.
Coverage in general in my area of SoCal is pretty much on par.
Treo 800W on Sprint
HTC Tilt on AT&T
When I'm on conferences, people tend to dislike the audio (tell me I'm breaking up) on Sprint lately.

Re: Coverage is still terrible....

I'm not sure if you can do so on the 800w or not, but on many of the Sprint phones you can enter the master programming menu with your MSL code and change the audio codec used. The Sprint phones I've dealt with always defaulted to the worst on the list.

Cricket != Sprint. At all.

I would know. Cricket coverage just about everywhere is nil. I switched to Sprint and have coverage everywhere.

Cricket has its own (crappy) network.

Re: how much longer

I'd suspect many carriers would prefer Chapter 11/13 (not likely anyways) before anyone would buy them out.

Anyone that would want Sprint, would probably not want Nextel/Boost.

I do think that Sprint is likely to pump up subs on iDEN with Boost, then sell it off.

Ignore that feeling. Anti-trust laws coupled with the current administration in Washington wouldn't allow Sprint to be gobbled up by AT&T or VZW. They probably will still be able to swallow small, rural carriers, but a entity the size of Sprint? Forget about it.

No Probs here

Sprint has been a Godsend to us. No issues whatsoever with their customer service with our cells. Actual Service is far better then ATT&T in our area. How can you beat all of Sprint's towers, plus in roam you get to use all Verizon's towers fro free since roam is included with out plans. Our coverage is a bit hard to be beat honestly. We have dealt with in store customer service twice now on phone issues, and both times they were top notch and fixed everything promptly.

If anyone here knows my feelings about Sprint after the entire ADSL service I had through them that got even worse after Embarq, it pains me greatly to give Sprint kudos and compliments, pains me dearly, but I have to give credit where credit is do!

Re: No Probs here

I reply to all of the Sprint bashing threads. I had ATT, Verizon and Cingular (when they were around) and Sprint SERVICE & COVERAGE is the absolute best, hands down. I don't know where the guy earlier lives, but its got to be quasi remote...I dont' think I have ever been anywhere I didn't have signal...if it wasn't Sprints tower, I went to roaming, but Sprint doesn't charge for that, so moot point.

The one negative, and as the blurb says, they're working on it, is that their customer service reps leave a LOT to be desired. Consistancy is non-existant knowledge adn experience wise....one may be awesome, the next has to concentrate to chew gum correctly. Aside from a few billing issues, I hardly have to deal with them anyway....couple all of this with the amazing SERO plan I have with them (1500/min, N&W @ 7pm, and unlimited everything else for 54/mo) and I am not going anywhere anytime soon. I really don't know why they don't offer the SERO plan again and openly...call it the ERO plan, whatever...they'd crush the market in pure volume. I have to say, give Sprint a chance...I really don't think you'll be disappointed, and I daresay pleased!

Anyway, yeah I am waiting for the Pre...hopefully it lives up to the hype!

Sprints Track record with new phones.

Well I hope the Palm Pre on Sprint is better handeled than the Samsung Instinct was. The Instinct was not ready for prime time and it took a long time for sprint and Samsung to get things right. The Pre looks real nice but I think I will wait to see what the original release looks like.
