Sprint Plans ZTE Mobile Hotspot 'Peel' For iPod Touch
Mobile hotspots get sleeker and sexier
by Karl Bode Thursday 29-Jul-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware · alternatives
Phone Scoop noticed a few documents in the ever-compelling FCC document pile that reference a new and somewhat different product from ZTE that's set to launch via Sprint. From the documents, it appears to be some kind of sleeve that can be wrapped around the iPod Touch but has no physical connection to the device. Instead, it appears that the device is essentially a tiny 3G hotspot integrated into a case, allowing users to easily connect their iPod Touch to the Sprint 3G network. Like many of these mobile hotspots, this one comes with integrated GPS and supports up to five additional devices via Wi-Fi. Full documents and photos for the device are available here at the FCC website.

wow

I like this setup..

I already use my Itouch as a cell phone when ever I can get a wifi signal. If done right, you could use this and just get a 3g-data plan, for any wifi device, such as the itouch/ipad, or the new android tablets.

Re: wow

Curious that it has a Rev0 radio rather than RevA. EVDO Rev0 only does 144K upload at best and I think 2.8Mbps max download instead of 3.2Mbps of RevA. While not that important for this use, I wonder if they did it to cut costs or to have the fixed caps for up/down rates.

Edit: Maybe they used Rev0 so that people don't use it for VoIP. If I recall, Rev0 latency is not as good as RevA either.

Nifty idea overall. Will be interesting to see how Sprint prices monthly rate.

Interesting Direction

With the 2GB caps and other than stellar 3G performance by some AT&T customers, being able to use Sprint's hotspot service might be a viable solution for iPod and iPad users.

These can work out much cheaper than voice/data...

I'd prefer using 3G hot spots to cellular phones.
Unfortunately, there's no 'unlimited', and they don't have them on all carriers yet.

For your average 'person' (this wouldn't be so good for families), use this with Google Voice/Skype and you wouldn't need/want a voice/txt plan.

No 'physical' connection?

Then how the hell does it communicate with the iTouch?

Other than that, I like the idea.. might make my iTouch more useful.. but now having an EVO, I've relegated that piece of junk to a simple (with horrendous software) mp3 player.

So iTouch wifi to the Sprint skin, then through that to Sprint's 3G? Why does that seem retarded to me? Is there really a market for people to use their iTouch on wifi? If you can afford
an iTouch you surely have money to have a smartphone with wifi already, no?

Re: No 'physical' connection?

It can be used for more than just iPod. You can connect several WiFi laptops/devices/etc.

You would actually be using the iPod over 3G, or 4G depending on the device and the location. While the iPod is using WiFi to connect to the Sprint device, the Sprint device is acting like a wireless router and connecting to a 3G/4G signal. This allows a person to use their iPod when away from a WiFi hotspot.

I can only see this being feasible if a person needs 3G access and has no internal 3G capability and/or the Sprint 3G coverage and performance was superior to any alternatives.

This is my setup: Cradlepoint portable wifi router with Sprint USB 3G aircard dongle. I have an iTouch and an Asus netbook. Works everywhere. Have car adapter.

For phone and email I have a qwerty-drawer phone (not a smart phone).

Actually, no. Some people are much more ready to spend $200 on an iPod touch and $0 per month for 24 months on associated service than $200 for an iPhone and $70+taxes&fees per month for 24 months for service

There are no monthly charges on my ipod - unlike the gouging you get with a smart phone.

umm wi-fi or its like verizon mi-fi

This is really exciting, yet talking on it using skype is going to be a hurdle.

THough for techies we would be able to get buy and come up with solutions! How much for Sprint data only plan?

Holy MOLY if true & it works this is awesome!

I would cancel AT&T and use my iPhone 3gs and the newly release Skype that runs in the background. All we really need is data

If this works then this should ignite Sprint's data subscriber growth! All i need is data!

Cool packaging, but...

This is a neat packaging for a wifi hot spot, but with the 4G Overdrive out, I can't see the point of an EVDO-only device.

I'm surprised that it can't act as a charger for the iPod Touch so that you'd never have to take it out of the case, and could recharge both using a single cable. That would make a lot more sense. Also, it could integrate a larger battery to power up the iPod.

Lastly, what are the consequences of having two wifi antennas almost touching? I though wifi performance went way down when the tx and rx antennas were within a foot of each other?

Re: Cool packaging, but...

Maybe they plan on a much cheaper monthly rate for the device. If about the same, then yeah, Overdrive is the obvious choice. So you'd think monthly plan would be priced much lower for this.

Not exactly. Basically an omni antenna on WiFi produces a donus shaped signal. If you're inside the "hole" right next to the antenna, your signal kinda sucks. However I'm betting ZTE has accounted for this with the skin.

Hopefully it will be cheaper, but I sort of doubt it, as you could connect 4 laptops in addition to the iPod.

Yeah, hopefully they have a different type of antenna. It may only be designed to have a 20 foot range or something... which would actually make sense based on battery considerations with a device like this.

Just too funny...

This is funny.. but, if you think about it, with this thing wrapped on an iTouch, Sprint is essentially getting their branded logo on an Apple device with out having to have some working agreement to do so.

So yea, attach the wifi cover to an iTouch, turn it over and there's a Sprint logo.. and quite honest, will be pretty sad when people realize that the Sprint network powers the apple device better than at&t.

On another note - this is a pretty sweet way to carry a hotspot around for iTouch users with out having to have yet another item to haul around.
