Sprint Promises 28 New LTE Markets Coming Soon
Most of Which You've Probably Never Heard Of
by Karl Bode Friday 18-Jan-2013 tags: coverage · wireless · wireless
Continuing the company's insistence that the LTE markets you've been waiting for are just around the corner, Sprint this week proclaimed that 28 New LTE markets will be "coming soon." According to a company press release, the upcoming launch list contains markets like Nacogdoches, Texas and Hot Springs Arkansas, continuing Sprint's early focus on smaller markets. According to Sprint employees, "coming soon" in Sprint's lexicon actually means "sometime in the next six months." Meanwhile a lot of those larger markets Sprint insisted were right around the corner (like New York City and Los Angeles) continue to be AWOL.

Must be upgrading without announcing

I've had Sprint for almost 4 yrs now in my suburban area and the last few weeks is the 1st time I could get 3G data inside my house. And when I turned off the old femtocell, I could actually do a voice call inside the house as well without it. So, their network upgrades must have been done in my area. If I had an LTE phone, maybe it is available here as well. IOW, Sprint is upgrading in many unannounced areas.

Agreed. The city I live in (~30k people) has LTE and we aren't on the list. We've had it for almost a year now.

Lucky. We just moved to a house with almost no reception. The femotocell works for most of the house, but when the cable goes out I have to force my phone to roam. The worst part. About 2 blocks down LTE comes on! I had something similar when I was at my friend's house about 15 miles away. No reception at his condo complex, and a street over and LTE.

Los Angeles is very odd with where LTE is picked up.

Not New

@comcast.net

Really?

I thought being in Grand Rapids Michigan I would qualify as a smaller market but they mean small with a capital "S". Midland Michigan? Come on!

P.S. My password stopped working today. Odd.

Compared to T-Mobile

I went down the list to compare to T-Mobile. T-Mobile is still on 2G in
-Bay City, MI
-Branson, MO
-Gaffney, SC
-Glasgow, KY
-Lake City, FL
-Kingman, AZ
-Midland, MI (no native coverage)
-Nacogdoches, TX
-Eunice, LA (no native coverage)
-Oxford, MO (no native coverage)
-Paris, TX (no native coverage)
-Pittsfield, MA (one cell site has 3G)
-Saginaw, MI
-Waycross, GA

This is at least 332,000 people

Re: Compared to T-Mobile

Small cities like these probably have no more than 5 or 6 cell sites so it's probably pretty easy to upgrade them and call it a market. Bigger areas take longer because there's far more cell sites and fiber needs to be run to practically every site. If the sites are on rooftops rather than actual poles this can take a very long time.

I kind of like how Sprint is getting the easy stuff done first.

Re: Compared to T-Mobile

It is also a way for those doing the upgrades to get acquainted with the gear they will be seeing in the rest of the market. Every installation is unique but the gear in each market will be provided by the same vendor...for the most part. It is easier to do this in a small market where extended down times will impact fewer users.

Branson does have a fair amount of cell sites. A few more sites are needed but that is a debate for another discussion. They may also have some DAS gear in some of the theaters in the area. I'm not sure if they have come up with a solution for upgrading those systems yet.

What's the point in paying for unlimited data from Sprint if cant be used hardly anywhere? I would much rather pay more for data from AT&T and Verizon if I can actually use it. BTW, I still have unlimited data on AT&T.

Re: No love for Cali

What is the point of coverage when you have to take out a mortgage to pay for it? BTW, you are grandfathered with unlimited for now but you actually want a tethering option or FaceTime and you have to drop it. And even with so-called unlimited if you use 3GB they traffic shape you into the ground with edge speeds making the service completely unusable. Oh and then there is the $20 for unlimited texting...joy. They dumped their cheaper texting options. I know, I was grandfathered with my old iP5 with AT&T and I had to drop my $5 texting plan if I upgraded through them (to keep it you had to upgrade through Apple daut kaum). With Sprint, unlimited means unlimited and I still get the tethering option and FaceTime unlike AT&T. AT&T even charges for their "Navigator" GPS option.

Meanwhile, here AT&T LTE is 5X5, not much faster than 3G. AT&T sucks...just like their wireline service, overpriced garbage.

I never use FaceTime anyways. I use about 4-5GB a month and have not had my speeds reduced. I routinely get 30-50Mbps on LTE and have seen it as high as 65. I can't say the same for when I tried Sprint. With them I rarely got about 10-15Mbps on LTE and WIMAX.. Generally it was about 1-3. I have a Verizon hotspot that I use for mobile broadband for my other devices which also gets about the same speeds as AT&T. Its a case of "you get what you pay for."

AT&T, last again...consistently worst of the worst. LTE was their only bright spot...ALL other categories including value and customer service they are the turd that consistently sinks to the bottom.

Cool, I'll check it out next time I roll by Big Boy. Hopefully Orange County will see some deployment soon. In the meantime my Sprint 3G isn't much slower than the supposedly awesome AT&T LTE since it is 5X5.

Re: The coming soon network does not disappoint.

They are doing a major refresh of nearly every cellsite, not just adding LTE like ATT/VZW. There is long lead times from equipment vendors.

BTW, I know some people at the HQ and here is what I'm hearing...

Nearly all 38K cells sites will be upgraded to Network Vision and LTE at 1900, only a few hundred won't for some reason. About 80% of 38K will get 800Mhz LTE after iDen is shutoff this summer. The 800Mhz will significantly boost coverage. 2500 LTE will start soon after but is hard to say with all the merger complications.

BRANSON???

Why the hell are they putting LTE in BRANSON before they put it in SPRINGFIELD?

Great idea, let's give service to a city with a population of around 6000, probably just because it's a tourist trap (even though it is slowly dying), before we add it to Missouri's THIRD LARGEST CITY just 40 miles north!

Re: BRANSON???

Probably because Branson has less cell towers, as other posters have pointed out. It looks like sprint is trying to cover most of it's sheer land area first, rather than turning on a few metro areas and moving outwards from there.

Perhaps sprint's customer base is more balanced out between urban and small town/rural customers than other carriers or something.

Re: BRANSON???

Problem is, Branson is hilly. Extremly hilly. They may have more towers overall, but they probably have to have more towers per capita in order to have decent signal strength there.

Springfield is on a massive plateau. From my rooftop I can see probably half a dozen cell towers easily (if not more on a clear day).

This is a nice change from the normal pace of things, where those of us in smaller cities or rural areas get to wait 2-3 years or longer for any technology that the big cities get first.

Doesn't feel so good on the other end, does it

Doubtful. As I said above, with the crazy hilly terrain down there, they'd have to have lots of towers in order to have decent signal in some places.

I'm about to give up on Sprint.

If Sprint doesn't improve their service in two years (when my recently renewed contract expires), I will be jumping ship. I've been pretty loyal to them the last six years, but now that I've starting working in various areas, I've found their coverage very spotty. And that is frustrating working in the field. I have to move my truck down the street to make a reliable call and this is in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, a pretty populated area. It's great they have unlimited data, but what good is that when you can't reliable use it? And I've found myself using my phone's features mostly when I'm at home connected to my WiFi anyway. Cheap sometimes is just that, cheap. I'll rather pay more for reliability.

Glasgow KY !?!?!?!?!?

This will be pretty easy for Sprint.......They only have one tower in Glasgow.....Doesn't even cover the major shopping areas well. All the other carriers in Glasgow have at least three towers.
