Sprint Says EVO 4G Set Sales Records
Crushing previous records set by the Instinct and Pre
by Karl Bode Monday 07-Jun-2010 tags: business · hardware · wireless
Tipped by Romney2012 See Profile
A Sprint press release this morning insists that Sprint broken all single day phone sales records with their launch of the HTC EVO 4G -- eclipsing previous records held by the Samsung Instinct and the Palm Pre. In fact, Sprint says the total number of EVO's sold was three times the number of Insticts and Pres sold during their first three days on the market -- combined. That said, Sprint couldn't be bothered to affix an actual hard number of units sold to the press release...

By the time October comes around there will be a newer and better Android phone available.

Disclaimer: I have no inside knowledge of such a phone. It just seems like a no brainer that a newer and better Android phone would be available by then.

Re: Come on, upgrade eligibility

I'm actually going to try to upgrade in August, because they usually let me upgrade a couple months early.

Anyway, I'm not aware of any phones currently working through FCC approval, so it's probably going to be the Evo.

Just an FYI if you are already a sprint customer you can upgrade 2 months before your contract expires. Unless you are premiere, then it is 1 year.

That's more than first Droid, which sold about 100K its first weekend. VZW did a great job boosting Android awareness and Sprint is benefiting as they hardly did TV ads to the mainstream.

Sprint didn't order enough from HTC obviously. If they ordered 500K, they probably could have nearly sold those first weekend, or first week.

EVO sold 320K according to analysts on DAY 1.
Original iPhone sold 250K in first 2-3 days
Moto Droid sold 100K first 3 days, 250K first week
Droid Incredible sold 100K in first 2 days

EVO possibly outsold iPhone1, Moto Droid and Droid Inc combined on first day.

Sprint needs to put that word out if the EVO estimates are on target.

I'm one of the "new customers" though I have a SERO line with the company (under my parents' names). Sharing a new phone number isn't a huge deal and I didn't want to lose my SERO just yet . Plus the folks at the Sprint store said it'd be a lot easier to just do a new line, so that's what happened.

And there would have been many more if they'd had more stock.

All of the stores I visited only had like 20. I am on several lists, we'll see which one comes up first.

Got one and...

Never looking back. I shopped around comparing the potential for iPhone v4/HD but alas it's at&t that keeps me not wanting an iPhone. Was on Windows Mobile and Android blows it out of the water in terms of workflow and usability. Definitely happy.

Also the reviews about the battery were over exaggerated.

The local sprint stored had people wrapped around it on Friday morning. I couldn't believe it. Ended up snatching excess stock at Radio Shack the day before release. There were no pre-sales left on the first round anywhere near me. Someone at my Radio Shack knew that the phone would be a hit.

Needs Froyo

Sure the EVO's specs are nice. But honestly, the menu scrolling is SO slow for me. WebOS moves like butter. Maybe Froyo will make it faster, but until then, I want my 4G Palm phone and will wait for that.

However, I might get an EVO to have on another line and learn more about Android.

After using WebOS for the past year, I was just scrolling the apps menu and it was really choppy. It wasn't snappy how WebOS is.

Not to mention in order to really customize my Pre, I don't have to root. All I need is Konami code and Preware. Boom.

I don't have a EVO but a Incredible. I've tried the Pre & Pixi and those were much slower then the Moto Droid or HTC Incredible. Not sure it's slow for you either.

Coming from a Pre I understand what you mean. Android has an awkward interface and Pre is much easier to use but EVO simply does much more than Pre. The 'more' on Evo outweighs the downsides.

I do wish Palm would get better hardware though. If they announced a larger screen with faster CPU, I might have considered staying, but only if it had the Android apps as well, which is not likely.

EVO will get Froyo this year. In the meantime, it's still the best Android phone out so far.

Yea, I don't see how you experienced that unless the phone was doing something intensive in the background. My EVO's menus and windows move and pop and fade in and out without any stutter or delay. Even Leap works smoothly.

Similar experience to yours. Installing an app in the background chops up the phone's performance, but that's the only thing that does this.

+1 for sticking with the Pre love here as well. The phone does everything that even the EVO would do for me, but at $40 a month cheaper ($10 a month EVO experience cost, plus the $30 Sprint is charging for tethering). Preware + Mobile Hotspot and I'm done.

Re: Needs Froyo

There is 'free' tethering for EVO too now, and at 4G speeds if you have it. I did a hotspot to my PS3 and was able to stream Netflix HD. Had PC connected still getting 4Mbps while streaming on PS3. Can't do that with Pre.

Pre doesn't have cam with autofocus, so can't do barcode scanning apps. Pre doesn't have mic access so can't do song recognition apps. Pre's small screen was the clincher though... I just can't read it. EVO's large screen is what sold me.

I really like the Pre and it multitasks better than Android, but the EVO pluses far outweigh the minuses. Got try out the EVO at a store.

Hotspot functionality means bubkiss if you're only limited to the 5 (or whatever) 4G markets out there. I was at a convention this weekend and was able to use the 3G to keep me and my friends with an ISP for the weekend. Can't really do that without springing for the $40 a month ($10+30) to tether on the EVO.

I've never been impressed with cell phone cameras (well, barring the experimental cameras-that-happen-to-be-phones), but I'd be willing to give the EVO a spin on that. Usually I always find myself settling on a pocket digi cam for zoom/focus/goodies that I can never get on a mobile platform.

Second, there is mic access on the Pre (there are audio recording apps out there). Just need someone to write the song recognition code and good to go on that regard. Barcode scanning also seems to be a software coding issue, and not a hardware limitiation as well. These things sound nifty, but I don't find myself cinched to needing a mobile point-of-sale reader or audio listener.

I'll go try it out, but as for functionality, all the pluses I've heard about running on the EVO are far outweighed by the hardware cost plus additional monthly fee(s) to simply get the EVO to do what my phone does now.

Re: Needs Froyo

Yeah. Android definitely has the edge on terms of user base popularity and application availability. As I've told other people, webOS is easily the best phone OS out there. However, its popularity never caught momentum (dunno who exactly dropped the ball), and so it's been regulated into a smartphone minority.

Hopefully HP does something with the mobile market and throws more financial muscle behind the webOS platform...but I'm not exactly making plans towards seeing such. If I had to guess my next future phone, it'd be most likely an Android. I could never see myself going into a locked-down platform like the iPhone, so Android (with it's open source base) seems to be my only choice by default.

Also everyone needs to remember WebOS folks. The master behind WebOS interface left and is now with Google to work on the Android interface.

As a fellow Pre user I sympathize with the sentiment, but I doubt we'll see another WebOS phone device, HP doesn't seem interested in producing it. Which is a shame for sure, the WebOS interface is so much better/intuitive than Android's IMHO.

Interesting indeed...

I am waiting for the first class action on this being that Sprint requires you to pay an extra $10 a month for the "advance data services (4G)" even when it is not available in the market you purchased and use the phone.

I see this biting them in the rear.

Trying....to...be.........patient

Got 2 coming for me and the wifey. I told her we couldn't afford the EVOs and that I ordered us the HTC Hero's instead. I think she'll be pleasantly surprised.

Moving from a Palm Centro to the EVO is going to be a pretty big jump for me, so I'm definitely excited.

Not sure what you guys are referring to re: Froyo, but I am sure I will be checking out all the options. Giggidy!

As far as the 4G uplift goes....I definitely hope they see the light here, and at least make it so that only those in that market would need to pay for it. Make it optional, as it is kinda sucky to make me pay for something I CAN'T use, due to THEIR system limitation. The only other perk of it is that it removes the 5GB cap for data, but you really gotta work at breaking 5GB, I think....but who knows, maybe this thing is a data whore.
Hopefully, I will be able to tell you shortly.

Cmon UPS....I need more details than "Out For Delivery"!!!!!!!!!!!

disagree, I think android meets a pretty sizable market that is primarily led by people who value an open platform and want to avoid AT&T like the plague. The EVO will continue to sell like hot cakes.

Honestly looking at iOS (how original btw) and the new hardware I am just not seeing that much to be excited about. Way to go Steve you got multitasking capabilities, Wall papers and Folders. Why did it take you 3 years to figure this out? Android has been on the market for a year or 2 and the iphone already looks dated. Voice to text, "Live" wall papers, better integration with social networks. More free value added services through Google. The list goes on where the iPhone just failed to deliver this year. The only thing I can think of that would be a positive is the battery life and a refresh body.

I'll be sticking with my EVO and I know of several people that, despite the new iPhone coming out and being on AT&T already are still getting an EVO.

I don't think many people feel that way. I know more people going from ATT to sprint than the other way around.

Been Eligible for Upgrade Since December

I just haven't worked up the initiative to bump up my Touch Pro. If I chose today, I'd do the Touch Pro 2.

I ran Android on my TP for a while, but I found it wasn't as featured or configurable as the cooked WinMo ROMs.

With MS Apple-ing itself into Phone 7; I'll likely get into Android eventually. I'm hoping by the time I do, it'll be better supported in the development community.

Besides, there isn't anywhere else to go, with that great big DEAD END looming after WinMo 6.5.

LIES LIES lies lies... mistake?

quote:
US operator Sprint has admitted inaccurately claiming that its HTC EVO 4G handset had outsold the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct combined, by three times in a third of the time.

The operator claimed to have shifted three times as many EVOs in the first day as the combination of Pre and Instinct managed in their first three days after launch - impressive figures, but not actually true.

"We inadvertently erred in the comparison," the company coughed in a statement, instantly dropping analysts' expectations from 300,000 units to a rather-less-impressive 150,000 despite first day sales still being twice what the Pre managed and six times the Instinct's showing.

But even 150,000 sales isn't a disaster, and those are all customers who'll stick with Sprint if they want to maintain the speed that WiMAX promises.

Well if the number was 150k in the first weekend then that's pretty comparable to the iPhone then, assuming that's the real accurate number.

I couldn't find one anywhere in South Florida to the stores I visited, but....I remembered the Citrix partnership we have and I know the Sprint account mgr for Citrix so my phone is on order should be here this week yet.

Really looking forward to the EVO.
