Cox, TWC, and Comcast to offer mobile phone service
(old news - 01:30PM Tuesday Nov 01 2005)
tags: business · wireless · cable
As expected, Sprint has struck a deal with Cox, Comcast and Time Warner Cable, in which the three cable giants will re-sell Sprint mobile phone service in bundles. Just yesterday, Sprint announced the Sprint Music Store, which sells tunes to users of the company's freshly launched high-speed EVDO network. As we've discussed, Sprint's deal with the cable operators could have added significance if the rumored deal with the Department of Defense pans out.

This is cellular service, how are cellular phone's going to start a broadband war? And since the online store is a "music store", not a "download everything including quake4 store", so I fail to see how this will start the broadband war.

Never had a problem with thier customer service TBH. But what company hasn't both side of the fences said about them. And my celluar, while I dont like this 2 year contract thing, never had any major problems with it either.

So What!

Quadruple Play?

We'll see. Unless this "deal" lowers my currnet prices on my PCS and cable/HSI bill, it's all bull$*!t, IMO.

4 for more..

this is insanity.. why do all these Mega-corps think that by bundling everything together, we, the consumer, will even want it? personally I prefer seperate companies, of my choice, providing me my needed services...

also I wonder how this will affect corp/business Nextel users (we're suppose to be migrated to the Sprint network in a few years)

Yeah!! Why the hell would they want to give you the option of bundling your cell phone with your other bills!! They're freaking idiots I know!! Quick, send them an email telling them you don't want to have that option available to you!! Insanity I tell you!!

Its been proven time and time again that if the normal average consumer can save 10, 20 or 30 bucks a month by bundling, most will do it. Of course, like you said, you prefer seperate companies. Thats the beauty of it- you have a choice. You no wanty bundle? You no have to have. For those that enjoy saving money if a bundle is good for them, more power to them.

On the flip side, companies love the bundle because customers are more likely to be loyal and not 'churn' to the next great promotion by a rival.

Credit Checks

So does this mean cable cos will now be doing credit checks on all new customers to see if they qualify fro the quadruple play or only if you buy cellular service from them? In addition can you buy only cellular service from them instead of in a bundle? This will be very interesting when the details of how they will offer it comes out.

actually Cable already does a credit check well at least Time Warner does in Ohio especially WOH and NWOH.

But since Sprint and Nextel are now together they're credit scores have been reduced. They are approving just about anyone. I applied for a Nextel phone back in July and they required $250. Now I ran it about a month ago and it went to $150 plus my 18% discount I get from having a corporate deal with them thru a company I sell products for.

Point is though; credit checks are ran for everything, gas, electric, telephone, cable, etc.

I beg to differ. This still seems to vary from company to company. I have never had a credit check run for natural gas, electricity, cable TV or landline phone service.

Re: Credit Checks

call SBC and ask them if they run a credit check, and call major utility companies.

Credit Checks are there. Thats how they get their "deposit" if you do not meet their requirements.

Re: Credit Checks

How about you call them? SBC didn't run one when I applied for landline service or DSL. No deposit, and my credit sucks. Same goes for the other services I mentioned. In Illinois, ComEd runs a credit check for electrical service, but I don't have service from them.

Again, I say this seems to vary from company to company. I'm not disputing that some companies run them; I'm simply stating that it varies, and not everyone does.

Re: Credit Checks

SBC runs them. I applied for service from them and I had to pay $100 for local service and couldnt have LD for about 6 months, DSL was required to be billed to a credit card if i wanted it. Instead of paying it I had my dad call and get service for me.

AEP/American Electric Company- Credit Check, Time Warner Cable- Credit Check, Columbia Gas Companies- Credit Check.

and chances are Comcast and everyone else does too and just doesnt say anything.

And for SBC that little hold time when you wait before they start to take your order after your personal information is obtained---thats when they're checking your credit and to see if you are who you say you are---checking to see if you SSN matches your name.

Re: Credit Checks

Then explain to me why there are no inquiries from these companies on my credit report. Whenever someone pulls my credit, the company name and date appear in the Inquiries section. Not only is it an automated process, it's the law.

Re: Credit Checks

Ever think they use a 3rd party company to do it? They also can request a copy of your credit score without putting it on your credit report. They just pay more for it.

I'll concede that that's possible, but I still have never seen any inquiries on my report that I couldn't point at and say "Oh, that was when I applied for such-and-such credit card or such-and-such loan."

Got a source to back that up? The Fair Credit Reporting Act and my credit report both say you're wrong.

Re: Credit Checks

didn't say they were doing it. I said they could.

Not all companies comply with the fair debit reporting act and they can use any basically any source to gain information about you if its public information or pay to get it.

Its called common sense. Stay out of the radar get what you want. Pay another company to do it for you, get what you want. And you're credit report wouldnt show if they want your score. The credit report says who wanted the report. Score and Report are seperate. You can pay for one or the other or both.

And now you're talking about something that's completely different.

I know they're separate, but they're both going to show up as an inquiry on my report. You've also failed to answer my question as to what your source is - simply citing "common sense" doesn't apply here.

This thread has jumped the shark, and it's clear you're just talking out of your ass. I'm done. Have a nice day.

Hmmm...

"For itself, Sprint has repeatedly commented it is eager to introduce dual-mode telephone technology which combines cellular phone service with Wi-Fi data capabilities. Phones using both technologies could utilize traditional cellular communications while users are mobile, but route voice and other phone services through a subscriber's broadband Internet connection at home, or through a Wi-Fi connection available on a subscriber's notebook computer, other digital device, or compatible service. The result would be a digital phone while the subscriber has Wi-Fi Internet access, and a traditional cellular phone when the user is away from Wi-Fi services."

This may be it! With this, I may just finally get a cel... and it will say Comcast on it!

Sprint and MSOs = strange bedfellows

although with Sprint spinning off its local wireline business, I guess it isn't so strange after all.

Where the heck is T-Mobile in all these deals lately? I simply don't understand why they, the only major US carrier with no domestic wireline connections, continue to shun MVNO deals, co-branding, etc. like they do.

A bit of deja vu for Cox and Sprint in San Diego.

FOR RELEASE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1996

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (Editor's note: This release was issued by Sprint) -- Sprint PCS ushered in a new era of wireless communication today, announcing the launch of its PCS, or Personal Communication Services, for consumers and businesses in San Diego -- one of the first cities in the country to launch the Sprint PCS service.

"Cox Communications was one of only three companies -- and the only cable company -- to be awarded a "Pioneer's preference" license from the FCC by demonstrating its innovative approach integrating cable infrastructure with PCS networks."

I remember when t-mobile used to give unlimited anytime minutes for $49.99. now its only 1000 minutes for the $49.99 package. Cellphones are the one area where you have lots of competition yet really no DECENT plans.

because they were trying to gain a foothold then with better options. is not going to happen now.

sprint is so far the best provider i have used and i have worked with every provider in the new england area. They just seem to work in all the areas others don't.

i think until we get some newer low cost solutions for equipment that they hang on the tower we won't see lower costs. Hopefully soon lucent brings out some cheaper gear soon. ericson equipment is just to expensive.

I call for a rule 21 session for a reason why the major telco and cablecos haven't given us 100+megabit broadband.
There have been too many delays and I'm not gonna take it anymore!!!!!
BTW, as of January 2006, I won't be a sprint customer anymore... asta la vista baby
Yes, a very profitable customer who doesnt use most of their minutes each month, ie you get free money, but too bad.. its all over now!
